My 21st birthday is in two days

And I was wondering what delicious beers / mixers / cocktails / wines you guys would recommend I purchase. Obviously my alcohol horizon has some great potential to expand and I want to fill it as completely as possible.
My current favorites, if it helps:
Beer - Amber Bock, Oberon, Blue Moon, Red Stripe. I dislike bitters and enjoy full taste. I won't like anything with a retarded amount of hops. The pilsnery aftertaste of Budweiser is delightful.
Wine - clueless
Liquor - I'm a fan of drinks involving coke. Jack and coke, Rum and coke, Crown and coke. I hate gin, vodka is nasty. I usually enjoy rum and whiskeys. Jager hasn't been good since high school.
I'm a bartender back home and dislike most of the drinks I'm told to make. Thanks for your suggestions. I'm open to any of them!

Expand your alcohol horizons slowly. It's amazing how your tastes change. When I turned 21 I was drinking Natural Light, and doing shots of SoCo with Blueberry Schnaps. I'm still a beer drinker, but I like anything BUT macrobrew beers. It doesn't hurt that I'm in the microbrew capital of the US. It took a while before I started drinking reds, now I don't drink anything but reds. I prefer Malbec wines these days.
I'm a beer drinker through-and-through and there is nothing I like more than a nice Belgian beer served in a goblet. Delirium is widely available. It's sold in a big white bottle with pink elephants on it. Chimay also makes good Belgian style beers. If you can get it, New Belgium makes a few as well; Abbey and Trippel.
Happy B-Day!

I highly recommend you drink yourself stupid for about a month. You go to college, so that shouldn't be a problem. Over time you'll stop drinking to get drunk and just drink 'cause you enjoy the taste.

I had a horrible hang over.

It is 18 in Texas:
Sec. 106.09. EMPLOYMENT OF MINORS. (a) Except as provided in Subsections (b), (c), and (e) of this section, no person may employ a person under 18 years of age to sell, prepare, serve, or otherwise handle liquor, or to assist in doing so.
(b) A holder of a wine only package store permit may employ a person 16 years old or older to work in any capacity.
(c) A holder of a permit or license providing for the on-premises consumption of alcoholic beverages may employ a person under 18 years of age to work in any capacity other than the actual selling, preparing, or serving of alcoholic beverages.
(d) The fact that a person is 18, 19, or 20 years of age is not a ground for refusal of an original or renewal permit or license issued under Chapter 35 or 73 of this code, provided that such person to whom a permit or license is issued may carry out the activities authorized by those chapters only while in the actual course and scope of the person's employment.
(d) The holder of a permit or license providing for the on-premises consumption of alcoholic beverages who also holds a food and beverage certificate may employ a person under 18 years of age to work as a cashier for transactions involving the sale of alcoholic beverages if the alcoholic beverages are served by a person 18 years of age or older.

The hotel where I work. You only need to be 18 in Michigan. I was serving drinks for guests at age 15 though. Banquet places don't really care about the law.

(quality) vodka is the best if you're going to drink the hard stuff.
Stay away from those plastic bottles of liquor!
You don't need to know anything about wine, just make sure it's made from Riesling grapes from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer area. (that would be white wine, preferrably auslese quality, but spätlese is ok)...zomg, I typed an umlaut! "Ö"

Gin is an aquired taste, but I live by it. Tanquaray, try it, I'm sure you will like it! that bombay saphire is crap, beefeater is harsh, but the ole tanq n tonic is a great hangoverless drink (for me)
and for beers, drink Gueniss.
Wine is for girls.

I stand corrected. We brew the most beer per capita, but most of that is schwill (Coors/Molson and AnBusch). We do have the GABF though, and New Belgium Brewery.

As for wine, that is far too subjective and varied. You would be well-served to not have any wine if you are drinking a shitload of beer and hard alcohol--trust me.
Revisit the wine topic if you are going to cook some foods for a lady, then ask.

Stick to the old saying:
beer on wine is fine
wine on beer is queer
I confirmed this by blowing chunks in the back of a cab while doing the latter after running out of beer. The cab driver was not amused. I was only 16 at the time though (Switzerland) so I forgive myself. My room mate gave the cab driver 100 francs out of my wallet and we were on our way (by foot!).

You only have to be 18 to serve in MN as well.
Don't do a cement mixer shot, whatever you do. If you are not familiar with what it is, you take a shot of bailey's, hold it in your mouth, then take a half shot of lime juice and swish it around in your mouth - after a couple of seconds it curdles.. it is so..fucking..nasty.
I like crown quite a bit too, but I mix it with 7UP. How can't you like vodka, I don't understand! Generally on the weekends I will pick up a bottle of flavored vodka (smirnoff is actually good for cheap vodka, I don't get a hangover like I do from other cheap vodkas, but 3 olives vodka is good for flavored kinds, or absolut, stoli..) And mix it with 7UP.
Actually a very good combo I found recently was Smirnoff Black Cherry vodka mixed with Pomegranate 7UP.. It fucking rules! It's a bit sweet probably for some people, I think it tastes just like a maraschino cherry, which I

.
My 21st was a bit rough. Went to a local bar with friends, they gave me all the worst shots you can imagine, and I left having taken 19 shots or so in 55 minutes.. Then decided when I got back to my friends house to smoke some weed, and have a few beers.. I ended up sitting on the toilet shitting and puking into the garbage can simultaneously... That was the last time I went overboard like that though.

