I looked this up on the intarweb but couldn't find anything to help me figure out what the hell is wrong with my tongue..
for the past two days it has been swollen. I have *no* other symptoms of anything being wrong.. I can't recall eating anything weird.. and other than it being some random allergic reaction I have no clue what the hell is up with this.
my freakin tongue is touching my teeth when I talk in places it shouldn't be.. it isn't fun to eat and it hurts when I swallow.. (not my throat, just the tongue)

I highly doubt any of you can help me or offer some insight since the almighty google has failed me, but if it doesn't go away soon I don't know what I'm gonna do.. (no insurance and it's more annoying than health-threatening anyway.. shit at least I hope)

so, swollen tongue anyone?
yeah, ick, bye ;p

p.s. no I have not been doing any nasty sexual anything because for some reason I think that is bound to come up.. all you mens..
it's probably a reaction but to what? and two days already? come on =(

is it pierced? I never had any problems with mine, but a friend of mine's tongue got infected like a year after she had it pierced and it swelled up. I guess it didn't heal right. did you try a message board or a newsgroup medical professionals post on instead of an everquest forum?

First off, I'd recommend going to your doctor (or even dentist). It sounds like it could be Glossitis, which can be caused by allergic reactions, smoke or other irritants, or eating spicy foods. It's a fairly common bacterial infection of the tongue, but if not treated it can be really bad because the swelling can block your esophagus and trachea, or just make it so you can't talk at all.

Usually it causes discomfort when speaking, chewing, swallowing etc...which fits fairly well with what you're describing. Is it your entire tongue that is swollen or is it a certain area(s)? Is there a change in color (dark/intense red for instance)?

IF it is Glossitis then the best way is to clean your mouth and get rid of the bacteria that's causing the inflammation. Brush 2-3 times a day, floss, mouth wash, etc. (Gently though, it's important!!)

Again though, I think you should go to your doctor, because they can give you anti-bacterial prescriptions or mouth wash that works much better than over the counter shit. Another reason to check it with the doc is that there's more serious conditions that cause swelling in the tongue like thyroid problems which can cause a lot of problems- from lethargy and depression, to heart conditions.

Could also be a low grade Anaphylactic reaction but usually you'd have some itching in addition to the swelling. Any history of asthma or allergies? You might try some benadryl. Be damn careful, if it is Anaphylaxis it can be lethal.

It could also be infection and or blockage in the sublingual salivary ducts. Try a lemon drop or two see if it causes an increase in the swelling. If so try a heating pad under the neck plus lemon drops...this will help push any blockage from the ducts...

My advice would be see a Doctor if it persists...swelling in the airway is alway potentially lethal...

Your tongue looks find in your pic.

A day or two of something unusual might be OK to observe but after that it's time to head to the doctor.

It could be from the lack of some essential vitamin or mineral as well. Take a multivitamin and see if that helps.

The symptoms you have described are indicative of an early South African Tongue-Mite infestation

no not pierced.. it makes me smile when you are so nice at being mean >)
there are enough smarty-pants here so that I feel comfortable posting and don't expect too many responses like "use a CH!" ..

I can't go to a doctor because I don't want to pay someone to tell me it's something minor.. only if it persists (day 3 here and it's a wee-bit better) will I do that..
it's still swollen but only on the sides, the middle doesn't hurt at all.
anyway thanks for all your inputs.. gonna take my multi-vits more regularly and smoke less (maybe) hehe
if my mouth explodes I'll keep you guys posted!

Yes because having your tongue swell up is something that happens all the time and obviously is a minor thing. If it is a money thing I can lend you 20 for your co-pay....go to a damn doctor.

As someone who doesn't have med insurance (and hasn't for 6 or 7 years now), I'll share my secret germ killer.

Listerine. That stuff kills nearly anything. I gargle it to fight throat infections and sinus infections, but i'm not brave enough to actually flush my sinuses with it.

Anyways, I have no idea what's wrong with your tongue. But if it's bacterial, listerine will probably kill it (though it may hurt like hell).

I was going to PM you and say this exact thing. Listerine rules.

Also, make sure you're drinking lots of water.

again, thanks for the advic0rz ;)

it was probably a reaction to something because today it was pretty much back to normal ..
and tyek go ahead and send me that 20 anyway >) although I have no insurance so I can't just do a co-pay -- I have to out-of-pocket the whole shibam =(

that was probably one of the oddest temporary physical malfunctions I've ever had~
