Ok, I guess it's better to just ignore anything about Britney Spears but... Apparently she didn't do too well on the recent Video Music Awards where she had trouble lip-synching to a song with the main lyrics of "gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme". Or so I read! Not that it's any big surprise as her talent tank has always been on 'E'. Anyway.. Yeah, we watched it last night before my friends and I went out. It was certainly good for a laugh, but it was horrified laughter. Whoever that is needs help. Or, he's the best comedian ever.

I actually found that kind of trash in PA, believe it or not. I'm not sure exactly where in PA, but I was driving to NYC and we pulled off the tollway (was either 80 or 90, can't remember) and went to this gas station like 1/2 mile off the road. We got out, and the guy that pumped our gas was scrawny as hell and missing most of his teeth, and the dude inside was working the "register" (it was a calculator) and had a shotgun sitting right behind him, all of the food & drink was expired, my friend is black, and needless to say we got the fuck out of there pronto.

I've lived in the deep south for 20+ years and encounter more ignorance and blatant racism during my brief stints in the NE than anyplace else. Yes those people are here as well, but probably no more or less than in any other poor, rural area of the country.

I've actually been to Michigan Tech a few times and I can tell you with certainty that the "Upers" are as badly southern as any southerner out there. And I say "southern" in the most derogatory possible Bush-voting way.

What's that part of Michigan that's located above the U.P? Kinda above and to the left of Lake Michigan.

My friend has a cabin there (little town called Iron Mountain near Wisconsin border) and invited me to spend a few days to see what the country's like where he grew up. I'm prepared for the whole deliverance experience but maybe it will be fun!

Looking at the map, it's not too far north of Green Bay. Maybe I can go heckle Favre! : )

Eh? You need to be more specific! It's all called the Upper Peninsula. There is Isle Royale in Lake Superior which is a National Park. The only national park that's an island! I was thinking of taking a week vacation there and hike the island but that didn't happen this year. Hopefully next year. Anyway, below that and off to the right is the Keeweenaw (key-wah-naw) Peninsula.

It is! There's a river (Menominee River) along a third of it but yeah Wisconsin is on the other side.

If you want to see something really interesting go to Iron Mountain during the annual ski jumping competition. Its interesting to see on tv but its really something standing on the hill watching them fly by. Plus its a hell of a party.

I watched this maybe 6-7 times last night. Could not stop laughing. A few of my co-workers on the floor came to see what was so funny and most of em were laughing their asses off too.

My 2nd husband was from Escanaba (in the UP). When his dad was a kid, his dog pulled some clean sheets down from off a laundry line, got them dirty. So his grandfather made his dad shoot his dog as punishment. Can you imagine being 10 years old and forced to shoot your own dog?

You're asking a question that doesn't match up properly to this instance. Very lawyerly.

Whether or not me noticing this "thing" is very super ultra gay is offensive to it/he/she or not, does not mean it is gay bashing. I would never hurt him...or anyone for that matter. Anyone who would hurt him based on the fact he's gay should be shot in the head, no trial necessary.

Now, on to your off topic derailing. Are racial slurs offensive? I would imagine they can be. It all depends on context though. Just like everything else, the words themselves should never cause offense by themselves. The context in which they are used should be the deciding factor. Words are powerless....context gives words meaning.
