Have YOU ever stolen anything?

Since the thread where you've been stolen from was brought back to life, I just figured I'd flip it around and see if you've ever stolen anything? Usually there's a good story behind it if you have (I forget who, but stealing the guys wallet that stole his CD's is a good example).
I'll be the first to share:
I was living in an apartment with my wife (we weren't married yet). My mom was the apartment manager and her bosses had some guy that was a friend of their father that they let move in across from us. Well, this guy was a sleezeball. He sat out on the community landing all damn day smoking and just sitting there. (we lived on the 2nd floor, 4 doors, 2 to each side when you get to the top landing. His door was directly across from ours). It got to be that we hated to leave or come home to our apartment because this guy was constantly out there smoking and hacking up a lung, and you couldn't walk by without him stopping you and trying to engage in some dumb ass conversation. (I'm a personable fellow, but this guy like I said was a sleezeball). When I say he sat outside all day, I'm dead serious. This guy spent about 8 hours a day sitting in a little lawn chair right outside his door.
Well, eventually things got worse, he started trying to play with the little girl that lived next to him, her parents once came over to the guys apartment because he had a 7 year old girl (their daughter) in there with him, by himself. They basically told him that he had better not ever have their daughter in his apartment. So the sleeziness gets worse.
Well it turns out that this guy hit hard times and couldn't pay his rent anymore. (I should mention he was only paying half rent from the beginning since he knew the landlords father). Well, after a month or two, they finally got pissed off that this guy would take advantage of their generosity like that and had him evicted.
This is where it gets good... The guy still wouldn't move out. They had a court order that said that he had to vacate by a certain date. That date was fast approaching. I came home one day and the guy stops me and says he needs to ask me a question. He shows me a Dell advertisement and asks if its a good deal. Well this was about 8 years ago and at the time is was a very nice system. I tell him it's a good deal and he tells me he's gonna order two of them, one for him and one for his daughter. A few days later the guy tells me that he ordered the computers and that they are arriving in like 5 days. (Can you see where this is headed?)
Ok, so it's like 4 days before the sheriff and the landlords and my mom are gonna actually throw this guys shit out on the street. The guy at this point was actually out of the apartment but his stuff was still there. It's like 6 days later and I'm wondering if his computers have arrived. I open up his door (it wasn't locked since he had lost his keys somehow) and there on the floor of his living room in a brand new box is a new dell desktop system. Now, I know what your thinking, and no I didn't steal it out of his apartment... that would have been WRONG!
Well, eviction day arrives, and everyone is all to happy to help. This guy has been such an ass among other things that we were more than happy to "help" him move. The sheriff that was there was good friends with the landlords and my mom, so he basically said that it would be ashame if some of the guys stuff got broken. The guy was there that day because he knew that all his shit was getting thrown on the street. Now I'm not sure if you all know how this works, but you have to leave the property and are not allowed back on it. All your shit is moved to the closest public place (the street). Here we are throwing this guys shit off the 2nd floor balcony. His couch, his dresser, his bed... everything flying off the second floor balcony to crash into the parking lot. It was awesome!! Before you feel bad, trust me, this guy deserved everything he got an more! Well, the guy was smart enough to grab one of the desktop systems and put it in his car. The other box though he couldn't fit in his car so he put it on the hood of his car and drove the car next door to the community center parking lot which was on the other side of a big privacy fence.
Let me say real quick that anything that is on public property that is not confined to personal property (i.e. inside your car) is considered public property. I'll make a long story short... the guy is keeping a hawk eye on his car the whole time because he doesn't want anyone stealing the computer off the hood of his car. He's sitting in the ditch where all his now broken furniture is lying. He's about 100 yards away from his car. One of the maintenence guys sets it up to distract the guy so that I can go over and snatch the computer off the hood of this guys car. Well, it works. He turns his head to talk to the guy, (I had crept over to the car before hand, it was an elaborate scheme we set up!), I grab the box and take off running. The only problem is, I've got to run around behind the apartments and this 7 foot wooden fence is in the way. I think the fence ends around back, but it doesn't.... I'm stuck!! I've got limited time because this guy is gonna notice his computer missing and come looking, and here I am running up and down this fenceline trying to think of what the hell to do. I'm carrying a 50lb box with me too! I can't toss the computer box over the fence cuz it'll smash it all to hell. I set it down in front of a car that was parked there (out of line of sight) and go to get my car to pick it up. Well, this guy that was pulling out of the center sees me and asks me what the hell I'm doing. I tell him nothing and run around the block back to my apartment. I get in my car to go over and pick up the computer and I shit you not, as I'm about to pull into the parking lot, I see that guy that asked what was going on leading a sheriff into the parking lot. He shows the sheriff the box and at this point I'm scared shitless because I think I'm going to jail for theft.
I wait in my apartment and all of a sudden I hear someone coming up the stairs. I'm sure it's the police, I'm freaking out. Someone knocks on the door and I open it and it turns out to be the maintenence guy telling me to go get the computer! He says the sheriff came over and asked who's computer it was, the maintenence guy tells him it belongs to the guy that's being evicted and that people have been stealing his shit all morning. The sheriff laughs and tells the guy that if he wants the computer he had better go get it quick. Well, we head down, grab the box and sure enough, it was the box that had the tower case in it. (I should also mention that this box was unmarked at the time, and I had a sinking feeling I may have been doing all this for a 19" CRT monitor.)
I was the proud new owner of a brand new high end Dell system that I had stolen right out from under that guy's nose!
Sorry for the long read, hope it was worth it! Anyway, who else has a good story of some good ol' fashion wrongdoing?

