...a somewhat decent 5.1 system (with or without DVD) for around $300.

Here is the TV:

Samsung 30" 16:9 tube, HDTV tuner, HDMI input, etc...looks far better than most similar models. I had orignally wanted a 34", but the price margins are much slimmer for tubes than plasma/lcd/etc(I bought direct from a vendor via my brother).

The picture is FUCKING GREAT...looks like a plasma from the front, and it is very slim for a tube.

Damn, this TV looks GREAT! I cannot wait to get some surround sound going. I know that Best Buy has a Sony 5.1 for around $190, and it has great reviews for such a low cost system... I can get decent prices on lower end Harmon Kardon(sp), but I just want a decent sound system for my apt for a few years until I can buy a house.

I saved over $200 on the TV(retail $899-999, bought for $693), which is cool, but still want to keep overall cost down. any ideas?

Seems the Samsung remote is not compatible with my Onkyo DVD player....any ideas for a solid yet low cost Universal Remote?

Also, hotdamn, Gladiator SE looks fucking FANTASTIC!!! omgomgomg...

PS: this is the first TV I have ever bought--usually, I would just take hand-me-downs in the 19-21" range of TV....hehehe, this things looks HUGE to me!! Good fucking shit. weeeeeee

I hear you can watch football and see the receiver before the pass is completed!

Yamaha YHT-160
JVC TH-M505
Kenwood HTB-307
Onkyo HT-S580

Any of those above seem to be decent starter HTIB's in the 250-300 range. If your top price is 300 most of those will leave you a couple of bucks for extra cables.

Yamaha Receivers are known for their Cinema DSP in that price range. They should be on your short list if it's going to be used for Home Theater primarily.

Thanks guys! With so many choices in the cheap range, it is hard to seperate the weed from the chaff.

I have been very happy with my fairly reasonably priced Yamaha. Don't have the product number right now (it is in the apartment in the US) but if you find a decent Yamaha I would suggest that.
