this seems to have crept up out of no where (atleast on me)
whats the difference between am2 processors and 939's? (besides the obvious!)

Pie eaters need a 939.
Cake eaters need an am2.

the two most significant things (imo) are the energy efficiency and the jump to DDR2. you probably won't see that much difference in sheer cpu power though. they are priced comparably to the socket 939 line.
it's a 940 pin processor, but not the same as the socket 940.

Initial perfomance boost off of this switch has been at most, 7 percent. It's good moving on, but not critical yet.
I just never seem to upgrade much besides maybe the video card before replacing everything and you can still do that with a 939 socket MB.

Thanks, I'm asking because I'm finally going to shell out for a new pc but I'm not going to make my own this time due to sheer laziness. I don't want to be accountable for dead parts etc. I was either going to just get an xps 600 since I can get a nice 7900 gs sli setup with 2 gigs of ram for under 2k or with a nice velocity micro rig for a little bit over 2k and VM uses the AM2 shit. The only thing I was able to dig up was it used ddr2 and some people said the AM2 processors overclocked better than s939.
With the VM box I would not have sli though, just a 7900gt, so I'm still split on this decision. I'm thinking I should wait for the Conroe to drop to see if Dell will lower prices on the XPS systems even more and see what AMD comes up with. I'm not so hot on intel right before Conroe comes out.

You're not really upgrading unless you get the 2405fpw or 2407fpw!
It's like stereo systems...you need to spend the money on the monitor like you would for the speakers since that's what you'll be looking at.
mmmm 1920x1200. You'd then understand why HD is better on the 360.
On topic: I wouldnt be waiting for the Conroe to drop in price for quite some time. If you're going to wait until July 24th, then you'll get some good deals on the Athlon X2 chips. 40 more days of waiting!
With the Conroe, you get to experience first generation motherboard chipsets too. They usually blow and need firmware updates, etc.
If you are the type that waits forever, you may as well wait until the next gen graphic cards come out that support all the features of DirectX 10 that will be exclusive to Windows Vista. Those will be out this fall as well.
Too much waiting! I'm six months into my "every two years" total upgrade plan. So far, with the dual core Athlon X2, I've experienced no slowness that would make me want to upgrade.
A game that might change that is EA's upcoming Crysis Game:
A next-generation project by CryTek, makers of the dazzling FPS Far Cry. This game is running on the new CryENGINE 2 technology. The game is one of the the first announced to run on the advanced DirectX 10 architecture.

I will trade you my hdtv and my 14 inch flat tube tv and my 19 inch flatscreen lcd monitor for your 2405!
I didn't mean to make it sound like I was waiting for a Conroe price drop, but for the Conroe to make the other chips price drop. Though once Conroe is out I probably couldn't convince Dell to make me an XPS with an older chip either.
I really just want to be able to play all the current games with stuff turned on with more than 1.3 fps. My current PC can't even handle wow respectably (I built it for Luclin when it came out to give you an idea)
I guess I will wait more :/

No but I bet they will finally give some good coupon deals on those XPS systems the 2 weeks prior to the new XPS Conroe release... That new 700 is pretty damn sweet for an Intel Rig.

those all seem to be extremely expensive and in my hotass house an overlocked computer would fry.. i can get the same pc more or less from velocity micro for 900 less and the XPS 600 for 1900 :/
