Windows XP tech problem

Okay... this has me stunted.

I had to reinstall Everquest yesterday. Everything was fine, until my computer rebooted while I was reinstalling PoP. Now, whenever I try to install it, it tells me the 'ikernel.exe file cannot be found' because syntax or placement is wrong.

I opened up the PoP installation cd ( you know - right click and open ), and sure enough; the ikernel.exe file, instead of being .exe is seen as '.ex_' . That, of course, prevents me from reinstalling, since it can't be found. I thought it was particular to my cd, so I went to a friend's and borrowed his. No dice, same problem. So it definitely is with my computer.

Now, I tried deleting all the files in the temp and prefetch folder in the windows one, then shutting down my computer and waiting. Still nothing; you guys are my last hope. I've updated ikernel.exe; still nothing. At this point, if there's a way, I'm willing to download the whole expansion from somewhere.

The exact error is 'An installation support file 'C:\Program files\Fichiers communs\Installshield\engine\6\Intel 32\iKernel.exe' could not be installed.

Yes, I've tried http://www.installshield.com... I'm starting to think I never should have 'upgraded' ( /snicker ) to XP.

A desperate Estrosiath... :(

Try un-installing what's been installed so far (if anything) then reinstalling clean from safe mode. If still no go, then do a system restore to a day or so before you had this problem.

-edit- from what I have researched about this common problem so far, installing from safe mode should do the trick since this file seems to be loaded into memory during the install, and also installing from safe mode will eliminate the possiblity of some other program interferring with the install.

a file with .ex_ usually means it is compressed. If uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work then have your friend burn his EQ folder onto a couple disks and just copy it to your machine. This usually works for me and is faster than trying to actually use the install feature. Plus you don't have to wait for it to update all the out of date files.

Of course I have yet to try PoP so maybe they changed things with it.
