Windows Messenger

This has probably been posted before but I reformatted and forgot how to do it.... I have xp pro and it has that crappy ass Windows Messenger thing where it runs pop ups on your computer advertising crap and about Joe from 12.435.94.3 says go here! Anyways, how do you get rid of it?

Open up your control panel, go to administrative tools go to the services icon. Disable the 'Messenger' service.
The 'Messenger' service has nothing to do with the 'Windows Messenger' instant messenging application.

'Windows Messenger' (the instant messaging application) is not the problem. The procedure Bubba just posted will do fuckall to stop you from receiving those messages.
It is the messenger service. This service is used for the NET SEND command. If you aren't behind a firewall that blocks the port that this service makes use of, you can receive those messages. Either:
A) place yourself behind a firewall that's properly configured
or
B) disabled the 'Messenger' Service in the Services panel of whichever version of windows you're using.

easy way to keep those "messenger" popups from happening:
(as Aranuil suggests--disable the messenger))
1. Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
2. Go to Administrative Tools.
3. Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
4. Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
5. Change the startup type to Disable and click Apply at the bottom.
6. Click OK to exit window.
