A Respected member of the community has assured me that this is a valid question and that it poses, "Quite the conundrum" (to use his wording) for the moviegoing populace.
Discuss.

They do make pubic-hair 'wigs' (called merkins), though I'm not sure if Ms. Graham was actually using one in Boogie Nights. I'm betting it was her real hair, albeit grown out to achieve that '70s look.
As an interesting aside, I've noticed that a good many female celebrities have extremely bushy pubes. Back when I was working at "Entertainment Tonight," we used to rummage through British tabloids for story ideas (shows you how credible ET is right there). Brit tabloids have no qualms with publishing paparazzi photos of celebs on vacation -- a good many of them nude. Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman and many others sport that '70s look. Somewhat disgusting, if you ask me.

I am not a fan of the furryness....I prefer my snizz shaved with just a small patch for proof that the girl is indeed capable of it sprouting. Heather Graham does not seem to be the type of girl who can grow a bush like that though....I am saying weave.

I'm starting to agree with you on the weave thing. Her bush in that movie is out of control, and much fuller than many natural blondes are capable of growing. Also, I wouldn't put it past the director to have made her a hairpiece -- considering the wonders his prosthetics did for Marky Mark's member.

Let's not split hairs here (tee hee). I never said I found "a little" pubic hair disgusting. I said I found full-on, ungroomed '70s bush disgusting. There is quite a difference between the two, yes?

Nah, I think he meant that bushy, long and out-of-control pubic hair is somewhat disgusting. I can't say I'm a big fan of excessive body hair, myself.

But why is it disgusting? Sounds like some bizarre conditioning, finding the natural state of the area "disgusting." Finding one more aesthetically pleasing than the other is one thing, but being disgusted by it is shallow.

I wouldn't go so far as to claim that being disgusted by it is "shallow," but I understand where you're coming from. I just happen to prefer a little grooming in the area. So I guess you could say it's an aesthetic preference, not actual "disgust" over one alternative. Poor choice of words on my part, but you get the idea.
By the same token, I think men should be held to the same standard of pubic haircare. Many women would prefer that their men not sport the Grizzly Adams pube look, and men should comply in such cases.
Of course, people are free to like whatever they like, and pubes are no exception. If one person prefers natural, and the other prefers shaved, there's no reason why the two can't get along.

It's been my experience that women who are attentive to their grooming there, are more comfortable with themselves and more aware of their own sexuality.

Gonna have to agree with Millie and Kyoucan here..oddly enough.
Big bush is gross.
Do I find the natural state disgusting? Yes.
Why would that seem odd to you that I find the natural state disgusting?
The natural state of humans:
Showers? no.
Deoderant? no.
Shaved faces, legs, and arm pits? no.
Toliet paper? no.
Mouthwash/toothpaste? no.
Haircut? no.
Clothing? No. Or maybe skins of dead animals.
I prefer good hygene over the natural state.
Do I want a woman shaved? Not really....I like it but it's not necessary.
I just want her to have the yard under control. Trim the grass, prune the hedges, whatever...don't necessarily have to remove the grass to have a nice looking yard. But you should mow it and edge it once in awhile.
In the 70's most yards had rusty swing sets in them....nasty. Could get tetnis.

Shaving pubic hair is not a matter of hygeine so bad argument Pils.
And Aranuil, your assumption is wrong too. I let mine grow out sometimes and I am very comfortable with myself and sex. Scientific theory would have you look at a more important variable in your observation: the type of women you get involved with.
Something you guys did not differentiate, that at least Millie did, is the difference between "disgust" and aesthetic preference. When you let a purely aesthetic preference go to an extreme, where anything other than that preference is repulsive, yes, you are shallow. Aesthetically, I prefer many things, but I don't let them take over my rational sensibilities. I can at least say I'm not so innocuous that I let the presence of pubic hair turn me into a sqealing little girl.

If you meet someone that you like everything about except for their pubes, I'd suggest you buy a razor a get to work on him or her. If you like a certain look, do it yourself.
I like at least trimmed or semi groomed at minimum but I'll do it for them if I have to and not bitch about it like many people bitch about everything on this board : )
If a hairy pubic area stands between you and great sex then you've got issues : )
Get to work!

Shaving of any sort has a lot to do with culture and trend rather than hygene. Hair actually helps to keep the skin clean. Finding hair disgusting is pretty shallow in my book. If someone were to say I find bald men disgusting I would consider them pretty shallow, and this is no different. Of course, I'm a hairy bastard, but I keep my face and head shaved and I trim the rest, mostly for the look. It's all about how you want to present yourself, I guess. But I don't discriminate when it comes to pussy.

Hair helps hold in scent and flavor, both of which happen to be 2 of my most favorite things about pussy. Also, seeing damp pussy hair is a beautiful sight. It's like that first morning sunlight hitting the dew on freshly cut grass. There's just something so right about it and makes me smile despite myself. Also, pubic hair makes a particular noise as you eat the pussy. Maybe it's a personal thing, but that sound adds to my enjoyment a great deal. It's all the minor details that add up to make the experiance so immersive IMO.
Having said all that, I enjoy a shaved snatch for other reasons entirely. The key is to mix it up and never have the same thing all the time. I guess I always tend to lean more towards whatever is not the norm. Shaved used to be really taboo and rare, now everyone does it and it has lost OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of it's former mystique. Right now, seeing a woman with pubic hair is more rare, hence more attractive to me right now.