Holy shit.
I don't know whether to be impressed or feel bad for the guy. Probably a little of both.

you stole someone else's shit because "anything that is on public property that is not confined to personal property is considered public property" and he's the sleazeball?
yeah, okay dude.

Yeah, I consider a guy that attempts to lure 7 year old girls into his apartment a sleezeball. I consider a guy that took the generosity of an old time friend and abused it to the limits that said friend eventually had to involve the law as a sleezeball. I consider a guy that chain smokes outside on the community patio/landing for 8 hours a day a sleezeball. This man contributed nothing to society... in fact he was a leech upon it. You two would make great friends!
My reference to the public property was to basically inform those that could read into it (obviously not you) that although I took the man's computer, it wasn't actually theft according to the law. I was simply the first to take what was considered takeable by the law. The law and those involved gave this man every chance in the world to move his belongings. He chose not to do so... he made a choice and he had to live with it. The result of that choice which was clearly explained to him is that all of his stuff would be tossed out on the street for anyone to take should they so desire.
I'd love to take the time to explain everything this disgusting, worthless human being did to everyone so that the readers here could see why it was in fact sweet justice what happened to him, however I felt that the story was too long anyway. More so to the point is to see if there were circumstances where often times the best of us, (again, obviously not you) will sometimes do things that we would not do under normal circumstance.
I do however appreciate your in depth and most intellectual contribution to this thread. As always, it's a pleasure to have you reinforce everything I believe in. Thanks!!

The guy's down on his luck, he gets evicted, has no friends and you top off his day by throwing his furniture off the balcony, calling it "awesome" and stealing his computer?
Who's a sleezeball again?
I've never stolen anything bigger than a pen, and I never will.

Wow, ok, I guess I'm the sleezeball. Thanks for pointing that out to me. How dare I feel bad for a guy that can afford two new computer systems, but is so down on his luck that he refuses to pay rent to the man who gave him a roof over his head in the first place. Nice to see so many people here that stick up for a child molester. You know, I think there's a thread in the current events forum where you can say how much you abhor the death penalty for serial killers and such as well!
Bunch of wimpy do-gooders!

I mentioned this briefly elsewhere.
When I was 10, my friend and I stole a package of baloney from a Base Exchange (BX) store while living on a military base. I hadn't been informed about one-way mirrors back then!
Anyways, while chowing down on the baloney walking away from the store, a guy came and got us after calling the MP's (Military Police). The shit hit the fan big time for that. My dad (F4 Fighter Pilot) was Squadron Commander or something at the time and of course the Base Commander and everyone else finds out about that stuff right away unlike in civilian life where no one knows unless they happened to be there. I had my Military ID privileges taken away for a year by the powers that be on base.
I don't think I was on the road to becoming a criminal or anything but that early experience probably did a lot to prevent a continued casual attitude toward small theft. I've never stolen anything not in digital form since!

Never stole anything myself.
And your..."Let me say real quick that anything that is on public property that is not confined to personal property (i.e. inside your car) is considered public property"... definition of public property is incorrect. That's still Theft. Unless it's proven to have been abandoned property.

