That should be a bit more user-friendly. If you don't know how to set up an IRC client and join, I'll get someone to post instructions later. I'm too lazy for it myself. =)

on the forum index lala, at the bottom, all the way below the list of people currently visiting, is a link for a java chat, and it shows how many people are in it.

I stick my head in from time to time when i log on, and say something to myself, then leave.
