Backing up DVD's

I need to back up some of my DVD's and looking for a good tutorial on how to. Anyone recomend a site or program for doing this?

to what format? i hear they can be ripped to .iso format using dvd shrink

to both AVI and an ISO so I can burn it back to DVD in the future.

Google DVDShrink for .iso (it's also great for ripping just the movie out so you can avoid all the menu/advertising shite)

If you're going to burn it back to a DVD I wouldn't go AVI. Just ISO them.

I've had a number of movies lately that DVD shrink doesn't work on. They won't run in the PC either for that matter. Bastards.

DVD Shrink is the best for turnign things into an iso. For those dvds it won't work on, use dvd decrypter first. Use the file mode in dvd decrypter to rip the dvd to your hard drive. Open that directory with dvd shrink then and create your iso file. Works just about every time. I have had only two movies that didn't work, Madagascar and Brokeback Mountain. In both cases, I could rip them though and just leave them on my hard drive and play them from there. I helps to have 900 GB of hard drive space?

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any "good" solution to DVDs manufactured with bad sectors... DVDShrink just barfs. You can rip the files and do some post processing to get them to .avi or MPEG1 and back on a DVD but it's rarely worth the bother.

The best solution, in my opinion anyway, is DVDFab Platinum. I'm too drugged up right now to post all the details, but you can find out about it on the net and find all sorts of copies to download in all the usual places if you're broke.
If I recall correctly, DVDShrink is no longer developed/supported. So newer protection schemes will stump it. There's two solutions (probably more) to get around this.. Either AnyDVD (my favorite) or DVD43. They're programs that sit idle until you insert a protected CD/DVD. It then removes the protection so that any other program can copy the CD/DVD unprotected. DVDFab Platinum unprotects CD/DVDs itself, but personally I just keep AnyDVD running all the time as it seems to be updated more frequently.
