You know what really grinds my gears?

So we're considering getting a Nissan Rogue...

Before taxes, the model with the options we want is right around 29k CDN...
If I go across the border into Buffalo, the exact same fucking car is 23k US... or like 21.5k CDN.

The biggest potential problem is that Nissan could be complete pricks about warranty service. Some dealerships won't even do warranty service on Nissans purchased in the US.

I just don't fucking understand it.
It's not like these things were all purchased by the dealerships when the cdn dollar was low and they are stuck with a lot of backstock. Hell the delivery time on them is upwards to 2 months. Both the US version and CDN version are made in Japan. It's not like the manufacturing cost is 30% higher for vehicles being shipped to Canada.

Even vehicles made in Canada get sold at dealers in the US!

Well, if you think about it, you'd have 7.5K CND that you saved by helping out the United Stares economy to pay for repairs if something did go wrong. That's not a bad risk. Something small might go wrong but it'd take a lot to end up paying 7.5K.

Par pricing on Honda's is about 3 months away, until then there is an unadvertised 5-9k rebate to Canadian dealers to make the cars closer if they need to go there and to pad their pockets if they don't.

Chrysler is already at par pricing, Toyo and Nissan are on the same page as Honda currently

They are already offering $1500 (Fit/Civic) - $5500 (Pilot) rebates.

Not really at par. Prices are still 15-20% higher than the US.

The same car in Europe starts at £13499... or under $27k CDN.

The Euro model (Qashqai) is vastly different from it's North American counterpart.
The US and Canadaian models are virtually identical outside of their emission control systems.

According to the Nissan web page, it starts at $28900 AUD.. roughly 25k CAD.

I know you can't really compare models from different countries eventhough they are pretty much the same car. But the pricing seems to be pretty consistent worldwide, except for the US.

I'm sure the price diference is federal tariffs. Buy it in Canada and help pay for your health care!

Unless the tax you refered to is the tariffs, but as far as I know the importer pays that then tacks it onto the pricetag.

The link doesn't work, but I'm assuming you're quoting the "Visia VAN". That's the Van version which only has two seats and is intended for businesses (construction, trades etc.). There's no backseat in it, just storage, and it's taxed in a lower bracket.

The cheapest full model Qashqai for sale in Denmark costs 273,000 Danish kroner = €36,623 = $55,122.

So actually what I'm saying is...argh, I can understand where you're coming from. Looking at car prices right next door (Sweden and Germany) makes any would-be car owner in Denmark a closet republican.

A few examples:

Code: Select all

Car price Sweden price Germany price Denmark price US
Mercedes C350 $72,302 $68,283 $186,851 $37,725
Nissan Qashqai $27,604 $29,664 $55,122 $24,750 (Nissan Quest)
Volvo V70 2.0 (2008) $41,147 $49,937 $95,828 $33,210
Toyota Yaris 1.0 VVT-i $20,662 $19,716 $31,016 $12,010

edit: figured I should include the US prices just for laughs

Man, why so much hate for the Mercedes? Are German autos taxed to hell there?

Boogahz wrote:Man, why so much hate for the Mercedes? Are German autos taxed to hell there?
yup...fucking nazis! THEY MUST PAY!

It works like this

Code: Select all

Listprice before any taxation 288,276 DKK
VAT (25%) 72,069 DKK
Listprice incl. VAT 360,345 DKK
Standard deductible -14,370 DKK 1)
Standard price 345,975 DKK

Registration fee of 180% of VAT included price 622,755 DKK
Standard deductible -57,300 DKK 2)
Deductible -400 DKK 3)
Final price 925,400 DKK

1) Varies, dependant on the engine type/size and emissions standards.
2) Deductible for portion of list price under DKK 76400 (lower percentage)
3) Varies, for particlefilter and safety equipment.
1 buck american is roughly 5 danish kroner (4.97).

So cars with a cheap list price are taxed a lot less, both because of the ridiculous reg. fee and because of the deductible which only really has an impact on lower priced cars. There's a reason why Audi, Mercedes and BMW list the complete figures in their sales material - trying to underline the fact that while they're exclusive cars, it's the tax system that jacks the prices up *that* high.

in more detail for a cheaper car (and yes, in Denmark a $40,000 car *is* a cheap car...):

Code: Select all

List price 86,051
VAT (25%) 21,513
List price w/VAT (1) 107,564

Deductibles:
Radio -1,000
Airbags no. 3 to 6 -5,120
ABS brakes -3,750
ESP -2,500
Max. NCAP-stars -2,000
Taxed value (2) 93,194

Registrationfee
Fee of value (2) under 76400 DKK of 105% 80,220
Fee of value (2) exceeding 76400 DKK of 180% 34,549

Registration fee deductibles
Low fuel consumption (as an example) -4,000
Seatbelt alarms -600
Total Registration fee (3) 105,848

Street price (1) + (3) 213,412

What are used car prices like?

I know in Norway cars used to be, and still are I think, taxed/tariffed on:
engine size
engine power
weight of the car
original price

(I don't think they tax in on fuel consumption/emissions, yet).

I calculated how much it would cost me to take my 2001 Trans Am WS6 in, and it was not funny price! THink I got to about 100K US just for the engine ;)

Yeah, it is - and bicycles for short distance commuters.

A 2005 Toyota Yaris with roughly 30k miles on it will run you around 22,000-23,000 dollars. A 2001 VW Golf 1.4 with 89k miles on it is roughly $28,000.
