You must be trying to get the do-gooders all ruffled up (and I have a feeling it will work.)

I'm a do-gooder, but I also am informed and open minded. I know that shooting a rubber band at a notebook across the hallway isn't going to hurt anyone, and I know that pot isn't nearly as bad for you as alcohol. If I had my way, the drink of Senators would be illegal, and the herb of peaceniks would be as plentiful as it once was. And I say that as I am drinking a beer, having not smoked pot in a number of years.

You're right Sylvus. It's no different than drunkards thinking it's cool they get drunk.

Actually I'm going to Reggae Fest this weekend in Austin, TX where I imagine I'll be doing some good by donating to the Capital Area Food bank, and yes most likely having a few puffs. i was trying to be humorous in the original post.
cheers!

I'll second the happy 4-20.
I'm a too-cool-for-school 12 year old.

Midnyte you uptight son-of-a-bitch. What's wrong with a drink and a smoke in moderation? Fuck me your life must be dull as shit.
Poor fucker.
Of course acting too cool for school is far cooler (just look at Sirensa, surely anyone who jovially mentions 4/20 must be a stupid kid instead of maybe just someone a little bored at work!)
I don't smoke anymore, but I'm all for Marijuana being legalised, it seems hypocritical to allow people to drink but not smoke weed.
So Happy whatever commemorates marijuana day.

That's ridiculous! I am UNEMPLOYED! And I have nothing against smoking marijuana, unless you're under 18.
I will grant you, however, that I am excessively pissy studying for law school final exams--and soon the Bar, but will happily be celebrating the fabulous holiday of 4-25 next week (aka my birthday and last day & final exam of law school EVER!)

Wow. You're an angry one. I said no such thing. Smoke away. But smoking pot doesn't make you cool and acting like it does makes you even less cool.

What exactly is the reasoning behind pot being illegal anyhow? Is it one of those "just because" things?
Amsterdam has it right - walk into a bar and order a beer and a hand rolled joint.
I bet that place is a lazy mess at happy hour
ps I celebrated 4/20 sorry if this makes no sense.

I hear that in Amsterdam even the cops smoke pot and are totally chill. And if you ever get caught and go to jail you just smoke up with the judge and he'll let you off and tell you where you can score some seriously monster chronic, yo.
In Amsterdam everyone smokes pot, even priests and other people that don't smoke pot in America, like my Dad. It's sweet. At McDonald's you can order a Big Mac and a side of reefer and Grimace will even smoke it with you.
I totally want to go there.

Nothing makes you cool. Where did someone say "I'm cool because I smoke pot." ?
Despite smoking pot, drinking alcohol, not wearing a seatbelt, and speeding... I am pretty cool. These things do not make me cool, I make -them- cool.
Happy 4/20 if you're into that sort of thing... I don't really need an excuse to smoke.

"Some of ya'll need to smoke some weed and see if it don't help the quality of your mother fuckin' life...If you ain't smoking weed because you've got a good job, then by all means make your paper boo-boo, but if you ain't got no job and you ain't smoking weed, I don't know what the fuck you you are doing with your life...It's just a plant. It just grows like that and if you shoud happen to set it on fire there are some effects...Hungry, happy and sleepy, those are the side effects." - Katt Willaims

