What's the deal guys? Given that the Chili Peppers are one of like four relevant rock bands that still exist, I expect a thread!

The new album is pretty hip. Listen to it.

Just got it yesterday, only had time for one listen. It was a cool, poppy rock thing, but hardly anything special compared to (for example) the new tool album yet infinity times better than most other things.

I think Frusciante is carrying them all tbh (with the exception of Flea I suppose).

It was alright though. I'll give it more listens ofc.

the chilis have not been relevant for 15 years (blood sugar was the first full fledged steaming pile of crap, it's just gotten worse since then)

Flea's not happy!

RHCP's Flea Ticked Off About Album Leak
May 4, 2006

To anyone illegally downloading the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, you're breaking Flea's heart.

On Tuesday (May 2), the Chili Peppers bassist woke up to the news that Stadium Arcadium, the band's new album, set for a May 9 release, had been leaked online. An obviously upset Flea took to the 'net and let the culprits have it in a long, somewhat rambling, grammatically-challenged post on the band's web site.

"not that I know OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS about this kind of thing," Flea wrote, "but i guess now it is possible to down load it for free if you want. well that's not very nice."

And unlike so many other bands that have railed against illegal downloading, citing it as stealing from the band since the downloader will get the album for free, Flea seems most upset that the sound quality will be dreadful on the illegitimate version.

"if you down load [the album] now off one of these file sharing sites," he wrote, "you will be getting a pale imitation of the record. it will be of the poor sound quality of the technique they used to get it on there and that will break my heart. it will break john frusciante's heart. it will break anthony kiedis's heart. and it will break the heart of chad smith."

Elsewhere in the post, Flea went on to explain how hard the band worked to get the sound just right.

"equitable business reasons aside," he wrote, "the thing that really bums me out is we worked so hard, and so thoughtfully, all of us, for so long to make this record sound as warm and full from top to bottom as was possible. we spent day and night for a year making sure every little sound was just right that they were all put together in the most beautiful way we could. we did not leave a stone unturned in doing that work. i can not put in words how much this record, stadium arcadium, means to us how sacred the sound of it is to us and how many sleepless nights and hardworking days we all had thinking about how to make it be the best sounding thing we could and now, for someone to take it and put it out there with this poor sound quality it is a painful pill for us to swallow."

The band and their label are working to track the offender down, a spokeswoman for the Peppers told Reuters. If the individual who leaked the album is caught, he or she could face up to 11 years in prison, like the two men indicted for leaking segments of Ryan Adams' last release.

"everyone has to live with their own concscience," Flea wrote, after explaining that downloading the album is stealing from the band. "let it be your guide. but to take a version which has been defiled sound wise a version in which some idiot has taken our year and a half of soul baring work and pissed all over it that will break our hearts."

I don't think Flea knows about 192kbps+ or FLAC.

I'm not really in favor of leaked music. It should at least be commercially available before it starts making the rounds.

Having said that.. RHCP are relevant? When did that happen?

I really like RHCP, and each album they have done has been better than the last. They've developed immensely.

Anyways, I bought this album today, but I won't get to listen to it until next week. (fucked up circumstances for this weekend)

Though, to be frank, it's not Tool. So this forum will hate it. And Aslanna hates anything that is or has been popular. And Pherr just likes to rile people up.

It's rare for a first listening to be enough to write a review of an album IMO. Most songs take a few listenings to get the feel for.

Grabbing it now though to have a listen.

So what determins if a band is relevant or not? Personally, I think the chili peppers have always been really good and continue to be so.

I enjoy the RHCP and consider myself an avid Tool fan.

Did anyone happen to catch them on SNL last week?
I saw them doing Give it Away... and it was horrible. I always considered them to be an excellent live band (saw the live twice around 10 years ago) but they seemed tired, disinterested and out of synch with each other.

I was able to listen to the first half of the double album last night (14 of the 28 songs) I had my Sennheiser Headphones on and no equilization for optimal listening conditions!

So far, the songs that stand out for me are:

5. Hump de Bump - 3:33
6. She's Only 18 - 3:25
7. Slow Cheetah - 5:19
10. Especially in Michigan - 4:01
12. C'mon Girl - 3:48

She's only 18 and Especially in Michigan are my favorites so far.

When it comes to RHCP, I like their slower songs the most and the songs that include a lot of bass guitar.

Allow me to clarify: They are no longer relevant to me at this time.

I used to like them.. But stopped around the time that annoying Love Rollercoaster song came out. Or maybe it was Aeroplane. Doesn't really matter.

I'm not really sure how that equates to me hating anything that is, or has been, popular. I just got done listening to ABBA Gold!

That was awful on SNL. They have seen better days me thinks.

The SNL thing could have just been a result of them not playing any shows together in a while. I have no idea if they've been touring recently, but many bands will be a bit rusty if they've been on a break. They might just need time to hit their stride.

All this "relevant" crap is just that, crap.

When they aren't one of the biggest selling bands still even trying to do anything vaguely resembling good ol funky rock n roll you can sit in your insignificant apartment or home and talk about whether they are "relevant".

On further listens, I quite like this album, although I wish Anthony Keidis would just fuck off and shut up and let Frusciante sing. I still think he's by far the major talent in the band and he's just getting better with age.

When I initially used the term, I was using it as a very loose and ill-defined term that's meant to rile people up more than anything. I probably meant it in the sense of 'rock bands from my youth who are still around and making music which I enjoy and gets some sort of public attention for it.' Which means that the list is the Chili Peppers, Tool, and Nine Inch Nails. I guess bands like Audioslave and Pearl Jam are sort of on the fringe of that definition. Regardless, it doesn't really mean anything.

Winnow, I largely agree with the songs you like. There are a few scattered around that I tend to skip, but I do that on every album.

I don't know nearly enough about music to respond intelligently to people who can't stand them. I enjoy listening to the music, it puts me in a good mood, and I'm perfectly happy with that setup. Music is incredibly complex, and to have true understanding of it requires an incredible amount of time spent listening to, performing, and thinking about music. I'm happy to lack this sort of true understanding, and comfortable in the knowledge that most people who vehemently disagree with my tastes are just as ignorant.

After hearing it a few more times, I think my original opinion might have been a bit harsh.

I'll just say that I don't think it's a very good album. They have done better.
