Who was the OG spelling nazi?

I remember someone starting endless flame wars over spelling, but can't recall who it was. I'm thinking Winnow?

The board's long gone now to find out for sure :(

Aranuil was here for a while but Aab is talking about on the OG boards years ago...

Now for a bonus point remind me which parts of my epic anyone in OG actually helped with.

Unless you're using, "thx epic" as the official OG slogan, it doesn't apply to me as I didn't even start my epic until after I left.

Hahaha... thx epic ah that brings back memories and just might be the official OG slogan. I don't remember Arch being one of those guys though...

There was always what gaybutard did to Farstorm/PD back before the merge.

He let us get our first Corinav kill, took a flag, dropped guildtag, gated and was in Fiends inside like 5 minutes.

Came back after an extended absense, got epic and left IIRC.

I can't say much I guess, pretty much quit the game about a month or two after getting mine. Right after WTF Moogy episode #999.

Was that the one where he called some paladin a bitch and caused mass deguildings?

No i think it was the one where he awarded our first ToV robe to his alt instead of a long time guild wizard and when a cleric officer called him out he told him to deal with it. Cleric deguilded and about 5 officers including me left the same/next day. A new guild was born the next day.

Are you sure it was a ToV robe? Because the incident I remember involved him awarding himself a PoF robe when he already had the robe that cazic dropped, Crimson robe of adeline or some such shit. I remember writing an email to every officer and dropping guild the next day.

Xyun, it was before the raid feature was out. We were raiding WToV zone out and using a chat channel to call out assists etc. When a silk robe dropped, it was stealth looted and only Moogy and his group of officers (KS group!) knew about it. They promptly left mid raid, for the better.

Posted: April 2, 2006, 10:34 pm
by Marbus
Which of course every member of that group was already in full ToV, far be it from them to help those who haddn't gotten all the good loot yet regardless of what the GL did or didn't do. Those people left for, heh, "the better" for them at least as everyone else was struggling to get their stuff.

I don't see that as higher principles, I see that as greed. If 50 people help you get your shit and they are depending on you to have a viable RAID and you leave because you "disagree" in principle with something the GL did before the officers and lead council can even investigate that doesn't make you a better person morally, that makes you seem like an asshole who left your guildmates high and dry so that you could take your prime loot and get even better shit while they continued to suffer.

I didn't want to bring all this back up... it's been a long time but those people that left screwed a large group of people over who had worked hard to get them their shit.

Did Moogy possibly screw over "some diserving long time OG mage"? Who knows, from what those in the group said, yes he did. Well shit guys that sucks, especially since he as the GL. But you know what, if he screwed over 1 person you screwed over 40-50 more than he did.

The fact that these people wouldn't talk to the OG officers and wouldn't even give me a chance to try and get the GL tag, not saying I could have for sure or not, before forming their own group to partner with others for bigger and better things shows where their loyality lay. Not with those who helped them, but with themselves. Some would say "it's only a game, get over it - we are all out to win" sure... that's fine but don't act like something someone else did that wasn't on the moral up and up actually bothered you. Just be honest and move on.

Marb

PS - As I said though... that was a long time ago, in another game, another world. I personally do no hold grudges and try to be a realist whevever possible. Most in OG could take or leave Moogy but what was important was their friends and those who depended on them... that is point. I listened to a LOT of people who were hurt by those who left because it pretty much ended OGs ability to do ToV as those people were the people first dressed out...

Sure glad I was gone by then. Thk epic?

You know.. OG drama was grand. But I think you (Marbus) are a bit off base when it comes to "friends and those who depended on them." When it comes down to it EverQuest (or WoW.. Doesn't matter) is a game. Something people should enjoy doing. You have to do what you enjoy doing and not something you hate every minute you're doing it. If someone is a true 'friend' they would understand that and not jump all over someone for choosing to move on. I never got this who "oh you're now in another guild I don't think I should talk to you anymore" thing.

(Hi Etain!)

I must have been long gone by the time this robe drama came about: I don't even remeber it. I certainly do recognize all of the markings, though: seems like there were many nights like that in OG.

I'd like to thank you guys for reminding me about some of the stuff I used to love and hate about EQ. I loved working hard on raids, especially helping others with quests, but I hated that the game was such a ball buster in regards to rarity of drops. It can only bring out the worst in people - and so many times it did.

Anyway, regarding the OP, I dont remember who the spelling nazi was -I just hope it wasnt me! Though I do try to do a good job with my own posts in the spelling department, and though extremely poor spelling can drive me nuts (stuff that makes a post hard to read/understand), I dont think I made a habbit of calling out people on spelling mistakes - certainly not to the degree to earn such a moniker.

