how many of you, especially the young people, thought about all the legal crap that comes after you die?
When you're 20 or 30 and in good health the thought that you might not be alive tomorrow probably doesn't even enter your mind. I guess that's OK, let the family worry about it all. That is until YOU are the family and have people depending on you.

How many of you have living wills, power of attorneys, testaments, lot at a cementary? If and when you are not here tomorrow what's gonna happen to your stuff, if you even care.

I plan to be cremated, the rest I don't really care about, I especially don't care about where they stick my ashes in the ground, I will be long gone by that time.

I supposed if i really want to be entombed i better save up myself to make sure i get a nice above ground tomb...


Course after I'm dead it really aint gonna bother me much.

hehe something above ground would be nice, not that it will help me much, but I'm from Europe, elaborate granite or stone tombs, often a family ones are just tradition. As oposed to a small nothing with your name on it, flat enough so the lawn mower can ride right over you


I remember getting something in the mail from some random cementary offering a nice place to rest, peace and quiet etc. I was 22 or so and had a good laugh reading that. Back then I felt invincible.

Funny you should make this the day I'm registering my brothers death. It's fucking mental.

After I get married in July, we are planning on making our wills. Currently, the only thing my familly and friends know is that I want to be cremated, and thats the only thing (which scares me)

I went through all of that with my wife's sister when she passed away. There's so much more involved than you can even imagine. It took almost a year and a half to get everything resolved.

Planning is great advice.

My father just passed 10 days ago. He had lived with us for the past 6 years. We didn’t do any type of planning, so now we are hit with all the funeral expense etc. He had no will, money, burial insurance or life insurance.

So this has been a serious eye opener for me. I have always had life insurance on both the wife and I. Now we are making wills, naming God parents for our 3 children etc.

I've got a will for material things. As far as the rest, cremate me and dump me in the nearest body of salt water. I was going to specify a coffee can but restrained myself

Beyond that, no marker, no nothing.

Yeah I have had a few succession planning classes. So many people go without having any form of trusts, wills, nothing. It ends up costing the family money, on top of making them sad. Best thing to do, is to try for a good life insurance policy (especially if you own a business), to cover those death taxes, and the burial, that sort of thing. Put the rest of your money into managable trusts, that will transfer when you die.

If you do it right, you can have a complete transfer of all wealth without ever having to pay a dime to the government.

Now, as for me, being 21, I have a will. It is short and to the point at the moment. Car -> girlfriend, bills -> parents. I also have a trust which I have refused myself from touching until im 35. The reason for this is, most kids my age, when they get that kind of money, will go and spend all of it in less than a year. My friend Steve's parents died three years ago. He got 2.8million. It's all gone already. So, instead of spending all of mine (I know I will), I had it put back into a trust and will make a good amount of interest over the next 14 years.

By the way - this trust is not from parents, or relatives deaths. It is just something my parents had been putting together for me before I was 18.

we are really slackers. we dont have signed copies of our will, durable powers of attourney, or living wills.

This is one thing my financial planner had me get on a couple years back, for the reasons you guys have mentioned. Our death/estate/inheritance tax situation is a little different than it is in the US but the other reasons (i.e. reduction of financial impact and ease of PITA when people are grieving, etc) are the same. One thing I haven't done is to make a living will, which I really should but I find numerous ways to procrastinate with it.

One thing I found kind of interesting in a wierd way was the whole cremation/burial issue. Both of my grandfathers died within about 6 mos of each other back in the early 80s. One was buried in a church cemetary, one was cremated with his ashes to be scattered where my grandmother felt was most appropriate. At the time some of my relatives were scandalized that he was cremated rather than buried and they'd have no grave site to visit. Now, its 20 years later and I can say that I have not been back to my paternal grandfather's grave. My maternal grandmother passed away last fall and she was cremated and my mother and uncle took her ashes to scatter where her husband's were. I guess, when I think of "disposal of the body" I like the thought of the ashes scattered someplace meaningful to me, and possibly mingling with someone I love, more than just taking up space in a place no one will visit, with no significance to my loved ones except that my body is there.

My money goes to my mom and then my brother in that order. My stuff... eh, whatever. Whoever wants it can have it.

What I want from you, fellow internet community members, is a thread in my honor. I want my friends to talk about how much they'll miss me, and I want the people who aren't my friends to say "good riddance!" At the end, I hope it will degenerate into a 20+ page flame thread. If the manner of my death is in some way contrary to the things I said here over the years, call me out on it like I deserve. Bottom line, have fun, remember me or forget me in the manner of your choosing. I'm not going to care much, cause I'll be dead.

Will, living will and plot have long been taken care of. I lost my "I'm immortal" attitude the first time I was in the sand.

Its a damned mess to deal with. Both my sister and father-in-law died in the past 6 months.

I have an arrangement with my room mate that whoever outlives the other will clean all the pr0n off their computer before giving it back to their parents.
