Lyric game!
Posted: March 6, 2006, 3:54 pm
by Truant
Okay, gonna try this out.
Here's how it works:
I post a bit of lyrics. You guess the song and artist (many songs have multiple versions, any are acceptable I guess, if you know multiple, even better). The person who guesses correctly then gets to post a bit of lyrics. Repeat! (If you can't find the artist, that's okay...but try! this is educational!)
There are no rules as far as genre. You can use lyrics from any style of music, try not to turn it into a thrashing of other people's musical tastes. Failure to post lyrics after a correct guess is punishable by execution. (When this happens, the last person to post lyrics will then post again with new lyrics and hopefully the chain continues). If there are several guesses, and noone is really sure if they are right...the poster of the lyrics should identify the correct guess so that the chain can continue.
Enough horseshit explanations, on with the game!
This should be a fairly easy one, to help get things going.
Jesus just left Chicago and he's bound for New Orleans.
Well now, Jesus just left Chicago and he's bound for New Orleans.
Yeah, yeah.
Workin' from one end to the other and all points in between.

ZZ Top "Jesus left Chicago"
:edit:
Do you wait for confirmation of your guess to post further lyrics or just assume that you are right and post them?

Nah, go ahead...only if you really don't know if your guess is right, ie. a wild stab in the dark at it, would you need to wait for any type of confirmation. So go ahead with your lyrics!

And Nightcrawler too
Waiting there for me.
Yes I do, I do.
I've got posters on the wall,
My favorite rock group, KISS.
I've got Ace Frehley.
I've got Peter Criss
Waiting there for me.
Yes I do, I do

Never would have figured you for a fan of his music...
Neil Young : Goin' Back
Now it's time to take this game to the expert level. Going to give you a whole verse on this one.
Sometimes I ask myself why even bother
When it goes in one ear and right out the other
Out on a limb out on the edge no matter what they say
The pleasure of pain day after day,
day after day

Phish - You Enjoy Myself
As the morning light stretched in across my bed
I thought of you, mmm hmm hmmmm
Remembering your laughing eyes and all we said
I love you too, mmm hmm hmmmm
And as all my thoughts of you pass 'fore my face a thousand times
The way you race my heart, I cannot say it all...in lines
Hrmmmmm no one?...Another song by the same writer...a bit more famous one, though his recording isn't that famous.
He danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs
throughout the south
He spoke through tears of 15 years how his dog and him
traveled about
The dog up and died, he up and died
And after 20 years he still grieves

Hungry Sally - Tito and Tarantula for mr. Boog.
and >< to mr. cadalano. I should have had that, I have dishonored my family.
Well I woke up Sunday morning
with no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast
wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert
then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes
and found my cleanest dirty shirt
and I shaved my face and combed my hair
and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day
Should be an easy one.

Mr. Cash - Sunday Morning Coming Down
Adding lyrics in a second... just wanted to call dibs.
edit: ok, I'm creating my own version of the game and adding lyrics from whatever song is currently playing on my player so this may be quite easy (I tend to listen on complete random unless I'm in the mood for anything specific).

I had forgotten that Johnny Cash had recorded it.
Kris Kristofferson wrote it (and recorded it).
Erasure - Ship of Fools. (ERASURE?!)
The monkey sat on a pile of stone
And stared at the broken bone in his hand
Strains of a Viennese quartet rang out across the land
And the monkey looked up at the stars
And he thought to himself
Memory is a stranger
History is for fools
And he cleaned his hands in a pool of holy writing
Turned his back on the garden and set out for the nearest town
Hold on hold on soldier
When you add it all up
The tears and the marrowbone
There's an ounce of gold
And an ounce of pride in each ledger
And the Germans killed the Jews
And the Jews killed the Arabs
And the Arabs killed the hostages
And that is the news
And is it any wonder that the monkey's confused
He said Mama, the President's a fool
Why do I have to keep reading these technical manuals
And the joint chiefs of staff
And the brokers on Wall Street said
Don't make us laugh, you're a smart kid
Time is linear
Memory is a stranger
History is for fools
Man is a tool in the hands
Of the great God Almighty
And they gave him command of a nuclear submarine
And sent him back in search of the Garden of Eden
A little tougher. Fucking amazing album that noone knows about, but should. (you'll understand when you realize who it is)
I wonder if any of you are trying out any new songs you encounter here? There's some really good ones.
