omg help me I'm sunburned!!

Anybody have any good home remedies to make it go away faster?
My buddys and I borrowed a friends boat to go hit the bay and do some swimming and fishing, and nobody remembered to bring sunscreen. I was pretty tan upper body wise so I figured I'd live with whatever burn I got, but I'm dumb and didn't notice that my legs were the same color as the background of the textbox that I'm typing in right now.
4 hours in the 90 degree sun later:
I can barely walk, it hurts to wear shorts but it hurts more to wear pants. I'm walking like I'm 106 years old. It's embarassing.

Now would be a good time to bust out that Absinth and get drunk! Sunburn might not go away any faster but at least you won't feel it!

One thing I've learned in the past few years is that alcohol only hides pain if the pain comes after large amounts of alcohol.
Otherwise, if the pain is there first, it hides the affect of alcohol instead.
It's a shitty system, really.

I've had a couple experience with sun poisoning when I was a teenager and the only thing that helped was heavy pain medication. Applying aloe helps somewhat.
Sun poisoning (severe sunburn), ranks up there as the worst pain I've experienced. Felt like I had fiberglass stuck in my skin that would pin prick me in random spots every few seconds. The only temporary relief were cold showers.

lol, yeah you'll be too busy focusing on your disgusted taste buds to notice you're sunburnt!
Sorry you're burnt, but is there really any excuse for not using sunscreen if you know you'll be outside for a period of time? Will we be seeing "omg help me I got some chick pregnant!!" or "omg help me I killed someone while driving and text messaging!!" next? An ounce of prevention....yada yada... Plus the long-term damage you are doing to your skin can be deadly. Skin cancer is a serious issue that so many people don't take seriously, especially the young.
Hope you learned your lesson!
Try googling "sunburn remedies" and maybe you'll find something creative online.

Poor guy is in pain, and you just twist the knife in the wound... Seriously, how can you act all righteous about something like sunburn? If you've never had it in your entire life, then I can at least concede to the fact that your more aware of going out in the sun, but I'm pretty sure like 99% of people alive have had sunburn, so why give the poor guy a lecture on forgetting to wear sunscreen? Forgetting to put on sunscreen is also nothing like getting someone pregnant... getting someone pregnant is at least enjoyable, unlike having sunburn, so your off base there!
Seriously though, the only thing I know of to help bad sunburn is tylenol for the pain, and lots of lotion and water. Staying hydrated will help it heal faster, and keeping the skin moisturized will hopefully prevent the god awful itching that can come with a bad sunburn. I feel for you man, bad sunburn sucks!! Plus you go around feeling hot all day, so you sweat more, and all around feel even more miserable!

You sound just like a parent right there, heh. Obviously skin cancer is a serious issue, and obviously we should have had sunscreen on hand. Nobody thought to bring it while we were trying to get our fishing equipment together. It just didn't cross our minds. Oops.
A few of you are getting so preachy lately -- all grown up since your EQ days when you called into work to play games and stayed up to all hours of the night -- Oh, what I wouldn't give for the infinite foresight and wisdom some of you seem to have.
I googled it before I posted here, and read about soaking it in cold tea and using aloe, both things I already know I hoped someone here had an idea for something more effective than that.

Because it's very easy to prevent one, especially if you have more sense than a child. I don't feel sorry for people who are sunburned. If they were too stupid or lazy to get one, why should I feel sorry for them?

my Mom used to put close-up cinnamon toothpaste (gel kind) on our sunburn. I don't remember if it worked or not, I just remember the intense pain of getting it applied. I'm not sure there is any therapeutic value but once the pain of applying it subsides you don't notice the sunburn.
Note: Mom still maintains that the cinnamon in the toothpaste takes the fire our of the sunburn.

As someone that was cut out of the casting call for the Movie 'Powder' because I was over-qualified - I can say that for my sun maladies I use the Aloe Gel that you can find in most any department store.
It goes on ice cold - does not sting and alleviates your pain for a decent time.
Other suggestions -
Change you sheets - nice clean cotton sheets are the win.
Wear the Borak swim suit to avoid chaffing
Pee on the wounds - no - that's jellyfish bite
Tongue therapy - if no human is around - honey and a dog will do.

