Traveling to Innsbruck in December

I am taking my wife and kids to Austria as a graduation reward for her. She is finishing her BSN/RN program and she wants to go to Europe. My mom's Church is going there at the same time, so we can piggyback on their tour price and hotel, but we are allowed to go off on our own, so If anyone has some good suggestions I would appreciate it.

I do know we have trips, already paid with the tour to Salzburg, Venice, The Castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau and Oberammergau (my daughter wants to see these badly) We have a trip to St. Moritz. We can take a trip to Kitzbuhel for skiing, but we can stay extra time in a city, get a room there and find a way back to the hotel in Innsbruck. so if there is something we are missing, please let me know.

We have 9 months to put a schedule together, and I also want to know where to find the best absinthe to bring home to our uptight country. We will have kids, so some of the more "adult oriented excursions" would be difficult, although my Mom is there and we are paying for her so we would have a built in sitter for at least 1 night. If you know any dance clubs, cool bars etc, that would be appreciated too.

Thanks again for your help

Fucking Euros man...watch your cornhole while you're over there!

Neuschwanstein is the classic fairytale castle. I've been there three times over the years. It was a fun place to visit both as a kid and as an adult.

St Moritz can be cold and it looks like you're going in February? I spent a few weeks there skiiing and the average temp was like -20 the whole time I was there.

Why did they pick Austria? Is that where one of you is from? Austria is a whole hell of a lot like Germany with less beer.

Berchtesgaden in Germany is nearby and that's a nice place to visit. The Salt Mine tour is fun to check out with the kids and there's also the Eagle's Nest (Hitler's hang out) with great views of the surrounding Alps.

I picked some up while I was in Italy and didn't have any problems when I got back - but then again, they didn't search my bag and I declared one of the probably 6 bottles of alcohol I brought back. I'd recommend trying the different brands at a bar/pub while there if you can. The ones I've tried all basically taste the same - like an ultra sweet black licorice. I've heard Logan Fils is one of the better brands, but never found it to try it.. and it's expensive ($226) to buy/ship online.

Enjoy the vacation.

I've probably seen more of the Canadian countryside than you without even getting into other countries.

Maybe you should leave the comfort of your igloo and get out and about a little more instead of just bitching about everything!

Montmartre for the Austrian, Un Emile for the French are ampng my tops...PM Arundel for more suggestions he's much better with Absinthes than am I.

And actually now that I think about it, a guy I know from New Orleans is in Europe researching and distilling Absinthe under the label "Jade" (pretty sure he's in France bottling since Switzerland only recently removed the ban on commercial distillation). But he's one hell of a chemist and has done a ton of research on traditional recipes from all over Europe.

LOL I think everyone got it.

Thanks for the info so far appreciate it. We have tried Pernod and a couple others, I like the ones that are a little lighter on the Black Licorice flavor. Tried one from Spain that had a much mellower flavor and it was quite good.

oh ho an igloo joke. how refreshing.

from your painfully simplistic world view, infantile politics, and your collosal ignorance about basically every subject matter you've ever discussed on this forum outside of comic books and video game consoles, it's fairly obvious to anyone who's been reading this forum that you've never left your home town. it is possible you have never been farther away from your house than the closest burger king.

and even your opinions on comic books and video game consoles are shit. if I cared enough, I would track down the exact austria tourism website you copied that from just to humiliate you more.

All of those visa stamps in my passports were just lies...LIES!!!

Would I get a special igloo stamp if I visited you up in the wasteland?

Yes I did, although I agree my Oprah comment was not funny, I tried though.

and yes I know you were talking about the Opera house, I was trying to be funny about your mispelling, but I agree it was a very poor attempt.

Kitzsteinhorn is nice for skiing. It's close to Kaprun, but that's maybe too far away from Innsbruck.

Augsburg is a fun city to explore. Also, there's Castle Hohenwerfen in Werfen, which is where they filmed "Where Eagles Dare" (link).

True but even during the ban, you could find the "fée verte" if you knew where to buy it ;)

screw Innsbruck go to the lake isle of Innisfree!

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear the water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

Ok, we leave in 3 weeks. We are now visiting Innsbruck, Munich, St Moritz, Salzberg, Venice, Florence and Rome. Most of the trip we will still be based in Innsbruck, but we also will be in Florence and Rome for a bit. Anyone know any fun bars in the area. The grandparents are going as well so the wife and I will get away for a few evenings.

The wife graduates with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing this week, so after paying out for 3 years we are going to finally start seeing a significant income increase and I would love to leave some of it at the bars of Europe.

Off the top of my head, some places to eat:

Dinner:
Hotel Bernini Palace in Florence (near Piazza della Signoria)
Any of the restaurants on Via Pellicceria in Florence

Obaka in Rome
Macheroni in Rome
Nino's in Rome

Lunch:
There is a great little sandwich/pizza place on Via de' Tosignhi in Florence, but I can't remember the name. It has a marble bar, stools, and a small display with ready made sandwiches, pizzas, etc that they will toast for you in their oven and it is reasonably priced (cheaper than the touristy spots).

The market,deli near Trevi fountain (on Via della Muratte, I believe).

Thanks Arch.

Question though is it Obaka or Obika, I was googling those names and Obika is a new restaurant there. It does sound great too.

Thanks
