Nope. Exps go so slow. Everything was a grind once I hit 50. But, seeing that pic made me load up EQ2 again. So, I'm going to patch up and check it out. Maybe it will be better the third time around, hehe. Now, I just have to decide whether I want to play my bruiser or my warden.

If XP is going slow, you're in the wrong areas.
If you're 50, you should be finishing up on your Sinking Sands questlines and starting on Pillars of Flame.
Tenebrous Tangle has some good quests for excellent XP and awesome coin.
You could also be catching the tail end of quest lines in Steamfont. I blew through many levels in the 40s in steamfont.
LFay questlines start at level 50. Even in your mid 50s, those lines should take you through at least 4 levels without having to do one speck of grinding.

If you have EOF, I'd say Warden.
They have some sweet class AAs.
But if you solo 100% of the time, bruiser is going to be easier/faster to level.

<--- 58 Monk... Soloed 99.9% of the game.
Mid, yes they gave some bonus exp over Christmas but I got from 46 to 57 in about 3 weeks (51 to 57 in 1 week) and I've gotten 58 in the past week.
If you don't have EoF, go purchase it now

Screw the Sinking Sands. At 50 go to Kelethin (just watch out for the Royal guards) and pick up the writs for level 50/51 from the different areas, all are really close together. Then head to Lesser Fay and LEVEL!
When you zone in from GFay there are mobs 50-54 right there and as a bruiser you will be in PARADISE! Doing all 4 writs, should take about an hour will net you about half of your level, then run back and get some more... the really good part, and I dont' know about you but I'm constatntly broke, I made about 15 plat soloing there. I would easly fill up my 32 slot bag with relics and small chest items then usually about 5-6 level 49-53 spells as well... enough that I finally was able to purcahse my mistrunner (with a blue saddle none the less!).
There is also the Nybright area which you can get quest from and the Wu camp no matter your Qeynos / FP standing. Probably can't get Kelethin ones as a bruser... but as a bruser you should solo even better than I do, and I solo so easy I laugh every time I see a monk or necro looking for a group.
30s to high 40s? Steamfront, I swear the mobs in Fay drop more loot. My Necro just started pharming the Kelethin writs for Steamfront just like my monk, saving up for her Nightmare
I know you will love it, it's the best expansion of any game I have ever played hands down. And if you get bored with leveling and the writs you can get the Dwarven Ringmail HQ in Kelethin and the Oracle Robe in Butcher Block, both of which are fun and soloable at 50 (DRT is soloable at 30 probably though) and next good status.
I'm having so much fun I'm not even going to check out the WoW expansion nor Vanguard.

what is the best solo class for this game from start to finish? or what class solos really well but is also great in groups? I've got one of those all access passes so I might start dicking around in EQ2 again.

With EoF there's simply no reason for me to even be remotely interested in any other MMO for a good while to come, and soloing is easier than ever. Not a knock on any of the other MMOs, just that EQ2 has gotten better and more fun than it ever had any right to become given the state it was in at launch.
Best solo classes for me have been pet classes, or just about any priest.
Posted: January 14, 2007, 5:25 pm
by Marbus
Depends Kyoukan on what you like to do...
If you like to heal, Furies are very easy to solo and freakin' amazinly powerful for a priest class, especially at higher levels. My monk and 2 furies can AoE mobs for crazy experience.
If you want a tank, I would say monk or bruiser. Both can tank effectively in groups and even do Epic x2s if properly equipped or act as dps depending on the stance. They aren't as effective at Epic x4s though and will never "tank" as good as a plate tank. If you want a plate tank and be able to solo effectively get a Zerker. My guardian can solo very well... it just takes him forever it seems to kill anything, the monk can kill in 1/3 the time or less.
However IMHO out of all the classes I've played, the easiest to solo is a Necromancer. At level 18, with crappy equipment I was taking level 20^ one right after another for insane experience. Sure I could do more but that's a good sweet spot. I've also been able to take ^^^ with an Adept III pet just 3 or 4 levels below me which makes HQs very easy. The only issue is that there isn't as much Evil EoF content, however my guess is that the next expansion will remedy that. In a group, using their assassin pet they also outdamage most DPS classes of the same level. If you want a group, you can get one but you would never have to have one to get exp. The added bonus is that the houses in FP are so much cooler than Qeynos.
I agree with Niffoni, not dogging any other games but as I have played them all, I'm having way to much fun in EQ2 to look for anything else. My 4 year old wants to get the WoW expansion so he can play his hunter again since he is bored with his Paladin in EQ2... can't say I blame him, lol but otherwise we are all sticking with EQ2. Once my monk is in the 60, and Necro is in the 40s (a few weeks) and my systems are upgraded, going to start a Fury myself to play with my son. If possible I may get out of even having to purchase Burning Crusade at all.

