When I was at Uni the geek club had a website counter in the old .gif style.. so a fellow wrote a bash script to download the counter .gif to /dev/null in an endless loop. That counter moved about as fast as this one seemed to have 
The funny part was the apache logs on the geek club's server managed to fill all available space on the machine in about 24 hours and it brought the site down altogether.
