Sequels that Are Better than the Originals

Movie Sequels That Are As Good As, Or Better Than, the Originals:
1. Superman II (best movie ever!)
2. The Godfather, Pt. 2
3. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
4. Aliens
5. Terminator 2 (debatable if it's better than 1, but it's at least as good)
...any others I'm forgetting?
Yeah...

Ishtar II
And I only say that because if they ever make a sequel, there's no way in hell it could be as bad as the original, cuz it is the suck!

You need to let up on the sauce. T1 >>>>>>>>>>> T2.

What the fuck ever. Batman 1 was the best Batman ever. There isn't even a comparison.

Agreed. Batman Returns in no way even approaches the glory that is Batman.
And I stand by my judgment of T2 vis a vis Terminator. T2 held its own because of the special effects and the T-1000. T1 will always rock because of the classic "Are you Sarah Connor?" scene.

Have you seen the unedited version of Evil Dead 1? If not, I suggest you watch it, then come back and say that Army of Darkness was better

I have it - if you're thinking of the version that came out on the double dvd special collection with ED I and II. I am still far more entertained by AoD, shrug.

Fair enough, but I've never seen the DVD version. It was a tape I have of the original version of ED1.

Evil Dead was way better! However, ED2 and AoD had better one-liners

The thing about Alien and Aliens is that they were two totally different types of movies. So to say one was better than the other is a bit off kilter because one was supposed to be a psychological horror movie and the other was an action blow you up movie. So I feel its a bit hard to compare the two.

I was maybe 12 years old? when I first saw Aliens.
That was the only movie that I can remember to ever get me nervous watching it. Those opening battle scenes grabbed you from the beginning and didn't let you relax until the end.
Its the only movie that I remember being "caught up".
I don't know if it was partly due to my age at the time or what, but that experience is burned into my memory like a tramatic experience.
so yes, Aliens was a sequel that was better then the original.

That's the beauty of Aliens. It went with the storyline but was completely fresh from the original...exactly why it gets high marks from most people rating sequels here. Aliens 2 on a spaceship would have been teh suck.
Game over man...game over!

This is debatable depending upon how you look at the series but..
Star Wars 4/5/6 > 1/2
Sequels? In the story, yes.
Mr.Lucas - your 15 minutes are up. My poo is more entertaining than your new movies.

My favorite of the Batman Series was Batman Forever(with Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey).
The one with Clooney/Arnie was just bad.

For my money Batman 2 > Batman 1. There were no other Batman films made. None ya hear!?!?!?!?

Gotta disagree on Blade, Kilorn.
2nd had better effects, but a suck-ass storyline.
And there was only one Batman, although I would have titled it The Joker.
**EDIT** Misspelled Blade. Used the spelling from a certain rogue character I know on Veeshan.

I'll agree the story on Blade 2 is not as strong as Blade 1, but Del Toro's direction was vastly better and the characterization of Blade was stronger and more entertaining. Technically, fight scenes, effects, direction...it is a better movie, imho

I also agree that T2 was better than T1.
i think "Alien" is a better movie than "Aliens", but i thought "Aliens" was really good for a sequal, and very entertaining. Not that scary though. "Alien" was scary as hell.
Empire Strikes Back is an obvious choice.
I also agree about Wrath of Khan, though it is cheesy, but Star Trek I sucked, so...
Road Warrior was definitely better than Mad Max.

It's a toss up on Blade 2, I would give it to Blade 1 though. I liked the direction in both, but the photography in part one was excellent. A lot of Blade 2 was computers, unlike part 1.
