What is a good brand of vaccuum that doesn't cost a lot? Preferably bagless.

Misogynist.

I have hardwood floors now, so I don't own an upright myself. Anyway, here are two random ones:
Amazon Best Selling and under $100
Extremely good, but serious overpriced Dyson

That depends. There's way too many factors in determing a 'good brand'. There are many things to keep in mind such as size of the house, how much foot traffic, any pets, etc. For a large house bagless probably isn't the best choice as they fill up faster and you have to keep emptying the cannister. Generally when it comes to vacuums you get what you pay for. Cheaper the pricer cheaper the quality. I spent a lot of time researching them a few years ago and ended up with a Bissell CleanView II Plus I believe. It was relatively inexpensive and got mostly decent reviews. So far it's holding up well but I don't have much carpet in my apartment so I don't use it too often.

We have a Bosh Formula.

Our house has hardwood throughout.
It's not cheap but it's top quality and really really quiet.

Dirt Devil something or other bagless WalMart $50.00 special. Hardwood floors throughout with 4 cats and not a single problem. It's lasted a year easily and when it breaks, I will get another WalMart bagless special.

I was wondering how many posts before someone mentioned Dyson.

Yeah.. Because a ~$500 vacuum falls under the criteria of "doesn't cost a lot"!

It does when you don't need to replace it all the time.

Save up and buy good quality!

I have the Dirt Devil Windtunnel. It ran my roommate 150 bucks i believe, but it cost me nothing to steal it from him when I moved out!

You Dyson people are just snobs. Fine. You spent a lot of money on a vacuum and you want to let everyone know. We get it! Not everyone has that sort of budget for a vacuum. And not everyone needs that sort of machine either. Which is why I said there are many factors when it comes to deciding!

Pay attention to the suction rating. Most of the cheap ones are around 5-6. The decent ones have a rating of over 10.

I don't believe that. Our Dyson is an awesome machine. However, I remember when I was a kid the Kirby guy would go door to door demonstrating how well it worked and that you could even wash your car with it for some reason.

People thought I was an ass when I said that I got the wife a vacuum for Christmas but then I told them that it was a Dyson and they all went, "Ahhhhhh". Besides it was a combined gift for both of us to each other. $500 != Doesn't cost much. But it comes in Yellow.

Haha, we had a Kirby salesman come by our place at school (we don't live on campus). I had personally never heard of them, asked for a price right at the start, and of course he said "wait until the end of the demo". So the dude cleans the entire condo, then springs a fucking $1300 price tag on my ass. "I'm in college." Oh well. We had a good 50 lbs. worth of dust and shit lifted out of our carpet for free.

The folks have a Kirby... they are, in short, fanfuckingtastic machines. However, for that kinda money I could hire someone else to do the cleaning with a lesser machine every week for 2-3 years...

That could very well be the smartest thing ever said on this board.

My parent's bought me a $300.00 car for my 16th birthday. A week later, they bought a $1,500 vacume cleaner. It was a Rainbow. You had to fill it with water. It would slosh all over as you tried desperately to hold it in one hand while vacuming the stairs. When you were done, you had to empty the thing, and clean it. Every. Single. Time.

A week after buying the vacume, they bought a $2,000 riding lawn mower. My first car lasted about 3 months total, then broke down in the busiest intersection in town during mid-afternoon traffic while I was on my way to work at McDonald's to pay for the insurance on the car my parents gave me on my 16th birthday.

I will forever detest the Rainbow and the John Deer riding mower, and still hold a special grduge against my parents for thier "gift" to me.

It was an awesome vacume though. That water trapped everything.

i have a roomba, and they're pretty cheap now... around $100. my only complaint is that my husband follows it around, and if he's going to follow the vacuum cleaner, he might as well push the damn thing, and the two $30 vacuums we already had would have been fine.

so like... where does the dirt go if there's no bag?

It goes into a cannister where a bag would normally be. You just pop that out, empty it, and stick it back in.

Update. My ~10 year old Bissell had been acting (and sounding) weird so I am now one of those Dyson people! I got one on Black Friday for $250 which I thought was fairly reasonable but probably still not meeting stragi's initial condition of a "vacuum that doesn't cost a lot". It's nice but seems to me to be a bit over-engineered. I am still not sure how to get to all the filters. Will see how it holds up!

Another option these days would probably be Shark. Supposedly they are just as good, and better according to some, but not as expensive as Dyson.

I have a shark; it was reasonably priced and it does an awesome job on a variety of surfaces. No complaints at all.
