Aftermarket Car Navigation... resources? reviews?

Ok, here is the situation. Im about to pull the trigger on the new Alpine Blackbird standalone navi. But a few things concern me.
First off, traffic updating and rerouting are extremely important to me. I drive between 100-300 miles in the DC metro area daily. I have no idea how these features work (I know most of them are XM subscription based). But how do they update? and notify?
Second, is there a better nav product out there than Alpine's software? Garmin, Magellan, ect?....
Since Ive never had nav, and I drive OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS, Im sure Ill be pretty damn happy with whatever I have. But I want to make sure Ive done all my research before just buying something.
Anyone seen any sites/blogs dedicated to reviewing features? Im pretty sure understanding how the features work, then evaluating which ones I need is my first step.
