It's unfortunate that you simply can't capture the beauty of this game with screenshots. You just have to be there.

I'm sure it looks great playing it but I'm not all that bowled over by those screenshots. They remind me of EQ in too many ways.

after playing VG for a few days I'm not particularly bowled over by the graphics either. it's more or less a lot of objects just placed around on open fields.

I haven't played either game but take your pick of the screenshots on LOTR's site. They all look great:
http://lotro.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=62&siid=7
The Vanguard images remind me of those old landscape rendering programs that you set how hilly you want it, what percentage of water and some other setting and it would render you a barren landscape.
don't know if these will hot link.
LOTR's graphics have squirrels and more detail
Cute bear cubs
more detailed faces
Creepy monsters and detailed creepy surroundings
More docile critters and as luck would have it, the colorful turning of the leaves. A true next gen game would have some leaves scattered on the ground blowing around in the wind!
the look of the games seems to favor the LOTR game.

There's a LOTR thread over in the video game forum.
This is the vanguard forum....you know...for vanguard.
Or is this going to be your new crusade? LOTR vs. Vanguard. If so, please let me know so I can just quit coming to this forum as well.

Something illegal about comparisons?
Miir said the screenshots don't do it justice so perhaps the opposite is the case for LOTR. The character class attributes are interesting for Vanguard.
I didn't plan on campaigning for a game I've only seen screenshots of but you may want to keep your distance. The food forum is a safe haven.

Pretty nice screenshots there Miir!
A favorite (which is what fantasy games should look like) is the one Winn posted of LotR
This one really captures a nice lush terrain, the calm before the storm
But the BEST screenshot of all comes from a classic game from Verant
This is where it's at graphically
One of the more impressive classical monstermodels ever seen in a game, with exquisite textures

Rofl. I've played both on multiple settings. "Performance" and "Balanced" settings on VG have a shitload more detail than "Ultra High" for LOTR. Play before you make your claims sir. LOTR runs on the D&D engine, which is basically nothing more than wow + more bloom effect & a few more polygons.
I also wanted to mention that Vanguard's graphics shine in dungeons and unique buildings/structures, not so much with grass and simple landscapes (though some of those are amazing). As you level up more you'll understand what I'm talking about.

either way, I think both games have some good scenery. Vanguard's character models just don't fit in with it though.

I've played a little of both and LOTR blows me away. It is already ready for release. It runs fantastically well. It looks beautiful. To me it blows away Vanguard. I love the trait system alos. The character models are 10x better. It does look like a fantasy setting unlike Vanguard, like some else mentioned. It really looks like it's going to be great.

Damn. Those LoTR screenshots are hot. Very cinematic.
Looks like I'll be trying that out for sure.

Coming from a paper & pencil and Mud background, any graphics are a nice change. I never really had a problem with any of the games I played be it EQ or DAoC or VG. So long as I get to play I am happy. I really like the LotR graphics though mainly because they are so much more brighter and vibrant. VG seems to have a perpetual blue-gray tinge to everything.

Yeah, it looks like WoW vs EQ2 all over again.
I despise the dead look of both Vanguard and EQ2. I'll take color and artistic style anyday. That's also why Warhammer looks so tasty. They really seem to have nailed the look and feel of Games Workshop's world.

The screenshots I posted are using video settings that I use during normal play. I just hid the UI and grabbed a screen.
Keep in mind I'm running a pretty ghetto system (P4 3.2GHz with a 7800GS and 2gigs of ram).
I'll max out my video settings settings like they did on those LOTR screens and post some more.
I doubt they will look as good because of the brutal jpeg compression used. You did notice that the LOTR screens are lower resolution but 20 times larger? Very little compression on the so it's pretty fucking obvious why they look so much better.

EQ2 and VG aim for realism.
WOW and LOTR strive for style over substance.

Stop making excuses for Vanguard, it sucks. The screens you posted look like something from the 80s.

Vanguards animations are still top notch shit though =/ Really wanted to get into VG as I liked the world/classes, but ever time I'd run around/jump/fight etc.. the animations were so bad I just couldn't bring myself to continue.

That is what I am going to consider a "next gen" mmorpg. Something that is released finished and ready to be played from top to bottom. I will be patiently awaiting this to happen.

Haven't bothered reinstalling photoshop since reformatting, otherwise I would have tried.