Since I'm catching all this flak, I would like to point out that A) I've never stolen anything else. B) I never would have considered stealing this guys computer if he had been anything more than a waste of skin. I'm not condoning stealing by any means. See point B again if you question why I did what I did.
In reply to your statement Sirensa, I would question you this: If you were walking through a mall parking lot and saw a wallet laying on the ground, and no one in site, would you take the wallet? Obviously most of us would try to return it to the owner... now imagine you knew the owner of the wallet and he walked around kicking kittens and molesting children... would you still return it to him or would you pocket the cash?
You guys can call me all the names you want and tell me how horrible I am for stealing some shmoe's computer. The point of this thread was to see if people would fess up to the wrongs that some of us have done.

Wow, your lack of comprehension astounds me. I have never once said that I regret what I did, I have never once said that what I did was right. Since your reading comprehension needs some work, let me help:
1) The title of this thread is have you ever stolen anything? I related I story where I had. Thus, I have stolen. Got that part? Ok, onwards.
2) The only point I made legally, was that since this guy was evicted, and thus his once personal property is now made public, I broke no LAWS in taking the computer. Thus no criminal act was commited. Are you still with me... probably not but I'll continue.
3) I made it a point to state that under normal circumstances I never would have done such a thing. However, being that I was well aware of this guys past I had no qualms about taking his computer. Does that make it right? No. Did I feel justified in taking it? Yes.
Now if your feeble brain is able, try to understand that I have never once backpedaled in my story, my explanation or any other matter. I do not regret what I did, and I suggest if you like to throw out what you perceive to be big words like hypocrisy, you should actually know what they mean and how to use them in the right context. Obviously you've failed miserably here. I have a feeling that's one of many failures you've had since the day your mom squeezed you out into this world thus gracing all of us with your witty banter and intellectual, well thought out comments.
Thanks for your attempts at being a bitch, it's too bad you can't even succeed at that.

All I was saying is the definition of theft does not change depending on the character of the person you steal from. A wallet, on the ground, belongs to someone. My comment had nothing to do with the morality of the situation or whether you felt justified b/c the guy was an ass.
Also, this... is not true.
The only point I made legally, was that since this guy was evicted, and thus his once personal property is now made public, I broke no LAWS in taking the computer. Thus no criminal act was commited.
I'm not sure where you're from, but in most (if not all) places (in the U.S.), upon eviction, a person's property does not become a free-for-all. At least not until it's up for auction of some sort. And generally, whomever is doing the evicting is under some sort of duty to protect the property in some way, and could be held liable for intentionally destroying it. If you heard otherwise from a sheriff/cop, he was probably crooked (as law enforcement often is) and disliked the guy as much as everyone else. So all that means is while the act was CRIMINAL, your chances of getting busted for it were minimal.
Note that I'm only commenting on your definition of Theft and legality. I haven't commented either way on the morality of the action.
Also, I may as well toss in that I've been working in a DA's office as a prosecutor, so chances are, I may know what I'm talking about.

I stole some alcohol from Meijer and got arrested when my dad died last March. I decided then that stealing was stupid and to never do it again.
Then my brother had a double brain hemorrhage and I stole some candy hearts from the gift shop at the hospital and addressed them to him saying, "for old time's sake." He didn't understand since he can't really see anymore (yet, at least), but he'll get a good laugh if he recovers.
So I guess I only steal when family tragedy strikes.

In 5th grade I stole a several Micro Machines from the class bully.
With a group of friends, I stole a few bottles of wine and some cigarettes from a grocery store in 8th grade.
During junior year of high school I took part in a group mission to steal a few full-grown, flowering marijuana plants from a neighbor who used to grow and sell weed.
Saying I'm not proud of those things is a serious understatement, but I still pirate digital music and comics.

I took my car to get it inspected this year.
The next day I found a wallet in my back seat with $672 dollars in it. Must have just cashed a check or something. Further investigation lead me to a state inspection liscence and his phone number.
I never even considered whether or not he was a pedophile as I called him to tell him I had his wallet and money.

I'm going to join Sirensa in the opinion-of-law-students column and point out that your understanding of property law probably isn't quite on.
As for me, I've pirated some mp3's. I stole a pack of cards and a candle from a house party. The coffee table in my living room is stolen (I use it, although I didn't steal it). I'll eat food that belongs to my roommates if it sits around too long. I sometimes take more sugar packets and paper napkins than I need from a fast food place or coffee shop and use them at home.
I think that about exhausts it. I usually do a pretty good job about being honest about paying for things.

