Re: Watchmen
Just saw Watchmen, loved it.
Looking forward to the DVD version though, seeing how they had the paper seller and comic reading kid in, and seeing what else was left out, but hinted at, i would guess around 30 min of extra footage (not including The Black Freighter).
I just hope im right.

Re: Watchmen
I really don't understand why anyone would find The Dark Knight more entertaining than Watchmen, except that they have managed to hear the phrase "Batman" somewhere along the queue for Walmart or whereever you crazy American's buy crap.
Watchmen was a substantially better movie than Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins or Hulk.
Unfortunately in our world, in all countries, most people are fucking morons who couldn't differentiate quality from the shit on their shoe.

Re: Watchmen
I enjoyed the Watchmen, but at the end of the movie, I wasn't filled with excitement and 'OMG!' as I was after IronMan.
You're right it wasn't more entertaining, but I am more interested in the Batman story and I love the way they re-envisioned it.
Both Hulks were crappy.
I Rorshach.

Re: Watchmen
Watchmen fell out of the top five with $6.35 million on 4965 screens in 53 markets for a total of $60.63 million. Unless it is a big hit in Japan over the weekend, $100 million internationally is likely out of the question, as is $200 million worldwide. Depending on how much it costs to advertise, it could still make enough to show a profit, but it could take quite a bit longer than the studio would have liked.

Re: Watchmen
DVD this Tuesday. Way too many versions what's going on??
(stolen from slickdeals thread)
Why anyone would get one of the first 5 versions I don't know. Odd that they announce a collector's edition in advance. A Nite Owl Ship sounds cool though! Too bad it's the Blu-Ray version.DVD Editions:
There are five editions:
1.) A Single-Disc Edition, available in both Widescreen and Full Screen versions
2.) A Two-Disc Special Edition - Director's Cut
3.) A Blu-Ray Special Edition
4.) A Blu-Ray Limited Edition with Nite Owl Ship (Amazon.com exclusive only - more details further below)
5.) A PlayStation 3/Blu-ray combo pack
A sixth edition will be released in December 2009, the Watchmen Ultimate Collector's Edition
Not sure if the Collector's Edition is DVD or Blu-Ray. Hard to tell from that. Hopefully both. I don't want no stinkin Blu-Ray!For those of you who would want to either double dip, or would rather wait until December 2009, they can get the Watchmen Ultimate Collector's Edition, which has five discs. It has the Directors Cut with the Tales of the Black Freighter material woven into the movie, new commentary from Watchmen comic book co-creator Dave Gibbons & director Zack Snyder, 2+ hours of bonus content (most likely all of the special features on the the 2-Disc and/or Blu-ray editions), including the Hollis Mason tell-all Under the Hood (previously released with the Tales of the Black Freighter DVD) and the complete Watchmen Motion Comics (also previously released).

Well, i know of a lot of people who bought Lord of the Rings in the small version, although its been known for like 6 months that a full version would come out a few months later, and then complained about how a new version came out.
And if the absolute veriosn is blue ray only, i buy a blue ray player

Re: Watchmen
I grabbed the Watchman standard edition in 720p back on July 7th off the newsgroups and it looks fantastic. There are copies of standard and directors cut in 720p and 1080p on the newsgroups
For those stuck with DVD players, you owe it to yourself to check out at least the 720p if not the 1080p version of this movie.
here's a short clip of the 1080p DTS (80mb) MKV (x264 format)
Watch-Sample, 1 minute, 82 mb
Look at the detail on Rorschach's coat and mask. The detail you see around the train tracks, etc. Having both 720p and 1080p versions handy, I could see a definite difference in quality if you are sitting within the viewing range required to appreciate 1080p
This is my new reference 1080p movie for high quality.
I can live with lower quality on a lot of movies but for the best of the best, you've got to go with as high a quality as you can muster because you are missing out on a lot of detail with DVD.
I'll find a way to support this film. I can't stand hard copy (Blue Ray poky and still a pain to use physical media) Maybe I'll buy a Silk Spectre Action Figure!
Someone mentioned the Motion Comic version of the Watchmen awhile back (can't remember thread). I've watched the first issue and like it. The only thing that bothers me is the male's voice trying to do the Silk Spectre's lines. It's horrible. But otherwise, it's a great way to view the comics. Thevoice acting is prety bad in genreal actually!