Midnyte -
I soloed my Templar through most of my 50's in Sinking Sands - not a terribly quick thing, and your Bruiser shold excel there. I guess it depends on what your idea of 'quick' is.
Like Marbus, i'm having more fun now than ever in this game, about to hit 70 just in time for Unrest.
One of the better memories of old EQ was the line of people sitting against the wall on the zone to Unrest recovering from their battles with the Festering Hags - I loved zoning in and looting fine steel off of the yet to be claimed corpses -
Gonna picnic in that Gazebo.
Lastly Midnyte - there is a dearth of tanks on Luclan d'Lere ist seems - so many tells for them - not sure if this server is an anomoly or no - but meatshield get the chicks here -

The bruiser is gimped as hell, because I did a betrayl way back in the day and then ended up playing a warden because my guild needed a healer more. So, I'll stick with the warden. I need to get the Fay expansion. I just bought an X-Bos though too. Plus, BC comes out in a few days and I'm 12k honor points away from my off hand Swiftblade. /sigh too many distractions.

Necro is currently due for a nerf bat due to their ridiculously overpowering DPS at high levels. So if you start a necro expect it to happen at some point and don't bitch when it happens. But yes they are the number 1 solo class easily right now.
In all honesty, almost any melee class can solo effectively if you are in the right spot, with the right AA setup, the right gear to match your AA setup, the adept 3's, etc.
Do not overlook the scout classes as great soloers. Swashbuckler and Brigands are especially big classes as soloers as well as raid classes. As a swash, I am consistently number 2 on raidwide DPS....only being beaten by necro. The AA setup you can get for a swash to solo is almost absurd. With 9 AA's spent you can get an attack that spins the mob so it's back faces you, backstab, stun, backstab and loot.
As far as fast leveling, avoid most EoF zones. The mobs in EoF, especially at the higher levels, hit much harder and have more HP than the older expansion mobs. You will get some better loots from those mobs in EoF, but if your sole purpose is to level fast then you are much much better off in old world zones. The big thing is hit every quest line you can for the zones you want to be in....and exp will fly. I have leveled a mystic to 58 with 5 days played so far.

when you spend a point in a specific pool (druid or warden), they can't be moved to the other pool.

I think you can reset your AA points and move them to either but don't worry about it, just explore Fay and you will get 6-10 pts to put in the new area. The AA exp points a huge in Fay, just run around all the zones before you even worry about killing. Also when you kill a named mob it will give you AA points as well.

Each pool is independant.
Points cannot be moved from pool to pool.

It's so people couldn't pump 50 AAs into their class tree the first day EOF went live. AAs are content and allowing players plow though that much content instantly doesn't make for good game design

At 51 you can start the questlines in Lower Faydark.
You may also be able to catch some green quests from Gnomeland Security in Steamfont.

