It could be interesting to see what everyone's job is in the real world, purely out of interest. I've always wondered what everyone did.

You can add in what your job is, and what job you're aiming for, and what job you would have in a perfect world if you really wanted it.

My "job" is a Student in University doing an English degree - but I also work voluntarily in a mediation organisation, primarily involved in the Peace process. I only do silly low level jobs but it's good for the CV and still pretty interesting, you tend to meet a lot of cool people who have made a real change.

Ideally I think I'd like to go into journalism, or maybe even wing it as a writer if I could pull my finger out for long enough. Alternatively I could become a tennis coach, because I am going to do Tennis Coaching qualifications over the next few years. I play a lot of tennis. (At least that could get me moved somewhere warmer!)

Recently, I have been designing and building web applications that are sold to our clients... It's all private health information so everything has to be SAS 70 or Sarbanes-Oxley compliant, depending on the client, and SSL encrypted. I also get involved in random day to day fires that pop up, usually related to CMS (Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services)... I have worked with almost every department and soaked up as much knowledge as I could about the whole process, and I don't understand why some co-workers haven't. I like to solve problems, not shrug my shoulders and say 'i dunno!' I've got 10 years work experience in web design and application development.

My company photo id card says I'm a programmer/analyst... that's pretty accurate. I also applied for the just recently vacated position of Director of Applications/Development. I'm not expecting to get it but I'm enjoying thinking about it and assume it makes a good statement of my desire to move up. I have ideas that I think would change the direction of the department for the better... of course, the money has to be pretty good with the title of Director in a company of 800 or so people!

I'm a RAR (Retail Account Rep.) for Coca Cola.

I have a sales route that consists of about 8 major grocery stores. I order and inventory every Coke product that they sell. Coke's deal for grocery stores is that if they carry the product, they'll never have to touch it. Our company stocks it, orders it and takes care of all of the overstock and all the store has to do is collect the money.

My particular job is ordering and offering buy-in deals and promotions to the managers and designing displays, pretty much. As much as I suck at dealing with the crowd on this board sometimes, I'm pretty much a salesman irl.

In short, I'm a "coke dealer."

I write on the side and have been published a few times, made a little money off that too, but not really enough to call a full time second job. Still, it's probably the career I'd like to persue the most, it's just not practical to try yet.

I am a salesperson for a large manufacturer of Utility products in the Southern California marketplace (Mexican border through Bakersfield, with a few Edison sites near Sequioa and Yosemite). We sell through distribution, but my job is to call on both my distributors and also all of the Utility companies and cities with their own power divisions. I spend most of my time working with engineers getting products approved for their electrical grid, then funneling the business back to my distributors. I also work with the electrical lineman to develop preferences for my products. It's a great job, lots of fun and I get to spend lots of money on golf, when my knees allow.

I work for the Department of Homeland Security in the guise of the United States Coast Guard. My field of experience is medicine (corpsman / combat field medic / independant duty). Currently, I am stuck in a cube helping members of all services and their families (including retired and reserve) to obtain health care and fix all of the billing issues that arise with TRICARE. It's certainly not a glory job, but it's a nice change of pace and gives my wife a chance to live near her family.

Current: Set up and monitor special pricing agreements of electrical supplies for large industrial plants across southeastern united states.

Dream job: I have an art degree, so if someone would pay me for that...

Not the responses I expected thus far

By title I'm a Serviceability Engineer in telecom, I work with product development, customers and our internal support people to determine feature requirements and make sure our products are securely, cheaply and easily installable, configurable, maintainable, etc... before we go to market.

The other 3 halves of my job involve security auditing\consulting work and network design and deployment.

Fun job, most of the time. On the other hand I've been "in jeopardy" of being fired for 4-5 years as I don't directly generate revenue. Think of a bandage slowly being torn off for years on end.

I'm working on my International Business degree in university, which eats up most of my time. I also work as a server for a catoring company. 'm an executive and member/volunteer with: OXFAM Canada, Advanced Canadian Entrepreneurship, and MUN Liberals.

I work for Intel Massachusetts as a Circuit Design Engineer. My group designs future generation Itanium microprocessors. Thats about all I can tell you!

