Building a New computer for the first time ~

I have a laptop, and it's nice. But it sucks for gaming. I'm looking to build a nice desktop. My budget is 800$ give or take 200.

Does anyone have any suggestions with what to get or where to begin or some nice sites to get stuff from? Im lookin on pricewatch and newegg. but to tell you the truth i don't understand half these damn things that follow and item. so with my luck none of it would be compatable.

Better yet, anyone wanna put together a machine for me?

Ug, I haven't studied up on that price range for a full system. Newegg is a reliable internet vendor though if you are comfortable with building your own system.

I'd recommend browsing the message boards over at the Hard[OC] for suggestions in various price ranges.

System Guides... they do one every two months or so... a budget box, a god box, and a middle of the road box (whatever they call it).... Thats what I used for my last comp... I did a mix between the god and middle boxes for about $1k, and Ive been pleased for the last 1.5 years (course I dont play the latest games... but I can :))

Well some questions need to be answered before you start down that road. First question is, are you looking for a complete system or do you have anything in your old system that will xfer (ie. PC3200 Ram, Monitor, ATI9800 graphics card) or are you looking to get everything from the box to the mouse?

Hmmm... that sapphire card, it is Nvidia or ATi? You might consider a different video card if you can. Even the new ATi stuff isn't comparing well with Nvidia and that doesn't even mention the driver stability.

I've only heard bad things about Sapphire cards, which explains why they're always the cheapest.

I bought a sapphire 9800pro. It overheated for no reason. They never responded to my emails.

Dam, I wish I had seen the message earlier I could have helped you out. I put together a system recently and helped two friends get theirs as well, so it's all fresh in my mind. I even put together another system today (I wanted to upgrade to dual core, so I found an excuse hehe)

If you can cancel it, do it. By the fact that you have selected a Sapphire board, I can see you may have already gone in the wrong direction.

Most likely sooner rather than later if what folks are saying is true.

You're missing the point Clatis. It's a Sapphire, there's a reason it's cheaper.

Well there is club in town called Sapphire and the dancers there are of a higher quality than most of the places near by. But that is a whole other topic.

In my town I'd recommend the Christie's Cabaret Video Card.

the ATI guys are way hotter than the nvidia guys. ruby is kind of skanky though.