Ouch!
Here is a good birthday drink (or anytime, really)
Irish Car Bomb
Take a shot glass, add mostly Jameson Irish Whiskey, then top with Bailey's.
Fill a pint glass 3/4 full of Guinness. Drop the shot glass into the pint and chug before Bailey's curdles.
Most excellent!

Yeah that^ Try and talk whoever you're with into purchasing you a car bomb. *edit* Canelek beat me to that.
As far as liquor goes, I'm a huge gin and tonic fan, but I order it double lime. You seem to prefer dark liquors though which will quickly fade after you get down with wild turkey 101 too many nights.

ugh, that's kinda like mine. We started drinkin early, especially me because I had my last final that day. Then we went to a bar/club and I blacked out after about 45min of being at this bar/club. woke up in a hospital with doctors around me laughing at me with my shirt off. As it turns out they dragged me back to their apartment and drew all over me (penis goin in the mouth, nazi signs, entire left leg black right one green with alternating toe nails and much much more) then one of them splashed me with water from the hose of the sink to try and wake me. then they just said let him sleep. Well I was in front of the AC and they said they took me when I was just throwin up and shaking. turns out I had minor alcohol poisoning and was close to hypothermia. But up until what I couldn't remember it was one of the best nights.

Not too long after you turn 21 you'll discover it's not that big a deal and drinking is not (generally) an activity in itself, but something that accompanies other activities.
My daughter turned 21 over the holidays and was disappointed that the world didn't change overnight like she'd expected it too
Happy birthday.

Haha, that does sound good, I'll have to try it. Yeah if the drink I am drinking is red/pink and has fruit in it I know I look like a complete homo, which is why I restrain myself from drinking such drinks when out at bars

Probably not, one of my best friends parents own the "Gay 90's" in Minneapolis, which is the most popular gay bar in MN, and is known nationwide (many of the drag queens there have won awards at the national contests). When my girlfriend and I (and whatever other friends come with) do go out to a bar, it's generally there. My friend is the main bartender, and we can drink all night and never pay more than like 20-30 dollars (and thats drinking top shelf vodka/red bulls, shots, etc), we have VIP cards so we don't have to wait in line or pay to get in, and they play our kind of music.
To be honest there are a TON of straight people that go there, mainly girls. I have come to believe that they go there to have fun and think that they are safe from being hit on relentlessly like they would be at other bars, but the thing is that guys have caught onto that and they go there too.. So I would say that really only 50-60% of the people there on a given night are actually gay/bi/trans/whatever. I have been hit on by guys there many times, but as long as you are comfortable with yourself and politely tell them you are straight they respectfully leave you alone.
We generally hang out by the main bar where my friend bartends, and from what I see - the two most popular drink are vodka/red bull and hennessey.

My personal opinion(s), but...
Don't ruin Crown by mixing it with coke. Coke completely covers all the parts about Crown that make it good. It's fantastic on the rocks, but if you want/need to mix it, mix it with Ginger Ale. They complement each other fabulously, and you can still enjoy the niceties of Crown. 7up works in a pinch, but isn't as good.
Save Coke for Jack or Morgan or even cheaper stuff. Honestly, if you're mixing with coke, you can use the cheapest shit out there, you won't notice a difference.
Most of my personal preferences for liquor sound like they're the exact opposite of you, so I'll just leave it at that.
I don't think you should ever drink wine to get drunk. I know plenty of people who do, and they're happy doing so (and I still

them). But I keep wine with meals, and enjoy it immensely there.
As for Beers, find yourself a beer store with a good selection (domestic/import/both) and just pick up a couple six packs a week (month, whatever your pace) of something different each time. Find stuff you like and keep it stocked when you do. There's just way too many beers on such a broad spectrum of tastes to try and accurately recommend.

I really wanted to quote almost everyone's post and offer my opinion, but that is too much.
First off, gin is amazing. It's hard to beat a great gin and tonic with a few limes, though cadalano's concoctions sounds pretty good. And don't listen to Noysy, Bombay Sapphire is the best. Tanquray is pretty good, but standard.
A good whiskey (all types) is great on the rocks. Coke is for pussies, 7UP too. I prefer Maker's Mark or a good scotch like The Glenlivet
On the shots note, whoever said you drink whatever is put in front of you is 100 percent correct. There are only two kinds of shots you ever take, those you choose, and those that are bought for you. Unless some jackass decides to do something unecessary and order a foolish shot (even though you still have to take it if it's your 21st).
Funkmasterr, a cement mixer is a joke shot. I'm sure all your friends had a great laugh at your expense on that one.
Xyun, a prairiefire is a pretty fucking manly shot, kudos to you.

Yeah I know, the sad thing is after taking that one on my birthday I was out with some friends one night and three of us decided to take one (we were already drunk when we decided to do that).... I don't think I'll ever know why I decided to do that again.

Agree on all counts, sir! I had a Sapphire Martini last evening

It seems that there's a pretty large disparity between good and bad gin (and vodka). I sometimes wonder if people swear these two off because they have the horrible shit on their first tries.

Personally, I agree with you 100%. I drink my whiskeys either Neat or on the rocks, but it didn't sound like Leo would go for that being a Coke guy so I didn't include that in the recommendations.

Personally, I think Bok should try Woodford Reserve. It blows Makers out of the water.
PS: Evan Williams and Jim Beam on "well" are the sign of a good bar.

Eh, I have had Woodford a great amount of times actually, and it is fantastic. It is a lot smoother than Maker's, but I find the taste to be a little less enjoyable.
On a side note, if you can find it, Barenjager (sp?) is a fine liqour to take a shot of.