Quality assurance analyst for a 3rd party EDI provider. I test maps, XML and Java script, amongst other things (I am pretty much responsible for the quality assurance of the companies largest selling product, which is their web based interface.)

My aim would be to go for a management job at some point, a job I would really like I guess would be Sr QA for a video game company.

programmer/analyst for a software company. we develop operations/billing programs for home healthcare companies. very small group, but we just struck a deal with the largest home healthcare company in the world so we're expanding rapidly.

My title is Senior Programmer, I work for a Tax and Accounting software company on our Portal product.

Day-to-day, I code in Java, work as a DBA in MS SQL, and do Linux admin.

Pre Sales SE for a NetSec and and performance trending company. (NetFlow based)

Somewhere in there I get asked lots of questions about "How to do X."

I'm a law student. I currently do bits and pieces of work in litigation and legal academia. I'll probably be a lawyer pretty soon.

I work in Internal Audit, and do a lot of forensic auditing as well.

My job has bascially 3 hats -

1) Sarbanes Oxley - Test company controls to ensure we are in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley, and if not, recommend how to fix them.

2) Investigations - Similar to a Loss Prevention / Detection job, I do research looking for "bad people doing bad things" - so mostly looking for people on the "inside" stealing and/or manipulating financial data etc....

3) Process Improvement - I do reviews of various processes within my company to recommend improvements where the company could save money or gain efficiencies. This could be everything from how our distribution centers process product, to our investment strategies with our cash.

Seems boring to some people - but I love this shit, and would happily stay in this line of work forever.

Director of finance for a pharma company. I pretty much take care of whatever the CFO, sr director, and our corp controller needs. It's a drug discovery pharma company so our revenue is solely by milestone payments.

I am a financial advisor in a smaller danish bank, find out on monday whether I am becoming a business advisor trainee in october.

I'm a medical coder. I'm the middleman between Dr's and billers.

Anytime a Dr. writes an order or does a procedure, it has to be turned into a numarical value in which billers can then bill the insurance. I translate what the Dr says or does into codes. I code surgeries both large and small, emergency room visits, and labs/x-rays.

It may sound boring, but it's rather engaging and voyeristic. I work 40 hrs, Mon-Fri., no holidays or weekends. My entire job is flex time. As long as I work 40hrs, I can do it anytime between Sunday and Saturday. 2009 is the year everything is projected to be changed over to our Electronic Health Record. I will then code entirely from home.

I'm well paid and appreciated. I could do this until I retire.

15+ years in the United States Air Force.

I am the lead forecaster for my base's Combat Weather Team. I provide critical weather information to Pilots/Air Crews that cover the flight route for thier missions departing our base. Each departing flight has to have a "weather brief" to be legal to fly. We produce a 2-10 page package for each aircraft and give them a verbal mission briefing in our office. We go over satellite images, Radar shots, wind patterns... and many other things.

Stateside the job is boring, as the missions are usually training type or longhaul type carrying stuff to Iraq. When we go over in the "sandbox" things get interesting. The time I spent over there, I was analyzing "classified level" visual images for obstructing weather patterns. We were sending Unmanned Aircraft into areas looking for Bin Laden and I was basically telling them where they could go for the best visuals and how high/low they should be flying to avoid clouds/fog/sand.

Anyway, we never found Bin Laden but I did mark a cave once and they blew it the fuck up.

I used to work as a lab tech at a geological/analytical lab back home in Sudbury for the Ontario government. Once I moved to Alaska I decided I wanted a change and I now work full-time in a bookstore, which I love. Once we have children I'll be more of a stay at home mom.

I work a support desk for an accounting firm. We support all sorts of accounting software as well as your standard microsoft stuff. Certified with microsoft (not that it means much to most) and in any other company we'd be considered second or third level support. We have about 1000 people in our company and we also are outsourced to about 400 business clients. Not bad for only having 3 people.

I'm a paralegal at a law firm retained primarily by a title insurance company.

Just finished an internship and landed a spot as an upper end staff/associate position doing tax technology work in my firm's state and local tax group. I get to do everything from software integration between ERPs and tax modules to grunt data manipulation. In short, I'm an accountant with tech thrown in.

