Funny, I never lived on campus for college. But I did go down to my girlfriends college a lot, and I made sure to laugh at the idiots that would do the stupidest shit in the world to "belong". Rushing is ridiculous, frats and sororities are a joke.

Its not so much to belong always. Frats will get you laid more. Frats will ensure that there is always some crazy ass party going on. But the biggest thing is, frats will get you better jobs. They have connections. I'm not in one though...I've thought about rushing next year, but eh, I dunno, I dont need the help to get a job. Co-op will do that for me.

Why is joining a frat ridiculous? The difference, as a whole, is living with a bunch of guys instead of living with one guy. The price is the same (less, in my case), the friendships are what you make of them, and the experience is whatever you choose to do.

my frat, or at least my chapter never had any at least bad "hazing"...well i guess there were a couple of things but they were almost always fun, no pig fucking or downing 2 handles in 2 hours here...but yeah, there are a lot of shitty frats that either let anyone in, or do have some nasty hazing

What, pray tell, would this 'business' be? I am curious. In a corporate situation, I have never seen a secret handshake. Usually, it is a good helping of bullshit that carves the path. That, and a solid acumen of what is expected from upper management.

Not really a bash on whether a kid joins a social group or not...more of a dissection of what is real and what is fantasy. There is a difference between a successful person who was in a frat and a successful person who is successful because of having been in a frat.

I am sure the NASD or NYSE has a ton of greek folks, but that greek identity generally is prevalent only when the NYSE interns are having their first drunken party somehwere near Chelsea at a bar that I forgot the name of.

Until then, try not to concentrate too much on 'connections'. If you do land a job in 'the business', do not expect to last long unless you know what the fuck you are talking about.

Unless you're an Ivy Leaguer. Back in my stint in teh corporate world, I noticed that a lot of people who were the most fucking clueless came from these places. Carly Fiorina jumps to mind. Graduated from Stanford and MIT, but actually believed that the 500% growth rate the IT market experienced in the 90's was sustainable indefinitely.