Option #2 on Tuesday and the gigantic stupid edition when that is released.
Re: Watchmen
I have the 1080p Director's Cut but haven't watched it yet:
Directors Cut: 3 hours, 6 mins
Theater Release: 2 hours, 42 mins
I'm kind of a purist when it comes to movies. I like to stick to the original release that I know everyone's seen when you mention a movie for discussion. It's like when EQ added the new models. Not everyone chose to see the new models (and they were uglier more often than not anyway) Sucks when everyone not seeing same thing. It's ok if some see blurry 480i and some see 1080p as long as same content!
Nice to have options though.

Re: Watchmen
It depends for me.
A lot of directors have thier original vision cut for length or heavily edited based on test screenings by the studio. You also have releases that add more content, flesh out characters, or have added special effects. I know which of my favorite movies fall under a true Director's Cut. I'll usually go out of my way to see as many versions of my favorite films as I can. I have multiple versions of a whole shitload of movies.
Donnie Darko
Dune
Lord of the Rings
All the Alien movies (Ridly Scott is adamant that the released version was his true Director's Cut. The new addition he did for the studio by request)
Abyss
Dark City
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Kingdom of Heaven
Troy
Hellboy
The Mist (B&W was the director's perferred vision)
Brazil
Those are off the top of my head. I know I have tons more. Those all vary on different levels from the release. Some of them are like entirely different films. This is also why I like alternate endings for movies, like I am Legend. The theatrical version was horrible!

Best Buy has the best deal on this, just FYI. The deal is: Buy the movie and get either the Black Freighter or the motion comic for 5$.
I got a Rorschach head case and the motion comic for another 5$ since I already own Tales of the Black Freighter.

I had second thoughts after reading some forums. Instead, I went for just the Director's Cut and no motion comic. When you open the case, there is a 10$ off coupon for the Ultimate edition, which has everything in it. A very tastless and tacky thing to do IMO.

Re: Watchmen
As in.. You're wrong, miir. If you include worldwide figures it made a profit. I also don't really agree on the "milking" part especially since they announced all the versions at least up to this point including the collector's edition in December. If they were milking the double-dip they would have been like a lot of movies and not even mentioned that.Fairweather Pure wrote:It cost 130 million to make and made 182 million worldwide. No clue what the advertising budget was. I'm sure it was a lot but I doubt $40+ million. The production budget for Watchmen has been quoted as $120 million or $130 million in numerous publication (see, for example, New York Times, 1/30/2009). Director Zack Snyder has disputed the figure of $130 million (Hollywood Reporter, 3/31/2009, p. 6), saying, "We spent way less than that. There was already $10 million spent before we got the movie on (development). What we got to work with is a different thing." Our budget figure assumes that $110 million was spent on production, and an additional $10 million was spent pre-development (presumably on acquiring rights and related activities).

Glad to hear you liked it! I've already watched the digital copy on my iPhone and even gone back and watched a couple of scenes again.
The opening credits are amazing. The Dr. Manhatten backstory being told while he was on Mars is my favorite part of the movie. It's a 12 minute movie within a movie.

It's a matter of taste. I'm sure my wife wouldn't care for it either, as she doesn't care for the SF genre (notable exception: Star Wars) and her commentary, or snoring, would probably ruin the movie for me anyway a la "Why is that man blue? Actually, my wife usually loves sci-fi, comic book and dark movies.
She just had no interest or empathy for the characters in the movie.
Coincidentally, she loved 300 and V for Vendetta.
After watching it again, I really noticed how poorly the story has stood up over time.
The cold war is a pretty foggy memory even to those of us who lived through it... I mean nothing really happened.
It was all just a bunch of fear mongering and political posturing.
The story just has a lot less impact today than it did 25 years ago.

I watched this again a couple weeks ago. It was the director's edition but I don't really know what was added. It seemed mostly the same to me. I still liked it! Probably more than in the theater since they had the volume cranked way too high there and it was veering into the annoying category.