*shrug* I guess I'm not because I don't see how stating what should be the obvious is being bitchy.
If he had come in and said "I don't like wearing sunscreen cause it's gross but I keep getting this nasty sunburn. I don't understand! What can I do to relieve my pain?" Then your response wouldn't have been bitchy. As it is, it seems like he's admitting his mistake and asking what the best way to mitigate it is. In that context, your response is bitchy.
Calling out the less-than-smart on VV is a tradition.
As far as I'm concerned, you're welcome to be as much of a bitch as you want. Just don't be all shocked when people think you're being a bitch.

I sure hope that you've never made a mistake that you later needed to rectify or mitigate, otherwise I don't see how you can justify being so blatantly condescending.
Since you are clearly older, wiser and blessed with common sense, perhaps you could pass some of your lessons on to the young, stupid, lazy, childlike peasants with poor vocabulary among us.
Try googling "sunburn remedies" and maybe you'll find something creative online.
Nope, apparently when it comes to posting something with content all you can do is tell people to hit up google. While still being condescending.
Neziroth: In my experience, there's not much that you can do that's useful. Put some aloe on it and wear loose-fitting clothes. If it's really bad, cold water can be nice as a temporary fix.

I agree with Lala 100%. Especially if someone is going out on a fucking boat. You people born in a cave or something? Sunscreen, man, ffs.
That said, I always found that cooling cream, Noxema (sp?) works wonders, especially at night. At the very least it is cool and it will keep your skin moist.

Well, I didn't mean to get Lala jumped on, nor did I mean to jump on you. I was just pointing out that you were coming across as a bit "righteous" in regards to your post. I understand your point that you don't have any sympathy since it's something that could have been prevented, but that's like chastising a teenager who accidently got pregnant. They already have to suffer the consequences, so why make it worse by pointing out the obvious? That was the point I was trying to make. Certainly wasn't trying to start a flame fest by any means. Perhaps think about how things may come across next time you choose to chastise someone for something as simple as sunburn.

Why do some of you guys feel like it's your job to lecture everybody who makes some sort of mistake?
Seriously guys, I didn't post "I went out on a boat and have no idea why but now I'm all sunburned." It was an oversight, by the time we noticed that we had forgotten sunscreen we were 45 minutes out on the bay getting ready to take a swim.
It seems like every time somebody -- not just me -- posts about a story or situation they've experienced where they had made a mistake, a select few of you get hard-ons and start waving fingers saying "Now listen here you stupid dummy!!! I don't make mistakes and I'm going to point it out to you in annoying fashon!"
Obviously, we didn't leave the sunscreen at home on purpose, if we had some I'd have used it, but thank you Canno, and Lalanae, for pointing out that sunscreen is a good idea on a boat, seriously, thanks.
I post shit like this here, because maybe somebody can help, or hey, maybe someone will find humor in my pain -- that's fine too, something good came out of it then. Maybe someone will share a similar story and it'll kick off a thread of sunburn peeling horror stories... (Sometimes that's how forums work, afterall. Conversations have to start somehow.)
...Instead everybody just starts trying to wave their e-fingers at me telling me how stupid I am to leave sunscreen at home when I'm going on a boat.
I swear to god if I ever lose my parents I can come on here and talk to you people so I can get that warm fuzzy parental lecture feeling again. I'm not trying to start a flame war, I'm not trying to start any kind of a fight, I just wanted to know if you guys had any home remedies for sunburn.
Sorry I ruined your day with my stupidity, Lalanae. I hope you lock your keys in your car tonight though, because you're really starting to need a reminder that you're not perfect.

I have always used natural Aloe. I don't think I could recommend any lotion or anything that has, or claims to have, Aloe in it. I think that almost every member of my immediate family keeps at least one Aloe plant just in case it is needed for something like this. If you happen to be in the Austin area, I think we could spare a few leaves to soothe the pain
only if you flay the top two layers of skin first though! I think it would be fun to apply aloe then!

