I've got to admit, it was a fun few weeks!
Guild Wars and COH/CoV are great eye candy and games to play for short periods of time here and there. Guild Wars gets the nod for having no monthly fees. Second Life also has a great payment model where you can use a premium 9.95/mnth account for when you're active in the game and cut back to free without losing any of your things besides land. (can place any buildings into inventory so you wouldn't lose them)
I think it only benefits developers of MMORPGs to provide some sort of limited free model for their games to allow ex players to recapture their interest and reactivate later to access the majority of zones/levels etc. Leave Tranquility and PoK open in EQ for example.