Wu Camp in LFay which is right past the zone in from Butcherblock. Be careful there though because the MOBs in the area on 59-60. There are a couple of quests right at the zone in from GFay as well, one of which willl eventually take you to the Wu camp.
Being evil you can't get the quests from the Royal Fae in LFay, however you should be able to get the ones at the Nybright camp which is at the Loping Planes zone.
If you want to do writs, you should be able to get those in Kelethin at the respective guild houses. The ones for 50 or 51 with the Southsayers etc... give like 6400 status each. Those are the same things you will kill for the first quest from the lady at the Gfay / Lfay zone. You can stay in that area and do 4 writs pretty quickly for close to 25K status, great exp and great loot at 51. As I think I said, I made about 15 plat leveling from 49-56 there. Tons of small chest drops and a good number of treasure chests as well.
Kilmoll said avoid the EoF zones because the MOBs hit harder and have more hit points. I have found, at least in my experience this is true but totally depends on the zone. Lesser Fay IMHO is much easier to level in than SS and the area right off of it (name escapes me at the moment) and Steamfront is easy to level in as well. Perhaps they give a few more exp points I don't know but as a 52 monk I take 2 53-55 Southsayers/Prophets/Sticklers at once with no threat of dying. Throw in a devistation fist if get another one on me and I'm good to go. By 55 I could knock all 4 wrtis out in like 15 minutes or so in that area (trying to get my Lord title - 1.2M status) because they couldn't hit me. Key don't use the extra speed boost that drains health

not sure what it's called on a Bruiser.
That being said about LFay, Loping Planes is exactly the opposite. At 58 I can take 2 level 60 or 61 Shadowed Men in Shadowed Grove (a portion of LFay) without issue, one on one they get me down about 2 bubbles. However even the little blood suckin' birds in LP almost kill me if they are 61 (at 58). DireWolves in LP are a little better but not always and the Redbeard Sents etc... most 61 mobs in LP get me down to 1 bubble or below, sometimes I even have to use my heal. Compared to LFay the mobs there hit MUCH harder AND have more HP. Using devistation fist in LP the regular MOBs seem to have about 11K hit points at 60-61, in LFay they are closer to 8500... big difference

At 52 be sure to upgrade your weapons to Mastercraft if you can. Speed in killing makes the biggest difference on a monk / brusier IMHO. If you are low on cash there are some drops usually on the broker that are even better than mastercraft for about 20gold or so at level 55. It's a couple of levels away but much cheaper than MC.
I usually hord cash and look on the broker for armor the 10 levels before I can use it and buy a peice at a time. Thus by time I'm 42, 52, 62 etc... I have a full set. That also means I'm continually broke though, at least until recently.
The other thing to note, as a brawler, is this quest from the Nybright camp (from the mender)... It's heroic but a group of 50s can kill them easily. The chest, woven, is a Gi if you don't have one. Have to do part 1 first but can do that solo.

Hope this helps!

After you suck the XP out of the quest lines in LFay, hit Pillars of Flame. The XP and AA from those quest lines are top notch.
In your mid 50s, head up to Tenebrous Tangle and do the froglok quests. Do Tasty Baskets until you can't get the quests anymore. It will net you around 3 plat.

Yes....most still active and in a raiding guild now. Some still have alts they are playing in the 50s.
As for leveling....I leveled a mystic up to 58 now.....In the 50's, you can do some serious leveling damage up in Tenebrous tangle by doing solo quests. Pretty much good for a couple quick easy levels with decent cash coming from them. After that I worked the Sinking Sands quest lines mostly solo/duo. That also is pretty good exp and several items and cash rewards.
I will say this....avoid Klak Anon...it is the worst place I have encountered yet for trying to exp.

Agree on Klock Kilmoll... spent a little time there for quests, currently working on Raincaller but try to avoid it as well.
I have sky but haven't spent too much time there, thanks for the information. Tonight is my night to play so I may head to SoS and TT tonight and check out those quests. Exp grinding w/o quests, only doing writs, gets pretty boring and I still have 400K to go on the status so I should probably take a break.
Thanks!

You guys are really liking this game, it seems.
I played a Necro in EQ for 5 years and I primarily solod (solo'd?) for exp and raided close-to-end game for loot. Would I enjoy EQ II if I really liked my EQ experience?

