Nine Inch Nails with Teeth

Last night, Trent & company played Red Rocks and I was pretty excited to see the band that lit up the Lollapalooza stage for me the last time in 1991. It was fairly nostalgic, but quite different than 15 years ago. Trent played (rhythm) guitar for most of the show, except for a few numbers when he took to the keys. They played songs from every album. Do they really only have four albums? It's hard to believe that an artist as prolific as Trent Reznor has been a part of only four albums with NIN during the past 15 years. They were all performed with intensity. These days, Trent is sporting a shaved head, and wielding the axe instead of the keyboard, but I really enjoyed seeing him front and center. They had a lighted metal curtain in front (the right two panels didn't work properly) and a huge partitioned screen in the back as well. It made for some crazy visuals at points, but I didn't think they used it enough.

The opener (Bauhaus) was a bit disappointing, but decent. It was loud with too much reverb and distortion. A woman in the crowd decided she wanted to flop around on the tarp covering the sound board, so that made for entertainment. Overall, it was more of a drinking audience than I was used to.

Overall, I was pleased with the performance of NIN, disappointed in Bauhaus, and the audience was fairly well behaved. It's pretty hard to slam dance at Red Rocks. One detail I was disappointed by was that there was no encore. Isn't this a rock tradition? I'm not sure if there was a curfew in effect since it ended at 11. I'm hoping that it won't be another 15 years until I see NIN again.

I'll be going back to the Rocks this Saturday for Umphrey's McGee and moe., so I'm pretty excited about that. :D

ROFL, Trent Reznor is anything but prolific. That's assuming you know the definition of the word prolific.

He has actually released 5 albums in the past 17 years.

Prety Hate Machine
Broken/Fixed
Downward Spiral
The Fragile
With Teeth

Compare that to a prolific artist/writer like Prince, who in that timeframe has released 16 albums, not counting compilations or hits collections.

One thing you should note about Reznor is that if you look at NIN's complete discography, following an album's release, he tends to spend 20 fucking years remixing the same thing before putting a new album out. That said, I can't really comment on whether the remix albums are worth buying - I've listened to very few of them.

As far as NIN shows go, they're fucking amazing live in my experience. They put on a show with Queens of the Stone Age opening for them last Halloween in Nashville that was fantastic.

That's hardly an impressive resume for 17 years of work.
While he could have been considered prolific in the early to mid 90s, he really hasn't done a fuck of a lot in the past 10 years.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to defend NIN's case for having a rather small body of (original) work. I for one am not calling five albums an impressive number, remixes included or not.

My point is that he's notoriously not prolific.

That's who I was thinking it was, but there were several pieces I did not know he was associated with.

I dunno if I'd consider him prolific either, but I love quite a bit of his music and of the two shows I've seen, one was excellent the other was pretty good :P Tool has only put out 4 full albums in 15 years as well, but they're one of my favorite bands. The term "Prolific" is pretty open to interpretation anyways IMO.

While I'm not a fan of NIN myself, that was probably the best review of anything I've ever seen on this forum. (I don't read this forum all that much so I apologize if someone gets offended)

Winnow has posted some great reviews in the Computer forum (e.g. Creative Zen Vision), but I apprecitate the compliment. It's nice to see people posting in this forum. While I agree that Trent is not truly prolific, he has done much in his genre. Looking over his body of work, he hasn't really done much of anything since the late 90s. I haven't been a NIN fan since my college days. Somewhere along the way, I dropped my angst. I have a few shows coming up I'll try to post reviews for. I'll be going to the CSNY show at the Rox in July, which should be good. I love the new Neil Young album, and he certainly meets and exceeds the definition of prolific.

I never had much angst to begin with, but I've always been a fan of his music... despite that I find a lot of his lyrics cringeworthy.

technically NIN has released 21 "halos" since 1989. While the majority of those are singles and remixes a lot of the remixed albums are so different/good that I think they deserve credit as a individual release i.e. Fixed and Further Down the Spiral.

I agree that it still doesn't count as "prolific", but I would rather that they release a quality album every few years as opposed to spewing out shit every 6 months.

I know this isn't really related but I also love the packaging of their albums. I threw out all my jewel cases years ago, but I can't part with the NIN cases.

Went and saw them in Camden tonight.

I agree with Xyphir, Bauhaus sucked. The only entertaining part of their set was when the guitar player picked up a saxophone.

Nine Inch Nails was good. Set was probably about an hour and 45 minutes or so. Trent seemed to focus more on his older stuff. He played a full half of Broken and about 5 songs from Pretty Hate Machine, and only one song from With Teeth. Also played a few non-album songs (Burn, Dead Souls, Get Down Make Love) which was nice to see. The crowd was funny. I had guessed it would be a bunch of teenagers, but I was quite wrong-- it was a bunch of aging goths. Goths are really funny when they're 40 years old.