IT Field Services Engineer (Department of Defense contractor) doing network support and client-side computer maintenance for the 419th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. The squadron has about 700 people and I'm solo supporting everyone atm by doing the work of two people alone. My boss in her infinite wisdom decided that since I'm such a hard worker that I can handle the responsibility of all the crap I do. At least there's some advantages to working 10 miles away from her. I got Brittney hired into my old position when I was assigned out here.

Been working for Merrill Lynch for the last 2 years. I am the west coast member of the NY SQL Server Team--we handle all GMI-US production SQL Server systems (performance, C&R, HA,security, ML standards, etc.). I am officed at a large subprime mortage servicer in Oregon that Merrill acquired about 4 years ago, and pretty much handle all the prod SQL Servers there (2000, 2005, 32 and 64 bit platforms). Got promoted to AVP this year, but still digging for VP before I settle back. Up to my fucking ears in Business Intelligence projects atm...meh

Silly thing is, I have not seen my team in person in 2 years, due to travel restrictions...even had to miss mandatory AVP training. This sucks because my team's office is in Jersey City with awesome Manhattan view, PATH access and yummy slices of pizza.

I am the service manager and chief inspector for a company that repairs and overhauls aircraft propellers and engines, been there almost 30 years now, sheesh.

Currently, I run a small company called Ventilla LLC, which is a company I started with my brother and 2 other friends. The company is a signing service that finds attorneys to close loans for lenders. The concept is to make it a full fledged title company.

We founded the company in Feb. 2006 with no money and $250 ea. per month. We operated in the red for 6 months until i acquired a huge client. Now the business grosses $250k a year with about a 13% profit margin.

However, I am leaving Ventilla, mostly because I have too many arguments with my friends about my salary, and partly because I want to pursue other interests. I am currently training my replacement and then moving to Dallas in 3 weeks. I don't have a job lined up there. More than likely I will find a temporary job until I can launch another business.

I am a plummer/pipefitter. Do mostly comercial/idustrial stuff.....not really any housing as that is built by illegals around here that get paid cash daily. Pretty dirty job but I was sick of cube life, most everything I do is brand new so I dont deal with any brown trouts! It was a major change of pace for me, but I really enjoy the work.

Currently a student, in microbiology, who will be taking his MCATs soon. This past summer I've done research dealing with infection control and hospital surfaces . I hope to be able to submit my paper as lead author for publication sometime later this year.

I'm a licensed Property & Casualty agent working for one of the top insurer's in the US (Auto/Motorcycle/Boat/RV). I spend most of my time auditing the work done by our reps, and training/leading a team of around 15 people.

I was a Corpsman (Medic/EMT for you civilians) in the United States Navy until 1993.

Since then I have done a few odd jobs, but have been working for a large west coast ISP for the last 10 years in the Network Engineering Department.

Pretty much it really...

I'm a postdoctoral research fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. I am part of the "Helios" project, (http://helios.lbl.gov) which is focusing on converting solar energy directly into usable fuels (such as hydrogen or ethanol). Right now I'm working on the oxidative side of things, that is converting water to oxygen and protons using light as the energy input. Am just finishing up my current project and am writing the paper. Hopefully I'll get into the reductive side, protons to hydrogen, and maybe some day be able to complete the circuit.

In a couple of years I plan on becoming a professor at a research university somewhere in the U.S. Of course, I have to get smart first.

I'm currently a quality control metalurgist for a circuit board manufacturer. I examine cross sections of boards off our production lines to make sure that the metals being plated onto the boards are being applied evenly and cleanly. It's boring, menial work that doesn't really register on the excitement-o-meter, but it pays well.

However, I'm also training to take over the 3rd shift QC Chemist position (currently working a 3/1 split shift for training...ewww), in which I'll be primarily responsible for monitoring and maintaining the operative health of about 75-100 chemical baths across 15-20 production lines. Still not glorious work, but it's at least far more engaging- and the day passes significantly faster when I'm in the chem lab.

I figure at 50-60 hours per week I should have my student loans paid off in about 5 years and have tons of industry experience; then I'll just need to decide whether I want to persue this as a carreer or go back to school to work on a graduate degree (or both, as the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive).

Yeah... I don't have a fancy title. I'm a make-up artist. I put make-up on pretty people's faces to make them look prettier.

When I grow up, I want to be a make-up artist for movies - putting make-up on pretty people's faces to make them look ugly, injured or old.