It is hard to say. When it first came out it took a while to grow on me and then I had a lot of fun with it until all my friends stopped playing. They definitely made a lot of changes when I was nto playing and when we came back it was still familiar but yet different.
The one good thing about it is that you have some familiarity with the world, although a lot has changed. Certain places will bring back old EQ memories and other spots you won't recognize one iota. The game play is completely different from EQ 1. The classes are fairly well balanced and pretty much anyone but pure healers and shaman types can solo very effectively. Raids are limited to 4 groups and each class can bring something unique and necessary. You can't really gimp yourself without being a complete idiot....and even then you can purchase ability resets for AA and some other special attacks.....but be warned they get increasingly expensive. You can pretty much customize your character to complement your play style....certain AA choices work much better for soloing and some for raiding.

Two different experiences comparing EQ to EQ2.
If I could make a comparison, EQ2 is kinda like a cross between WOW and EQ.
It's much more newbie friendly than it was at release.
Some areas I feel EQ2 has a leg up on WOW is the sheer volume and variety of quests, shared/contested dungeons (where WOW is all instanced), meaningful tradeskills and quantity/quality of endgame (group and raid) content. Also , the quality of players in EQ2 seems to be a bit more mature than WOW.
In 6 months playing WOW I feel I pretty much explored and experienced every nook and cranny of the game. In close to 2 years playing EQ2 there are still a ton of things I haven't done and places I haven't been to.

The classes are fairly well balanced and pretty much anyone but pure healers and shaman types can solo very effectively.
With EOF AAs, priest classes are far more effective soloers.
Maxing out the Shaman agility line (100% melee crit, passive berserk +dps/haste) and going up the Mystic tree to weapon mastery (all dmg spells > combat arts) gives you some pretty serious melee DPS.
I've been in groups on my lowbie (aa whore) mystic where I'm the main healer and parsing considerably higher than everyone else.
Soloing speed is somewhere btween my berserker and wizard... and a lot less risky taking on high yellows or oranges.

Mid,
Try /claim, too. They gave out exp boosting potions for people who have had an account life of 1 year, 2 years, etc. I think I'm still sitting on 9 of the ones that boost adventuring exp by 55% for 1 hour. I just hit lvl 67 and over 99% of it was solo.

Miir I think your assessment is pretty much right on target.
I did not play EQ2 at release but started about 10 months after release and have been playing for about 18-20 months now. I played WoW from realease until I started playing EQ2 but didn't play a lot the last few months...
I never even made it to 60 before I got bored, I had like 6 characters though, 5 in their 20s and one in the high 40s. They all seemed so similar, once the newness wore off it just seemed stale.
A friend let me try his EQ2 account for a week and I bought it after 3 days and have been playing constantly since July of 05... Even after all this time there is still a ton of places I haven't been. The characters also seem to have more individuality as well. A Fury is very different than a Warden yet both of them are druids etc...
Example, in the high 20s and 30s you now have Thundering Stepps, Nek Forest, Enchanted Lands, Zek the Orcish Wastest, Butcherblock Mtns, Steamfront Mtns, Stormhold, Splitpaw (with $5 expansion), Crushbone, Ruins of Varsoon and a host of small instance zones... there is just so much for each area you can level multiple characters and still no ever even see some of the zones at your level, if you just want to quest most of the time the experience will fly. Hence my Necro is 35 and has like 2 days played or something... Depending on what city you choose things are also very different as well...
I can't say enough about EQ2. It's not easy enough for my 4 year old to play yet compelling enough that my retired School Teacher / Special Education former Baptist mother plays some as well...

My level (almost) 30 mystic has had combat XP turned off since level 10. I did this for the sole purpose of maxing out her AAs as early as possible (love the mystic AA trees).
I've done so much content that I missed on my first 10 characters though those tiers. On the weekend, I did a ton of Nek Forest quests, most of them I had never done before. I also did a bunch of Butcherblock quests that I missed the first time through.
My latest fun thing on my wizard has been running the Fallen Dynasty trials. Farming monk pebbles to buy a funky title. Another area I've neglected is Pillars of Flame. Other than the obvious questlibes, I haven't dug into that zone very much. There's some cool quests in Shimmering Citadel that I'm gonna check out this week.