A long time ago (the late 1800's through the early 1900's), in a distant land (Washington DC, among other places in this great nation), dissent towards the influx of Mexican immigrants was building. With the immigrants came a plant that grew indigenous throughout North America, but particularly in the more 'tropical' regions. Eating this plant (or smoking it, as was more common) was stigmatized as causing "murder, insanity and death." While these allegations were not true in the least, it was true that an alarming number of Mexican immigrants were found to be in possetion of this plant. A growing number of citizens and, by default, elected officials were becoming distraught over the rampant abuse of intoxicants in the United States, and (primarily) the lack of productivity seen in many people who were abusing these intoxicants.
In 1920, much of this came to head in the passing of the 18th Amendment, which banned the possession, sale, purchasing or transport of alcoholic beverages. While this was seen as an enormous step forward, there was much work to be done, and though prohibition ended in 1933, by 1937 virtually all other intoxicating substances were either illegal or (as in the case of marihuana, which is a derogatory term for a Mexican immigrant) taxed to the point where one could not purchase or sell it. The tax placed on one ounce to a person not purchasing it for medical reasons was $100, and medical taxes ranged from $1-$24 annually. In 1937, $24 was a nice pile of money, and many practitioners found it more economical to use other (non-taxed) drugs for what they used to use cannabis.
In 1969, the tax stamp laws were found to be unconstitutional under the 5th Amendment, as many states had anti-drug laws on the books, and purchasing a tax stamp would be self-incriminating. Thus, in 1970, Congress passed a bill that repealed the previous laws (to include the 1937 Marhuana Tax Act). The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 set up the "Schedules" that drugs are now categorized in, and banned virtually every recreational drug on the market.
As a side note, the LD50 (the Lethal Dose for 50% of lab rats tested) for THC (tetra-9-hydro-cannabinol, the high-inducing chemical in marijuana) is 1270mg per kg in male rats. This is the equivalent of aproximately 1 pound of high quality marijuana all taken at one precise time for a human male. The saturation levels for water to be fatal are similar to the saturation levels for THC. To date, there is no record of a person ever dying as a result of a THC overdose, although in concentrated form (hash, etc.) it is theoretically possible.
Bottom line, our ancestors hated Mexicans, and Mexicans smoked pot. Therefore pot is illegal because several generations have grown up knowing full well (!) that pot is evil, and no one in Congress has the testicular fortitude to stand up and say that this isn't right. Mind you, enough stood up to say prohibition was wrong, so maybe they would rather have thousands die every year doing something legal than save thousands from prison sentences for doing something that is safe.

Actually Hearst had huge investment in timber...Someone sorted out an efficient way to make hemp into good paper...Hemp's growth rate = way higher than pulp timber...Hearst didn't want his investment in timber devalued. He initiated a huge spin campaign in his Newspapers...Voila hemp was criminal...

Making a naturally growing plant illegal just drives me nuts.
The only time I could make a case for that is if the plant/animal was destroying other naturally growing plants or animals (fruit flies, etc)

That's exactly is... making a naturally growing plant illegal just seems... I don't know... ignorant, maybe.
I can understand man-made drugs being illegal, because they can be dangerous if they're made wrong or whatever.
Make it illegal to drive if you smoke, hell make it illegal to be in public even, but don't make it illegal to enjoy safely in private.
I've heard them argue that marijuana has 4x the cancer smoking tar that a cigarette has, but I don't know about you guys, I don't smoke 40 joints a day. I might not even smoke one.
I've never ever heard a good reason for it to be illegal.

i've been hesitating to bring up pot in the gun threads for days. i feel like some of the pro-gun people are probably against legal pot, though it seems ridiculous to me. at least there are beneficial uses for marijuana (read: euphoria, analgesia).
oh well. fyi, i'm three sheets to the wind right now, but i haven't smoked any marijuana. that's five minutes from now, and downstairs.
i like to smile, and i hope that all of you are smiling right now.
(that's what potheads want, other than legalization. if you're against it, think about that. we just want all of us to be happy)
p.p.s. tomorrow morning i will disavow all knowledge of posting this message.

I have never met a violent pot-head. I challenge anyone in the entire VV community (the world, even) to stand up and truthfully say that they don't know a single violent drunk.

I'm all for responsible maryjane. I don't partake, never have, never will. That's just my personal standing. Even if I were so inclined, I wouldn't be willing to roll the dice with my job.
That being said, my feeling is that if you want to drink, smoke, or partake of other substances, as long as your actions don't negatively impact someone else, that's cool. Just do it responsibly.
I think if the government had any brains at all, they'd set up production for marijuana and do state or federal controlled sales (ala Canada's hard liquor). If it was the best and purest shit available for sale, they could tax the hell out of it and make a shitload of cash.
The irony would be if they funded other anti-drug campaigns with money from marijuana sales.
