BEIJING (Reuters) - China has detained four people after a horrific accident in which more than 25 metric tons of molten steel engulfed a room where workers were changing shift, killing at least 32, state media said on Thursday.

An industrial ladle was moving into the pouring position at the plant in the northeastern province of Liaoning when it sheared off an iron rail, spewing out its 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,730 F) contents.

"The liquid metal engulfed the room, bursting through the door and windows and burying the workers," the China Daily said of Wednesday's tragedy at a plant belonging to the Qinghe Special Steel Co. Ltd.

Jeebus at what temperature does the body vapourize instantly...But just one microsecond's awareness woulda been horrific.

I think it is fairly safe to assume that very few people would have taken this type of death into consideration when making their "how I don't want to go" lists!

Holy shit, that is crazy. I would have to imagine at that temperature though you would be dead instantly.

That's a pretty nasty accident.

All respect to the victims of this tragedy, but I wonder how you would go about cleaning up after something like that? When 25 metric tons of liquid steel turns into 25 metric tons of solid steel that has been poured into a room, how do you get rid of it?

I was wondering that same thing myself.. Just have that whole room hauled away? lol

Cut it up piece by piece. Everything in the room that was flammable is destroyed, including human remains, and the molten metal would have filled in any gaps that were left by something burning up. Or leave it as a reminder to inspect the damn factory on a regular basis. Stupid Chinese and their lax labor laws. OSHA, as much as I despise those fruity-toot do-gooders, would have never allowed something like this to happen.

Of course, knowing China's track record, it could have been an "accident" and one or several of the victims was a particularly vocal governmental critic. It wouldn't be the first time the government has gone to great lengths to quiet dissent in the ranks, and it would certainly not be the last.


Not to sound like a conspiracy nut, but China is run by a deplorable government that, to this day, kills and imprisons oppositional factions, and I despise the fact that we import more goods from them than any other country in the world. Anything made in China could be made in the US, period. While it would cost more to pay the workers, it would not involve supporting a nation that slaughters its own people. I hold no animosity towards the Chinese people. I believe that people everywhere, in general, are inherently the same. Some people just happen to be ruled by despotic tyrants who would rather silence the masses than bend to their will.