EDIT:
(Hi Etain!)
I would just like to point out that if it weren't for Etain, I would have never been part of the Veeshan family. We were in the same Quake Rocket Arena team together, along with Sriek Zen and the original Elidain (and maybe some others that were on Veeshan). Anyway, they finally got me to play EQ (after a few months, heh) and now look at me: still posting on theads regarding guilds that are no more, from a server that is no more. Go figure!

Aslanna I pretty sure I talked to you after you left, as I did with Winnow, Thalowin and almost everyone else. Hell if anyone was guilty of "thx epic" it was Oter and I kept in touch with him a bunch and talk to his ex-wife almost daily.

Your post is 100% correct if you are not concerned with the greater good of guild. If the idea of a guild is to have fun as long as I'm getting loot then sure that holds. It's funny how people quit having fun as soon as they have a lot of good crap... My personal opinion is that is not who you are Aslanna and your departure was for various reasons which were spelled out to me years ago on the originally IGN Vault.

The stuff I'm talking about in my post is that a number of people in full ToV armor, pretty much the 2 top groups in OG, left almost immediatly after getting their armor because they said Moogy treated someone unfair... regardless of all other OG drama and where I fall or fell on it I call bullshit on that. If those people TRULY cared about the guild and someone being "fair" then they wouldn't have left. Do you see my point? Their arguement to leave was that Moogy was greedy but yet they did something far worse to those who helped them. When Aslanna or a few other people left at a time it was different... sure tempers flaired for a week or sometimes not at all... but the leaving of those top two full ToV groups pretty much ended OGs raiding and kept everyone else from getting their armor.

Me personally I was very tired of the drama and was about to head out myself but I wasn't the person people were depending ot be able to raid either. I was the person listening to everyone bitch and trying to do the "right thing." Hell look at Voronwe, he also gave it his best and stuck it out for the good fight and eventually had to move on as well... perhaps it was hopeless... who knows but I can tell you there were a lot of good strong relationships made there. People who went to other guilds stayed close because that is where they began and others just reformed with friends somewhere else.

Getting Joseph to sleep just now I was thinking before I came in and read this response. On the original message I need to say (and I'll probably edit it this way in a minute)... acting like assholes rather than asshole. It is / was just a game. Aslanna is right, people should to what and play what they want to have fun... I agree with that. All I'm saying is that if you do believe that then do it, don't make up some moral high ground against someone else just so that you can get what you want and still feel good about it.

oh so there were two separate incidents involving Elex/Moogy and a robe... lol. What happened was inevitable. When followers realize that their leader is inadequate and corrupt they tend to leave. There really is no betrayal. I can understand why some people may feel betrayed, but the blame lies with the leader, not with those who make the decision to stop following him.

I hafta disagree Marb... what motivation was there for the top 2 'full-tov' groups to continue raiding for and allowing moogy to award everything to either his alts or recently-tagged old-timers?

you guys thought Xanupox was bad... cmon!! Moogy was the king shitdick!

Posted: April 3, 2006, 10:45 am
by Nilaman
Fash, I believe you were one of those recently tagged old-timers.

I was the only CoV mage, so I spent a lot of time watching the stupidity. Then came Ianieng.. and he left. Then Morteus and Rodmann came well after the incident occured.

I see where Marb is comming from (also a new old-timer who got loot!) with people leaving to form VI. Losing our best geared people did cripple the guild and we did have to invite asshats like blankey into the guild to make up for what was lost.

However, I will forever regret not leaving when I was asked to. I had a lot of fun in OG, but the only thing I did was check for Trak, ToV named dragons (that we could never manage to kill), and CoH. I didn't want to leave OG at the time because I thought it would completely kill the guild to have no CoV mages, and I liked most of the people who were still in OG.

If I was a little wiser at the time, I would have left and hoped OG died for the best.

Nilman I think I agree with you 100% Many of us should have left but like you wanted to stick it out for others. Perhaps more of us should have given up much earlier. Once I wasn't doing the awards anymore I think things got considerably worse but I had to take an extended time away because my marriage was more important than the game, heh I know no one would fault me for that. However during my time away I know a lot of questionable things happened that I will never be able to verify.

Xyun also has a good point. Many times I thought I could make up the difference or as I said earlier, make things right. That in retrospect was a pipe dream and I should have probably joined Xyun or Gak long before this incident occured. :D As I probably had the crappiest gear of any officer I certantly would have ever been called greedy...

Um... when I was still the only CoV mage etc we did fear once and CRoA dropped and I asked for it but then decided to pass because I had Apothic and there were more needy people with shit robes. Then I was awarded the Grotesque Girdle without asking for it or even knowing it dropped.

