Adding Subtitles to movies

Ok, this is kind of a newb question, but I've got a roomate that doesn't speak English very well, and I'd like to add some subtitles to my DVD collection so we can watch movies.

So far, I've had to download files as .avi's or .wmv's or whatever, then convert them to DVD format to be able to add the subtitles in, but it's a real pain to find every movie I own in good quality avi format.

Does anyone know of a good program I can use to convert my DVDs to AVIs or WMVs or whatnot?

I think handbrake will hard code subtitles into an avi.

Handbrake seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks Neost.