I've taken the "Do Not Disturb" sign from every hotel room I've stayed in since I was 14. I have them on my closet door. I have no idea why I started doing it, but I began collecting them.
I took the plastic ad holder, with the sign that was in it from a comedy show. The sign made me laugh, and I couldn't display it without the little clear plastic holder.
I took two different numbers from the Dairy Queen in the town I grew up in. You cats remember back before they had vibrating pagers to let you know when your order was ready and they gave you a little piece of plastic with a number on it? I took one for myself, and one for a girl I was dating a long time ago (two different occasions).
I palmed a billiards ball off a bar to cheer up a girlfriend of mine. (it worked)
I'm a bad person.

When we re-opened the restaurant that I work at. We didn't have a cue ball for almost a week. Finally a friend of mine and I got tired of not being able to play pool so we went in search of a "magnetic" cue ball at 9 o'clock on a friday. After hitting up the general places like wal-mart and the such to no avail... We ended up going to one of the other bars in town and snagging theirs

(They have like 12 tables and I'm sure are more responsible with their cue balls and replacements then my mngt.) We discussed trying to buy one but decided that if we did then we'd be highly suspect in the case that they would not let us and we needed to then gank one. After the deed had been done though, my friend saw someone he knew and decided to have a conversation at another table for five minutes or so. I was sweating balls thinking that someone would come up to our old table and we'd be fuxored.
Outside of that I haven't stolen anything of significance or to my knowledge at all.

When I was a kid (pre 15) I used to steal all the time, shoplifting mostly, some car hopping and breaking into houses..... I guess from the age of 10 to about 15 I stole thousands of dollars of useless shit... D&D books, lead figures, CD's... a TV from an electronics store once.... and various car stereos... never did anything with any of it.... and never really got caught (prosecuted). But it was definitely a part of my life.
I didnt read the rest of this thread, but Im answering the original question. I actually considered stealing after those years of my life, and decided that I would end up in jail if I continued... but if a life of crime coulda been profitable I would most likely have continued on that track.

Me and a friend broke into a local school once and stole all the glassware from the science department.
We felt really bad about it the following day (as we were drunk at the time) but consoled ourselves by making some TOTALLY AWESOME bongs.

Was 17 and the manager of two Shell gas stations (believe it or not..).. So I was responsible for getting the numbers and stuff for how many gallons of gas were sold each day and ordering gas and all that fun stuff.. On random mornings when I had to work, I'd come in about an hour after the shift started or so and reset the computer that kept track of the gas sold.. so with that done, there's now this extra money on hand for gas that has no record of being sold..
Music equipment wasn't cheap back then!

When I was a kid I pilfered Gremlins cards (trading cards from the movie Gremlins).
When I was 17 my best friend and I took all of the signs for a local mayoral campaign and posted them (around 60 or so) on the front lawn of another friend's house in the middle of the night.

When I was a kid (under 10, I forget the year, but it was in the mid-late 70s) me, my brother and sister took our allowance down to the local strip mall that had a mini-mart and a drug store.
I was trying to decide what retarded bubble-gum trading cards (they were like classic movie monsters or charlies angels or some shit) to get when my sister came in the store and pulled me out because I "had to see" this new candy at the drugstore two doors down. So while she's showing me this "amazing" candy (it was candy dots on a strip of paper FFS) the manager of the mini mart busts in and asks me what in the hell I was doing, then grabbed my arm and pulled me out and back down to the other store.
I looked down and saw I still had the stupid pack of trading cards I was looking at in my hand.
I tried to explain it was an accident, but she told me she could call the cops and tell them she had caught a thief or my parents. The choice was obvious since my parents were getting called in any event.
I got my ass beat HARD as a lesson to me.
I was so fucking mad I went back the next week, stole about $5 worth of candy bars and comics, ate them/read them and threw them and the wrappers down the storm sewer just to "get even". I knew I risked getting caught, but I figured I'd already been punished, I may as well "do the crime". (yeah, kids don't think this shit through)

Well, the only thing I know is that he had the little girl in his apartment with the door closed, the parents came over and started telling this guy that he was in no way ever to have their daughter in his apartment again. After that, I've personally witnessed several times when this guy tried to coerce this girl into his apartment. It became so bad that the parents of the little girl eventually called security on the guy. It would seem to me that when a little girls parents tell you to leave their daughter alone, and to certainly not have her in your apartment, and you continue such actions that you are opening yourself to accusations of child molestation.
As far as your computer, BEWARE! Ever since this crime spree I went on, I've made it my mission to steal computer systems from child molesters everywhere! I truly am a monster, and thank everyone for their chastisement of my crime.