Bump!
Not totally related to the movie, but if you like Watchmen give the HBO series a watch. While I haven't cared much for a couple episodes (I get that it is in the past but I don't need black and white!) it's been pretty solid for the most part.
They do go with the graphic novel ending though and not the movie.
While they do sort of explain things you'll get a lot more out of it if you watch the movie or read the graphic novel first.
The only thing that really bothers me about it is Laurie's character, Based on her previous history her motivations don't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me. (And what happened to Dan?!)
Edit: This explains some things.. But still not her motivation for her current line of work.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it as well! I've seen the movie and read the comic, but I don't remember details for very long, I probably should've re-watched the movie as a refresher before the show started.
Re: Watchmen
If you go back to the first or second episode, they say something about her pet owl and getting the owl out of prison. I'm guessing they were referring to the Nite Owl. They never addressed that again this season.Aslanna wrote:

The HBO show is very good. I did rewatch the extended movie version but it's really not a whole lot of help with the HBO series. I enjoyed most of the episodes. The final one was probably my least favorite. I can only handle so much "time is relative, I'm both places at once" before it gets too excessive. Dr Manhattan saying you will tell me in 10 minutes, 10 years, etc.
Was it really necessary to make Hooded Justice gay? (I haven't read the graphic novels so maybe that's how it was originally) It didn't add a thing to the story. Seemed thrown in for the hell of it. I'm a little tired of the forced LGBT component in every fucking TV show these days.

Re: Watchmen
Overall a decent series. As far as I know it was designed to be a single story so don't expect a Season 2 anytime soon (if ever).
I did have a few issues with the finale though:
I like how they tied Laurie in as a character as a nod to the past but at least based on what was said in the show I have a hard time believing, or even understanding, her motivations. If they really needed the FBI character in there, and I am not convinced they did, it shouldn't have been her.

It was very popular so HBO will probably try to add another season, looks like would be with a different director through if it happens. It would probably run into the same issue Game of Thrones had and suck hard after the source material ran out.

I liked it a lot too, but I really don't like "leave it to your imagination" cliffhanger endings on something they have no intention of picking back up. The whole time she was lowering her foot down to the pool I was saying "it's going to fucking fade to black before she touches it and I'm going to be annoyed". Just actually tie up the story.
Like, That just bugs me. Like I said - my preference is that if the director is coming into this knowing they intend it to be a one off, don't leave ANYTHING up in the air. If I wanted to use my imagination, I'd write my own story

Goodbye, Lube Man. Goodbye, eggs. Goodbye, glass masks. Most importantly, goodbye Yahya Abdul-Mateen in his most thirst-inducing, godlike performance yet. Watchmen, despite earning serious critical acclaim and ending its season one finale on a major cliff-hanger, isn’t coming back to HBO for a second season after all.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys revealed as much to USA Today on Wednesday, telling the outlet that creator Damon Lindelof really, truly doesn’t want to make a second season. And without Lindelof at the helm, Bloys continued, the network isn’t interested in pursuing a second season either.
“It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do,” Bloys said. “If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a Fargo, True Detective [anthology] take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of Watchmen, but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do.”
However, Lindelof confirmed to USA Today that, again, he has no interest in a second season, but has “given my blessing” to HBO if they wanted to take a crack at it anyway. However, Bloys said that without Lindelof, that’s a no-go. “It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way.” Lindelof, for his part, left at least a little bit of room open when speaking to Vanity Fair in December: “When I show back up in January, hopefully the antenna will be back up again. If it receives something that feels like it could be another season of Watchmen, I would definitely be inclined to pursue it. There is no guarantee of if and when that’ll happen.” But for now, it seems like a permanent exit.
So, that’s that. Hope you liked it while you had it. Remember way back when, when the main concern was how the show would move forward if star Regina King, who only signed on for one season, decided to go elsewhere? Simpler times. Besides, those fears were ultimately dashed back in December, when King said she would “absolutely” do a second season.
“Yes, I would absolutely,” she said when asked by Vulture about starring in more Watchmen. But then she continued, foreshadowing this very predicament that Watchmen fans find themselves in: “I know that Damon doesn’t even kinda have an idea of an entry point and an ending for a second season. And I know he wouldn’t come onboard for a second season unless he did. I don’t want there to be a second season if it’s not going to at least be comparable to this first season, which is going to be really hard to do.”

Re: Watchmen
Good. GoT should have ended a few seasons earlier than it did as well. Leaving people guessing and speculating is much better most of the time than what actually ends up happening.
