I thought that was pretty neat. You get some pictures of a place that most people will never see. It's very dreary, though.

Pyongyang is called "Propaganda City" for a reason.

Those blocks aren't pushed over... there are explosives set to topple them. They are all along the roads in the northern part of South Korea also.

The bridge used to get to the northern part of South Korea is also set to be destroyed. IIRC the one to the east was acciderntly destroyed a while back. If it was rebuilt, I have no idea. These bridges are or were guarded by the units north of the river. Extremely high visibility location that no one can just cross without authorization.

One other thing... if you ever go to South Korea and go to these bridges, stay away from the people that demonstrate there on occasion. The South Korean police don't screw around with people causing disruptions near those bridges.

When I was there and assigned to Bridge duty, I saw many people get a beatdown by them.

Actually "Propaganda City" is the city right on the border at the DMZ. Its a complete faux city set up to make the S.Koreans think that NK is the life of luxory.
There are I believe 200 total people living there, they have a very strict shoot on site curfew self imposed by NK forces there.

There's 2 propanga villages in the DMZ. One for north which is empty, and one for south which is a working village. The people who live in the DMZ SK prop. village get free healthcare and I think scholarships for their kids, as a thank you for living so close to NK. The bridge I went across omw to the DMZ had huge black and yellow barricades set in intervals on alternating sides of the bridge so slow any southbound invasion force.
A very interesting country, Korea. Great people, great food, hot chicks. And Incheon airport is awesome...very ultra modern, attractive and easy to get around in. Gimpo...the airport that handles domestic flights...is much older and less inspiring.
If I'd done time in the service I really would have liked being stationed there.

You aren't telling those two anything they don't already know. Hardened military veterans that they are.

I was born and "partially" raised in S. Korea. I still think it is one of the most beautiful countries ever

It's too bad those N. Korea fookers are so screwed up. Don't worry though - my peeps aren't the baddies!

My sister is S.Korean, adopted @ ~6 months.

I went through Incheon on the way to the US (it was very cheap and I love asian airlines, better staff, better food) and it was awesome, though at the time the free internet seemed to be about 10 PC's connected to one 56K modem (but hey, it's free...). They had some marvellous ideas about smoking areas hehe...

Sharni went there recently with her hubby, they had a great time, though it seems from their reports everyone drinks a shitload of whiskey. Matt is quite the journeyman pisshead, and he was scared by these blokes that would think nothing of knocking back a whole bottle of whiskey with their evening meal in a restraunt. The funniest part was the tour guide kept telling them where they could get alcohol like Aussies were all drunks, even though the locals could drink them under the table 2:1.

Yeah SK rocks, no doubt about that. I passed thru Incheon last year on my way to Hong Kong (another fave Asian spot) and it was very tempting to rearrange my schedule to spend a few days there. Seoul is one of the coolest cities ever, and I like Jeju Island too...very beautiful. I want to see Busan but haven't done that yet...maybe next time. I hope to get to Asia this year but it doesn't look like I will. I think I'll set my sites on Costa Rica or someplace a little easier to get to.

You are right, I mistated the city name. I should have said Panmunjom(sp?). I was stationed as far north as you could get without being assigned to JSA, but it was right at the DMZ area. This was in the early 90's.

Although, I wouldn't consider Pyongyang a typical city in North Korea.

Pyongyang is definately NOT a typical NK city. For instance, it has motor vehicles and paved roads. Another atypical NK city is the one visible from the DMZ observation area, Kaesong city. It's primarily a military city and is where the bulk of the NK military is housed. Using the long range viewers at the observation deck (it costs a quarter), you can see NK soldiers in guard towers and NK citizens/peasants working the rice patties.

Yuppers don't fuck with teh ROK's. They take their shit very seriously. Better to just hang back with your Soju and yer Yobo and be mellow. I was in Osan and Kunsan for a while. The area got better looking once you get out of the cities.
