to be able to get a cable tv hook up to your computer using like two video cards and two monitors so you can watch tv on one and play on the other?

You don't need two video cards. Just get something like an ATI All-In-Wonder or something. Then get an dvi-to-rgb adapter and you can hook two monitors up to that video card. From there, you can just make your settings so that the screen spans two monitors.

Or the easier solution is to just get a TV.

I have a small 13" color next to my monitor. Don't really need more than that. I'd hate to go through the hassel of making sure everything was configured just so and then not get the graphics I want for my games because of having to own an All in Wonder.

Hauppage makes really good TV capture cards, although you'd probably need another video card for playing games. I honestly don't know the details, but I keep hearing about these cards for making your own Linux-based PVR, and they get good reviews for what they do.

Trouble I've found w/ PVR cards is they don't play well with others, and some have interfaces that are very poorly coded (Twinhan; MFC is not a tool for building responsive systems)

There's also the constant IO for instant replay features, which while the display doesn't use much processor, it can get very pissed off about IO locks.

PVR's are a cheap way to get HD TV, but I haven't seen too many that you can watch on one screen while you game on another.