Zamtuk, in response to your "who the hell do you know like that" comment...
I know a few...unfortunately.
But that is the natural state of a human...if you think caveman used deoderant, shaved, showered and used toilet paper...your kidding yourself. You want to see the natural state of a human? Look at monkeys.
There is nothing "natural" about toliet paper, toothpaste, deoderant.....so for someone to use the argument about a hairy bush is natural loses a lot of weight considering that nothing else we do is natural.
Also it is a hygene issue. I mean ask yourself "what is hygene to most americans?" I mean why do we brush our teeth? Is it mainly to prevent cavities? Or do OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of us do it to make our teeth look clean and our breath winter fresh? So true there is very small health risks associated with hairy bushes...like cavities to teeth.
Maybe more risk of yeast infection?
Do shaved women get crabs?
How often do shaved women leave pubes on the toilet seat?
When women pee or have thier mentrual cycle, what's easier to clean? Hairy or neat and tidy?
But there are the appearance and smell issues same as the reasons you brush your teeth.
Also maybe disgusting is a bad word for a large bush, unappealing would be a better word....
And if I met a girl who had it all going on except she had a huge hairy jungle below...yes I would either over look it or see if she wanted to trim it some for fun or whatever. Usually you like a girl already if your seeing her bush....so to throw that away over something minor is not wise....
But then again there are other shallow reasons we pass up girls all the time...like if they are fat, covered with acne, dumb as a rock, mean, buck teeth whatever...doesn't take much for a person to drop a few steps down the list. Bush is just something you can't see at first....where as some of the other factors are right out there before you even say "Hi."
So to each his own I guess...sure maybe some of us would pass on a hairy muff, but others like fairweather love it. Hell there are even web sites devoted to hairy women. Just like there are web sites devoted to plus size women or hermaphrodites.
I mean if you had me list off my top 10 things to look for in a woman I don't think a well trimed bush would be in it....but I definately have a preferance.

Pilsbury....
That is so wrong. I met this Chick in the bar one night she was SOO hot. I mean I was getting a wood just looking at her. I charmed her into my truck, and its off to the house. After a few seconds of idle chitchat were peeling the skins and headed to the playroom. I'm kissing her all over and I move south to the land of many pleasures, I gets within sniffing distance and OMG. I have been on the back deck of a tuna boat that smelled better than that shit. Needless to say I was not in the mood to inspect further. ( I played dead )
The moral of this is A) Just because you like a chick doesnt mean you can overlook the smell. b) Always run a finger down the crack for a test dip, before you leave the meathouse with your supposed trophy.
Oh yeah there was another chapter to this story... A couple months later I was dating this other chick. We had been going out for around a month (and yes she smelled good ). We are over at her place relaxing after work and Guess who shows up. You guessed it turns out "Tuna boat" is my girlfriends best friend. Well since I left Tuna in my bed and snuck off to work that morning, I had avoided seeing her. The 2 of em start talking and one thing led to another. Next thing I know They are asking me why I didnt have sex with the Tuna boat. I say.. I dont wanna discuss it.. and try to avoid the subject, lied and said I passed out, but NOOOO they wouldnt let it lie. Finally after the chick I was going out with suggested I give it another try, I came out with the reason.
Note to self..... NEVER ever tell a chick you didnt bump uglies because you couldnt get passed the smell. Especially if she is sitting in the same room with her best friend =(

You should have said...
"How about you eat her out and I watch from over here"
Not only could you enjoy the show, but you wouldn't have to explain he stink because she would learn first hand.
Also I agree smell is something I can't get over easily. But a little extra bush or a misplaced mole or soemthing, you can over look stuff like that, sometimes things can even become charming after a while. I knew this real cute girl with a small gap in her teeth...perhaps her only flaw, after a while that gap was kinda cute.
But a stinky pussy..thats never cute...not even after a case of beer.

"Maybe more risk of yeast infection?

1) No more risk of yeast infections. You need to read up on yeast infections if you even think the corelation is possible. In fact, without hair at all, the vaginal area is more susceptible to chemicals which can irritate the area, which in turn could lead to infection.
2)Yes, shaved women can get crabs too
3) If someone is leaving pubes on the toilet seat, you need to worry more about how considerate they are for not preventing it or at least brushing it off.
4) I've been everything from completely shaved to going without shaving for months and I'll say that there is no difference with cleaning. Most of the bush (least for me) is above the urethra so its not like I get a soppy bush or anything.
What it comes down to is aethetic preference, but I would never be a slave to someone else's preference. If a guy told me he thought it was disgusting I'd drop him so fast. Squeamishness about certain things is the BIGGEST turnoff. Fortunately the kind of guys I've been involved with aren't shallow enough for it to be a big deal whichever way I decide to trim it.

Unfortunatley Pilsbury, over the course of my years as a sex machine, lol. I discovered a basic trend. Most chicks with a unkempt hedge usually have an odor. So in order to avoid The smelly finger, if I ran into large qaunities of hair at the third button I usually stopped there.
Unless of course there was even the slightest chance I coulda been wrong.