The next day I found trak up and CoHed us down to him and got his mana robe! That's the only other robe I got from OG. Apothic + Mana Robe!

The whole reason I left (Aslanna and Zeep right after) is that OG, as fun as it was,

1) had Moogy as a leader who wasn't meant to be a leader and

2) OG was a social guild and could never get enough people focused to succeed. I was lapping members in level with my alt character.

About the time the CT bound trio left, Gaklek was rising through the ranks of OG. He had true ambition and desire to advance into the unknown. I was doing Necropolis with him long before most. The story would have been different for OG if Gaklek would have been made GL at that point. As it happened, he just left as well due to the same reasons.

Posted: April 3, 2006, 5:59 pm
by Marbus
Possibly true in regards to Gak Win but I don't think he wanted or was ready for GL at that point. I think actually it wouldn't have mattered if he (Gaklek was the first person moved to the Governing counil a couple of weeks before he left), Vor, I or Etain had the GL tag it would have been more ruled as initially intended... when we formed OG from OO and CG the idea was to not have 1 strong ruler but to share the responsibilities. Moogy just had the tag because he was always online. It worked that way for a while...

I got along with Moogy but we too had our differences. Whether he was a good GL or not at one point, a time came where people lost trust in him. Once that is gone, wheither diserving of it's loss or not, it's time to move on really... but that didn't happen. Perhaps I or one of the outher council members should have pressed the issue or moved on then... who knows... we could debate the ideas forever.

Truth is that OG was a great guild with TONS of great people who were part of it at one point or another and added to it's success and friendship. Many other guilds were formed from those relationships, some being the best guilds on the server. For that, the poeple I got a chance to play with and the fun I had, I thank everyone who was a part. It was a lot of fun while it lasted and I still enjoy debating innane issues to this very day with most of you :)

Cheers!

OG got a lot done for a while, i think due to the fact that there were just assloads of druids and wizards in the guild. Easy to mobhilize when every exp group has a taxi.

I joined OG pretty late in its life (and was a pretty quit member doubt many remember me), was there for ToV until I quit. I remember things looking really good for a while and having tons of fun with Lisander and Samila and those people. For me it kinda fell apart when they left.

As for Moogy he was a pretty poor leader, but for some reason (maybe cause I was a Paladin?) he used to award me more than my fair share of loot, so I never had any reasons to complain. But he did award his alts way too much loot and got mad for the wrong reasons.

But as someone said it was a casual guild, so it was always losing good people that wanted to go hard core.

Funny reading all this!

I remember killing myself to keep people happy in the guild and just as things were going great he'd lob a moogy bomb and piss off a bunch of folks.

I will say that my OG memories are etched deeper in my EQ memory than anything else I did while playing. .... minus the Sleeper thing perhaps.

Yes Elex tried to loot a Carmine Robe (or did) when it dropped and he was wearing a Crimson Robe of the Alendine. Much nonsense ensued.

Same day maybe, Valorium Greaves dropped, he wanted them on his paladin, threated to deguild Marbus because officers had awarded it to him. Elex later claims it was his son driving him making these threats (sure...)

Yeah this pretty much summarizes my experience in terms of my capacity as 'officer'.

it summarizes the guild's progress as a whole as well

- Obsidian Overlords formed as a split off from Celestial Tomb (reprising their pre-CT embodiment i think) pre-Kunark. Moogy was the leader. For some reason most of the people who refounded OO left and went back to CT right before Kunark.

- OO was basically 10 people, merged with Crimson Guard, patching several bits of strife between persons w/ common history in both guilds

- Moogy tries to deguild Selina/Fontari because HE WON A RANDOM for an Arbiter's Combine Greatsword, persons like myself and Marb talk him down (RED FLAG ANYONE?!?! June of Kunark release).

- Due to some bullshit, loose more high quality (Adex, Gaklek, Zeep, Winnow, Aslanna, etc) others) talent (and some no-quality talent :p )mid-velious, retool

- early Luclin, due to more bullshit lose Lisandre, Samila, i dont know who else, but it was pretty much like how many of your top people are you willing to lose for the same reason?

- not sure what happened after that cause i hit eject about a year too late, but hey that's life.

I look back on it as a valuable learning experience in that i know that i let my ambition to succeed in the game blind me to some really glaring 'management issues' that doomed that guild to failure. Basically, if we had managed the guild properly it would have been one of the best on the server - the failures werent for a lack of quality members.

As i like to remember it though, i think the cool thing is that in spite of all the nonsense, a bunch of us landed in the same place again, and it was a lot of fun.
