Everyone and their mom has been trying to get me on myspace... no fucking way.

From a interface designer standpoint it's the poorest excuse for it. Back in college, one assignment I had was to show 5 examples of the shittiest pages I can found... almost the whole class showed myspace pages.

I thought it was hilarious recently when Tom disabled html commenting when he found out people were embedding code that loaded large tables, sound, and url redirection into people's pages who were stupid enough to add anonymous people to their friends list.

It's great for networking don't get me wrong, but I see no point in having one since I have my own host, domain, and do my site myself.

I hated myspace when I first heard about it and logged on over a year ago. However, now I love it!!!

Honestly, Demitri Martin (from the Daily Show) said it best... "the bad news is that myspace is filled with sexual predators, the good news is that it's also filled with sexual prey".

lmao.

Also, having recently moved to a different state, it provides a nice medium to keep in touch with friends and x's without having to call.

You brag about how much you've put into your page, and yet you use a shitty background picture so people can barely read anything? The green text is okay but good luck reading anything on the left side.

Myspace is still a horrible website, and regardless of your claim, I can admit that I am not and never will be on it. Sure, the site may have some beneficial qualities - it's a profile, like EQ's magelo, where you can brag about how cool you are, and somehow get an idea that you are Mr. Popular on the internet.

That being said, some people use the site legitimately - again like EQ's Magelo, people can "inspect" you, find out if you're a total freak they would never want to meet (but still "friend" you nonetheless!). Some people just use it because a few friends do - and that's fine. I've heard plenty of stories of people finding others that they haven't spoken to since high school, etc. That's great, more power to you.

Still, there is that group of users all over myspace that are just there to whore friend status and flaunt their 13 year old body to 45 year old perverts. HEY U SEEM COOL FRIENDS 4 EVER OK? LOL. HI2U CHECK OUT MY BAND OUR BANDS CAN BE FRIENDS KEWL DOOD.

Personally, I see no reason to have a self promoting website where I can tally "friends" (aka random online people I don't know) that stumble upon my page.

It's not often that I totally agree with Stragi, but in this case I'm going to have to.

Before I go on, I'm going to stress that if you enjoy your time on Myspace (I have plenty of friends that do), I think that's fantastic and you should keep on keeping on with your time there. I also want to stress that I'm not picking on Funkmasterr specifically...

That said, Stragi and Funkmasterr together touched on something that I feel needs further discussion.

Lets talk about the acronym CSS. The second letter in CSS stands for 'style', but for myspace sites at large the acronym should be shortened to CS because there is no fucking style. It's just a busy fucking mess where people try and slam is as many 'cool' pictures, colors, and music as possible with absolutely zero thought to readability or accessibility.

The third letter in CSS stands for 'Sheets'. Style sheets are idiotic for a single page web site. They were designed for readability, accessibility and a consistent look on sites with potentially hundreds of unique pages. For a single paged site who really cares.

Myspace sites by and large are some of the worst looking webpages on the Internet. The fact that they allow for the use of CSS is hilariously silly.

I'd like to add that Stragi's avatar is 'bitchin'.

CSS is just a markup language.. it doesnt refer to the actual file that is separated from the document. Its vastly useful in single pages also.. probably overkill for a myspage page, though.

I failed to see the point of changing the layout of the basic MySpace page. I use it to post random videos I come across for other friends to look at instead of me dropping links on AIM. Also I've used it to keep in touch with family that lives in another state. In all the times I've used it, I just don't get why people make it so god damn unreadable with stupid color coordinations and background pictures, as previous stated by somebody else.

Much like cadalano.com, I used that site for hosting files, not promoting how cool I am. The only reason I don't use it now is because I have guild site web hosting (free!). And yes, I regretting naming it after myself, but I really had no other ideas.

And to clear up any confusion, I'm rell (this name is staying) and Stragi is currently Lincoln Lolgs - his is the only one changing rapidly.

Once there is a background on one of those pages, it is basically worthless--mainly due to load time, then due to the simple fact that background images are pretty worthless for any type of readable content.

That said, I like to know when a favorite band will be in town and to hear from peeps that I normally don't hear from. So it has some use to me.

FFs though people, please stop adding more than perhaps a song (which can be stopped) and a few photos! :P And wtf with all the sparkly images? Yeah, I guess the teenybopper shit gets old and fast--but that is why you can delete people as well. ;)

Heh... sorry. With the name change and avatar change, I got confused (not hard to do).

Chid, at least I can read yours!

Cane, I'm not saying it doesn't have good uses! I think the intent of myspace is excellent...

I just think the majority of people are vapid drones that have new or noteworthy to say, and myspace clearly reflects that. Of course this opinion could be due to the fact that every time I'm linked to a myspace site it's because someone found one that was ridiculous.

All that said, I'm a grown man who shaves his legs so take my opinion for what it's worth. ;)

I think you're missing part of it. Myspace may not have a deep hierarchy of pages per user site, which style sheets can definitely be useful for in keeping a consistent 'style' throughout a site with many different pages of content. The 'cascading' part of CSS is where it benefits Myspace, allowing for many shallow sites (like 65 or 70 million in this case) to override the root 'style' elements and allow for different looks without having access to the html or server-side code.

I'd say it's a legitimate use of CSS, though I'll agree that 99% of the people out there don't have a very keen eye for design and just end up making it look like shit. But at least they might be learning something!

Yeah, the background image was temporary, because the picture I want to use is not on my computer yet. And I was in no way trying to brag, nor do I use myspace to meet people I don't know, I know everyone I have on my friends list from school/work/a few from wow, etc..

I am however, not saying by any means that's how the majority of myspace people use the site.

It's just fairly easy for me to use without going and finishing my degree in programming, so its fun to mess with. Although I can't seem to get the code for changing my cursor to work. And I want to know how to get a damn stand alone music/video player on my page that will allow me to have several different songs.

Why is it that some people are so devoid of a sense of humor? Naturally, I'm referring to Funkmasterr's latest assertions. To get immediately to the point, Funkmasterr extricates himself from difficulty by intrigue, by chicanery, by dissimulation, by trimming, by an untruth, by an injustice. One may very well question whether it is sinful and more than grotesque to believe that the Universe belongs to him by right. Still, most people will eventually be convinced that on the issue of adversarialism, he is wrong again. Sure, you'd think Funkmasterr would see how dissolute and slimy he appears. But it's not the boogeyman that our children need to worry about. It's Funkmasterr. Not only is Funkmasterr more recalcitrant and more capricious than any envisaged boogeyman or bugbear, but it strikes me as amusing that Funkmasterr complains about people who do nothing but complain. Well, news flash! He does nothing but complain. In closing, I consider this letter to be required reading for everyone who still cares that Funkmasterr's ethics have proven to be a complete disaster in both theory and practice. Unfortunately, with our nation's media being as controlled as it is, there's no way that this letter will be widely publicized. Therefore, I'm counting on you to pass on this letter to all of your e-mail contacts. Thank you.

Congratulations to Funkmasterr for saying that mediocrity and normalcy are ideal virtues. That decidedly wins the prize for being the most ruthless and stroppy thing I've ever heard. In the text that follows, I won't bother discussing the flaws in his logic, because he undeniably doesn't use any logic. It may seem obvious, but from secret-handshake societies meeting at "the usual place" to back-door admissions committees, his co-conspirators have always found a way to influence the attitudes of dominant culture towards any environment or activity that is predominantly cheeky. In summary, it is my prayer that people everywhere will join me in my quest to stick to the facts and offer only those arguments that can be supported by those facts.
