Even though The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has only just been released, the game has already scorned some players. The reason? The withdrawal of the marriage feature in the game, particularly same-sex marriages. Their justifation not allow gay marriages between player characters was because they wanted to stick to Tolkien lore.

Turbine designer Nik Davidson says:

"The rule that we tried to follow across the board was: if there's an example of it in the book, the door is open to explore it. Very rarely will you see an elf and a human hook up, but it does happen; the door is open. Dwarves don't intermarry with hobbits; that door is shut... Did two male hobbits ever hook up in the shire and have little hobbit civil unions? No. The door is shut."

He went on to say:

"Tolkien was a conservative Catholic. He went out drinking with C.S. Lewis every night, and the two of them had a worldview that was -- well, let's just say it clashes a little bit with the sensibilities of East Coast liberals who make up the largest population of Turbine."

Jeffrey Steefel, the game's producer has said though that it isn't entirely out of the question.

"I just couldn't figure out how to get it all done with all the other things we had to get finished," he said

I've never really understood the appeal of getting married in an online game. Is it because people want to cyber, but are traditional in the sense that they can only pretend to have sex with someone they're pretending to be married to?

I'm not much of a roleplayer.

Anyone who thinks hobbits don't have gay sex hasn't seen the ending sequence of Peter Jackson's Return of the King.

There is a kinship (guild) that touts itself as a "gay friendly" server. When asked for clarification their leader said he is not gay himself but that he wants his kinship to be a safe haven for gay people - he said there will be no "you're gay" talk allowed.

If he really wanted it to be gay friendly he would have made an all Hobbit guild.