If it's a serious burn (blistering, for example) see a doctor.
If you're just a bit red.. mild pain killers, lotion, cool showers.

"Flamevault", that's why.
Also - be aware of applying that green goop too frequently. Aslanna got me purple skinned one 4th of July and I was applying that stuff so often (only time I felt relief) that my skin started turning green. Literally.

Gotta side with Lala on this one. It's just stupid not to remember to wear sunscreen these days. No hawt tan is worth getting burned for.
Having said that (and having been stupid and burned in my youth), I recommend ibuprofen (unless you're allergic, like me!), cool bath (not shower), spray on aloe vera, and lots of water. And sleep on top of the covers with a cool fan.

I work in the sun a lot and end up sweating off my sunscreen so often I rarely even bother anymore.
I use this:
http://www.bananaboat.com/products/1000 ... seBy=Usage
It's a pretty thick lotion, and it keeps your skin moisturized for quite awhile. It may not soothe the pain as much as you'd like, but it ~might~ help you keep a layer or two of skin.

edit. Mak, coppertone makes a 'sport' line which is both waterproof and sweatproof. And Bullfrog brand has been around forever. Takes like 3 showers to get that stuff off. They even have a new line with DEET in it for combination sunscreen/insect repellant.

Sounds like an oversight that could happen. It sounds like he would have used sunscreen if it was available. It also sounds like they weren't near a place that sold sunscreen when it was discovered missing from the inventory.

Well... if no one ever "jumped in" threads, message boards would be pretty fucking lame.
As it may be, some of us would never forget sunscreen, and if we did, would go buy, beg, borrow or whatever before going into the sun for any length of time without it. Having skin cancer run in the family has taught me extreme sun caution.

Might be too late to help you out, but Cocanut oil cream helps a lot. I was out at a protest about two weeks ago and got horribly sunburned on my arms, and a friend of mine who swears on this stuff hooked me up. It worked really well/relieved a lot of pain. You should be able to get it at health food stores/hippie shops etc.

No but his title was "omg help me" after admitting he and his pals were too fucking clueless to take sunscreen into a situation that has about the highest risk factor for sunburn known to man and bolstered that by bragging about his upper body tan. Sunscreen is up there right under a life jacket IMO, because its not only the sun but the reflection that can burn you. I'm a child of my pale-skinned northern European ancestry but I don't care if its golfing, boating/fishing, working on an outdoor project, or anything else outdoors from about May 1st on through the end of September, I'm packing at least 2 containers of the shit (in case I run out or lose one).
For remedies, I've heard people talk of Warren's vinegar thing but putting a mildly acidic solution on a burn doesn't sound like anything I've wanted to try. Aloe and mositurizers are what I've always used. A soak in the tub or cool damp cloths can help if its really bad. Don't get the burn dirty or too dry. And don't fuck with any blisters if you get em: thats how people get nasty infections from this shit.

One warning - if your skin starts to blister (can be very small), get to a doctor asap.

Yeah if they forgot their lifevests and went out anyway and someone drown would his response be "Oh those darn kids!"?
Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:This is more a case of the cool kids ganging up on someone because of who they are rather than being able to give a straight answer or just shutting the fuck up and ignoring the question.
Thanks for the lecture dad. Honestly if you're only looking for "straight answers" VV isn't the place to ask. You need to accept the good with the bad. His join date is July 6, 2002 so he's been around awhile. I don't see why people are surprised by some of the responses. The description for General Discussion states: "No holds barred discussion. . . (Not for the faint of heart!). " So.. Could everyone without a 'straight answer' simply 'ignore the question'? Sure. But where's the drama in that? Some of you need to lighten up. It's not like he was caused undue mental trauma by posts on an internet message board. And if he has than sunburn is the least of his troubles.
All he needed to know could have been found with 10 minutes spent utilizing Google. There's no magic cure for sunburn other than prevention. Do you really want to be taking medical advice from people on VV? No offense but you guys are the last people I'd be asking that sort of advice from!
http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Boo ... 47/124.cfm - There you go. One of the first results from searching on 'sunburn cures'. And it has advice from.. you know.. actual doctors who know what they are talking about.
