Wondering what people's thoughts are on the Plano\Richardson TX area, my company has a couple cool positions open that involve transfers to the area, I don't know anything about it.

Funny that you mention this, since I have been considering a move to the Garland/Richardson area for work as well.

Plano is nicer than Richardson, but Frisco is nicer than Plano. Frisco is growing really quickly though, so there are a lot of traffic problems in the area.

If you're going to be working in Plano you could easily live in Anna as well, it's just a bit north. The north side of the Dallas area is rapidly growing, and for the most part is pretty nice.

My parents moved to Plano a few years ago - they've really enjoyed it since being out there.

Texas - land of the movie theater/restaurant extravaganza!


I wish Cali had more of those - but it makes birthday's/Christmas shopping easy, as all I have to do is get them tickets to a show out there

As Xou said there's tons of growth happening in that part of the metroplex, and those are all pretty nice areas.

There's tons of more nice and growing areas all around it too, so really it depends on how close you want to live to the office. Within a few minutes either way, you could do condo/urban living, or house/suburban living. Or if you went Northwest you could even get into some semi rural country areas (probably soon to be gobbled up by housing developments, but still).

Grew up south of Plano in Dallas. Back when I was there, everything in Plano was brand new. Now, that is Frisco.

Plano has decent public schools and I hear that Frisco does as well. If you are a nature buff, likely not for you, but the Dallas area has more bars, restaurants, and movie theatres per capita than any major city in the U.S. (or at least that was the urban legend as I was growing up).

Everything up there is clean and fairly new and housing prices are downright reasonable (I live in the bay area now).

edit: I guess I should say I enjoyed growing up in Dallas for what it is worth.

Yeah, depending on where you are in Florida, the housing prices in Texas will astound you compared to what you'd pay for something comparable in Florida. The property taxes are a lot higher though, due to the way the public school system is set up.

i grew up in Plano. I had good memories there, but I'm glad I'm never going back. It is a haven for the rich. Everyone has a Lexus or nicer. Its amazing the amount of money there is concentrated in West Plano. When I moved there we lived in a field...the first house in the neighborhood. Now all of that is gone. I used to ride horses in Flower Mound, which I hear is like Plano now. There is extreme growth and a lot of big corporations are based there (Frito Lay, JC Penney, EDS come to mind). The people are snobs. The girls are good looking, but won't talk to you unless you have money. There are tons of restaurants there.

I moved to Austin from Plano, which are completely different places. No mom and pop places are in Plano, its all corporate chains. The schools are incredibly good. Plano Senior High was awesome (go Wildcats!), but you did have to deal with 17 year kids with Corvettes and Vipers and the like.

If you move to Richardson check out Bills Records and Tapes. Its still my favorite record store ever.

My hubby and I have been living in Plano for the last 5 years. Plano is an extremely nice, well-kept city, but as people have mentioned, there is a lot of wealth here, particularly on the west side. Having said that, there are plenty of middleclass neighborhoods (I live in one) that are perfect for those of us who can't afford the mansions, heh. And right now, there are a ton of houses on the market.

If you have kids, the schools are GREAT, and there are a lot of community activities, as well as parks, recreational centers, etc. There is almost an offensive amount of shopping centers, several great restaurants, and if you are an electronics-geek, there are 3 Fry's stores within 20-30 minutes of the city.

I don't visit Richardson very often, so I can't offer much insight on the city. I will say that from what I've seen, it doesn't appear to be a bad place to live either, but it's definitely an older city, and it shows.

I work in Plano, but live in Dallas... it's not so bad. Kind of soccer mom-ish, but it's not a bad place to live and work.

If you're looking for a place with a lot of culture, Dallas probably isn't it. Our 'culture' is mostly bars, restaurants, and shopping. =P
