I'm putting together a computer at the moment, but I'm scratching my head at connecting the power supply to my motherboard.

The cord for the power supply has 20 pins, but the motherboard seems to have a slot for 24. Am I boned? The manual says that's where the cord goes.

Yep! Your power supply is outdated. Return it and get one with a 24-pin connector. I highly recommend the Antec Phantom. Just carefully inspect the back of the box of what you intend to purchase, as they are always labelled with what type of connectors they have.

Make sure you have an ATX form factor box. Newer power supplies will not fit in old AT boxes.

Local store called Greenlyph. Pretty solid computer parts store. Basically just a door with a counter behind it though ;p

tell them he gave you the wrong part, and you demand the right one. If they try to charge you, tell them you will spread the word to net nerds that this store cant pick a simple PS correctly.

That is a very good way to get yourself a better power supply at no extra cost!

Is that an outdated thing or is it just the new Intel and/or AMD motherboard power pin spec issue? I think current AMD's use 24 pin rather than 20 pin...both being ATX.

Just make sure the box says "For Intel Pentium 4" and/or "For AMD Athlon64" or says "has both 20 and 24 pin output"...etc.

That's probably where you got "boned"....but they do sell adapters too...so DON'T let them give you one of those....always get the correct power supply with connector...never use adapters! they are the devil!

The ATX standard was updated in the past year or so, I think - and when they did that the power connectors went from 20 to 24 pins. I had the same problem when I upgraded a couple of weeks ago. I had planned on reusing my power supply but it only had 20 pins so I had to go buy a new one. >< I noticed that a lot of the boards at the store had 24 pin connectors now, but I didn't pay enough attention to notice if it was just the AMD ones or not.

I had this problem when I was building my new gaming rig a while back. I bought the best Antec newegg had, and it came with the 20 pin. I ordered a Coolermaster 480 watt because it specified the 24 pin connector, and was very suprised with how stable the system was, how cool the supply stayed, and how quiet it was as well. I stuck the Antec one into my old rig to see if the instability when I OCed it was because of power, and it sure was.

Both systems are now garbage after taking a bath in storm water

My Antec 430 is 24 pin and it's a year and a half old. The extra pins are in a slider and aren't connected by defalt. All you have to do is... ta da! slide it together with the other 20 pins.

I'm sure CM is a great PS but I've had mine for over a year and a half, run 6 fans, a 3000+, 6800 GT, 2 Hard Drives, 2 Optical Drives, a sound card, a firewire card, and TV Tuner and never had a hiccup... take it for what it's worth though.

Incidently, the store told me to plug the 20 pin power supply into the 24 pin motherboard. As did tech support.