Not counting digital stuff, all i ever stole was road cones, 2 years in a row. Had a christmas party at a friends, and me and some friends needed to go buy some more to drink, and while we were out, we saw a lot of road cones marking off some road repairs, and we decided that one of those would be an EXCELLENT christmas gift to our host, so we took one and brought back home.
And we repeated it the next year, so i guess im a serial offender now

I lived in the country so there was not much to steal from. A couple stores nearby but if you made bad relations with them you were gonna never drink milk or have an egg to eat again for the rest of your life so that place was off limits...
I think the stealing I did was when I was drunk around the age of 18, a few friends and I drove drunk to a Kroger Grocery store in town, it was open 24/7. I guess it was around 2-3AM, hardly any staff in the store. It was winter so we all had on these huge sports team coats with the huge hoods and millions of pockets.
I was casing out the shaving razor section and figured I would take advantage of my pockets by stuffing them with the Gillette sensor replacement packs... those things were like 20$ a pack, I think I took all of them on the rack... maybe 15-20 packs? Dunno.
We left the store without incident... we even bought a few things to make it seem legit, buy some, steal some too... whatever.
Other than that, I dont recall any stealing, but I committed plenty of vandalism and started lots of fires.... and the best fire was calling 911 from a payphone booth, then setting the booth on fire... laying a few beach towels that were covered in lamp oil across the road in front of the phone booth and waiting for the cops or fire dept to show up.
When we heard the sirens coming, we lit it and ran. There was a wall of fire that went up in front of the fire truck, preventing him from reaching the blazing phone booth... we hid in the woods laughing like idiots.

Razorblades (because they're small, easy to conceal, expensive, and everyone uses them) and condoms (because they're small, easy to conceal, and some people are embarassed to buy them) tend to be the most heavily stolen and most heavily watched items in grocery stores or convenience stores or whereever.

I'd like to point out, that when I stole mine it was in 1991, in the boondocks of WV with a staff of hillbillies and country folk that prolly saw me and didnt give a damn. That is the one thing you have going for you though, if you steal on midnight shift. Most of those employees hate thier hours and job and since the store loss doesnt affect thier pay, they dont give a fuck most likely.
They prolly steal themselves.

didn't read much in the thread but thought I'd throw in my randomness..
I used to steal makeup. That's right, it's small and expensive and stupid -- so I stole it. I also used to steal random things from stores like almonds and beef jerky.. I think I got caught once or twice but it didn't matter, I was young and defiant. I haven't stolen anything as an "adult" except by burning CDs.. I always felt the makeup thing was really justified in my youth because it was SO small and SO expensive ;p
but I've been a good girl for quite a while!
I've never stolen something from someone I knew, actually once I "stole" a jacket from a friend but she never asked about it... haha..
stealing from corporations is not as bad as stealing from "real" people in my opinion, but like I said I haven't done any of it in a long long time~

When I was about 9, I stole a Chunk candy bar. I felt so guilty about it, I wrote a note to the store owner telling her what I did and I attached the 25 cents and apologized.

Yeah, the only place that sells the razor blades in my area is the Super Wal-Mart. I don't have many options here in south-central Illinois. They have the barcode detectors as we leave, so you have to get creative when you steal shit.

You could prolly steal something and goto the toilet and tag/bag it and drop it into the garbage can. Then just wait for the janitor to empty the trash and go get it.
Hmm maybe the new way of stealing lol.

That's so not a "new way" of stealing. Back when I worked at the mall 14 years ago, that's what everyone was doing. My best friend worked at Specs (music chain store) and he used to dump cd's in the garbage and volunteer to take the trash out every day.

I've stoled:
About 8 or 9 street signs
An entire set of the different glasses this nice bar used to serve the different types of beer (Guinness, Stella, ect.)
A sign that read "Nationally Rated" from a church in Gatlinsburg, TN (because it was orange and blue)
One Gator Bowl endzone pylon
One Sugar Bowl poster
One Fiesta Bowl poster

I recently entered a residence by prying open a locked back door and took an interior bedroom door and cut a window screen.

I did a lot of bad things in my younger days. Once my first daughter was born and I held her for the first time, my life changed and I have never gone back.
Just the other day, I drove up to the ATM and there was a visa still in it. When I got home I called the 800# on the back and reported I found it. Now here is the kicker. A few hours later my phone rings and someone found my daughters cell phone at the skating rink and wanted to return it.
Karma baby!
