(Pissing the night away, pissing the night away)
He drinks a Whiskey drink, he drinks a Vodka drink
He drinks a Lager drink, he drinks a Cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the best times

We seem to have imported the US-style plastic shenanigans of St. Patrick's day even unto the heart of England now.
I despair

Actually I get to the despairing after telling everyone who invites me out and tells me to wear green to "get fucked" then sulk at home in my union jack underpants.

Just bloody right!
There seemed to be total mass hysteria over St Paddy's day everywhere this year.
The weird thing is, In Ireland the celebrations are not as ridiculous as in other parts of the world, we just find a shed to drink poteen in until we either pass out or sleep with our sisters (while eating potatoes and of course kissing blarney stones/tickling leprechauns/listening to U2/watching Liam Neeson movies).
I don't get why people do all this "im irish lol" nonsense. I read of loads of foreigners celebrating by having the "traditional" Corned beef and cabbage St Paddy's day meal - wtf? They're just making stuff up at this point.

Nick, could you explain to my why it's St. Paddy's and not St. Patty's?
Thanks!

Guessing it was St Padrick, changed to Patrick when Americanized?

That's like asking why George Washington is spelt George Washington and not George Waashingtun.
The short answer is, "Because it just is."
Also, "Paddy" is a guy called Patrick. Patty is a girls name.
Also, we made the event, we decide what it's called bitches

Maybe you did name it...but our marketing owns you! So we take it and sell it back to you at twice the price!
Actually Patrick is the modern spelling of the gaelic Padraic hence the Paddy.

I don't think it's anything like that.
The short answer is, "Because it just is."
No actual reason then.

Arb took care of this one.
We have more green beer here on that day than you do so we'll call it whatever *we* decide.

What marketing? Nobody in Ireland really cares what you do, you're still about as Irish as the Queen
Paddy not Patty you beans.

Just so you know, most people here call it St. Patty's
That's how it's marketed here. I'm not saying Ireland cares.
Fyi, I'm Scotch-Irish by heritage, so I'm as Irish as I want to be...

Its just like Christmas. Its a fun holiday that has very little resemblance to its original intent. I'm not a Christian but I enjoy decorating and giving gifts.
Personally I never got into St Patricks Day, but that's just me.

It is Paddy! Nevertheless we bought Ireland! So the Chinese and Japanese own it now! And Michael Jackson owns all of your traditional music. So none of that pesky singing.

Well someone should just calmly point out that they should learn how to at least name the day properly.

Which is why I was looking to you for help. But, "Because it just is." tends to not be a very compelling argument when trying to convince someone of something.

It's not like he actually did what he's said to have done anyhow, so what's the point of worrying about the spelling of his name? Why not just expose the fraud of the "fable?"

In reply to Nool,
It's not really a discussion worth having, it is in reality St Paddy's day. If people really wish to insist on calling it St Patty's because they have no fucking clue how to spell the name of the guy whose day they are meant to be celebrating then goddamnit that is their right as an American.
It's also therefore an inevitibility that anyone who actually celebrates St Paddy's day that isn't a moron will give those people a look of pure

In reply to Nick,
They don't care about St whoever. It's an excuse to drink and pinch women not wearing green with a 5% less chance of being slapped for it.

That doesn't change the fact of the matter that it's St 'Paddy's' day.

I've never actually seen it spelled with 2 T's even over here. Though it is often pronounced like that. Then again I don't see much advertising...

Ok, I've never seen is spelled that way in national professional advertising...
Animated gifs are created by the same people who are incapable of spelling masturbate correctly...you know school teachers and that sort...
oh and before Padraic it was Pádraig (that's the spelling he would have used)...

And it's even pronounced differently in those versions. Gaelic is a really ugly language sometimes

Yeah it gets pretty glottal...but on the whole it's no worse than most Germanic languages...It is however very dramatic...and evocative...unlike a lot of the Latinate languages where you aren't sure if they're telling you they want to make love or they want you to go piss up a rope...

Boy, I hadn't realized so many people on these boards were Catholic! I'll expect this much fan-faire this Saturday, for St. Catherine of Genoa's Day! Although that one involves much less alcohol and much more church-going, confession in particular.

Drunk me spelled it B E E R. Sylvos and I went to Kells in Portland for an Irish Beer drinking festival and were hammered by Noon. Was a super green good time!

You may be 100% correct. You also might have come to notice that on this side of the bond we've totally fucked up the English language. Since I'm rather decent at spelling and grammar as it goes on this side of the pond, note that it's been spelled that way my entire life. That said, thank you very much for educating me.

I had just finished watching Casino Royale, so I actually thought it was a play on words regarding James Bond for a moment.

While I don't claim to be an expert on the matter but I believe Patty is short for Patricia, and Paddy is short for Patrick, hence Saint Paddy's. This has been my understanding of why I have always referred to this sacred date in such matter.
I apoligize in advance if this has been answered already, but in my drunken haze I didn't pick up on this in my quick reading of this thread.
