yes, sad day to see one of the founders of one of the greatest bands of the 20th century pass away, i may be mistaken but didnt he take like dixie cup full of acid causing him to be insane for the rest of his life?

That statement certainly has none of the hallmarks of an urban legend.

I bet it's true...

have not heard the dixie cup full of acid story myself. i doubt he would've ever recovered from that kind of hit.

IIRC he suffered from mental illness before he started doing psychedelics which pretty much excaberated his condition.

There were times he would just wander around on stage, hitting licks on his guitar as the mood struck him. David Gilmore was brought in to back him and cover his non-playing and of course eventually replaced him completely.

I think it's true too!

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange
a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl,
year after year,
running over the same old ground. What have we found?
The same old fears,
wish you were here.

It was thought for a long time that he suffered from schizophrenia, but the diagnosis was shaky. Someone linked an article on a guitar forum i frequent that also mentioned a possible diagnosis as something called Asperger, which is related to autism somehow.

In a big Gilmore interview I recently read, he talked about Barret, and what he thought happened. Basically he said that Syd was severely traumatized by his father's death when he was 11, and that these emotional scars grew and were amplified by the frequent uses of acid and the massive popularity they achieved. He also suggested that Syd may have been epileptic and the acid, plus the flashing lights they used on stage would send him into seizures. Which oddly enough, people suffering from partial seizures show a lot of similarities to schizophrenia.

To sum it up, noone knows exactly...but he did have some mental trouble, and he did consume acid often.
