Requiem for a dream and clockwork orange were horrific.

Evil dead movies are teh scary!

--When I saw War of the Worlds as a child, I don't know why, but I thought it was real. It gave me nightmares for years about aliens attacking and taking over earth. I musta been 5 or 6 but it really had an impact on me. My parents also had the audio version on tape. Like the book, it was narratted in the past tense. As a kid, I was unable to realize that it was a work of fiction and accepted it as truth. Scared the fucking shit out of me I tell ya.

Hellraiser(s)--I got my first french kiss while watching the first one on a date, so I think the only horror I had was realizing I had no clue how to french kiss.

Night of the Living Dead, I watch this movie alone at night, in a dark house, and it still makes me want to keep sword and a loaded firearm nearby when I go to sleep. It is the only movie that makes me feel uneasy after watching it. Hell try watching it in the middle of the day on New Years Day, then driving on the empty roads.

Of course the best cheesy scary movie was Dawn of the Dead, best satire on american commercialism ever made.

I will say that the beginning of American History X, which is a drama was fucking terrifying.

It was no good if you didn't see it in the theater. My friends and I went one night, we had the entire theater to ourselves, and that movie scared every one of us.

When I bought it on tape and watched it during the day on a regular TV, I thought it was kinda dumb, too.

And you can't forget the Excorcist

And Jaws since I saw it when I was 3...

I remember watching Jaws as a child and being too scared to swim in our lake, because I just knew there was a great white in the damn water.

Friday the 13th, the original one, was pretty scary too. I remember for years I would always check under my bed before going to sleep, because that scene where Kevin Bacon is poked from under the bed.

The Shining, that movie was too scary for me as a little girl, in fact I think I would freak out anytime I walked into the bathroom for fear of that witchhag thing in the bathtub.

Watching all these flicks now are enjoyable, and I think most of the older horror movies are where the real thrills once were, I rarely get scared by the newer movies, probably due to the desensitization to all of it.

OMFG Hell yes. No movie, in my entire life, has ever scared me more than this one. I had Oompa-Loompa nightmares for years. How anyone saw that fit for children is beyond my comprehension.

The first time I watched it was on my computer before it came out in the theaters.. the picture was more grainy and less sharp than it was on the big screen, and seriously freaked my wife and I out. We also were under the premise that it was real. Seeing it in the theater while still slightly grasping the thought it was real wasn't quite as freaky, but still made for a good movie - the first time you see it. I can't watch it now without getting bored.

And I so seriously want to see The Ring. I've heard nothing but good things about that movie. Mothman was good too.

First time I saw The Shining. The twins, oy ve. That still gets me King's fucked up mind + Kubrick's whole duality thing really meshed well there.

Event Horizon - I thought I was the only one who liked it, that was a nice mix of genre films that truly got me.

Poltergeist - Best scare ever for a PG flick (of course, PG-13 did not exist then and there were no tits for an R rating)

I am in the middle of watching Mothman Prophecies and it is pretty fucked as well

Blair witch just made me queezy due to the handheld camera.

I absolutely HATE horror movies, pretty much I usually end up wandering away, cause of

a) Anticipation of what's coming up next
b) I can't watch the damn things

None of the new horror movies that have come out recently have really scared me though, Friday the 13th movies did, and for the most part, now at least, I avoid watching horror movies, they don't interest me.

My vote for scariest movie has to be 'IT', ya know, the one with the clown... It scared the shit out of me when I was younger and Ive had a phobia of clowns ever since..

Event Horizon is a really good sci-fi horror flic, I dig it.

That scene in Requiem for a Dream where the guy (forgot his name) with the heroin problem shoots up in his arm where it's ... rotting, is fucking sick. I couldn't look at that. I must admit though, I do have a slight aversion to needles.

Two things I can't watch that might qualify for this thread..

1. MTV's show they did on plastic surgery. I mean dayum. The doctor had his entire fist under the skin of this girls boob and was moving all around. *shiver* Then the part where he's sticking some metal rod up into her nose and hammering on it to break off a piece of it to change the shape. I mean GAAH!

2. Van Wilder where the guys are eating the doughnuts. I just couldn't watch that.

Damn Aranuil....I was gonna say the American History X before I even saw you posted it. Without a doubt it was the most disturbing thing I ever saw on the screen. After seeing him "curb" the guy in the first part of the movie I could not get it out of my head. Couldn't even get the unit to respond later that night for fun with the girlfriend.

there really is a difference between scary & disturbing. Scariness is based on a kind of fear or terror. It seems to kick in some instinctual thing. To be disturb utilizes the intellect a little more. It's usually something that appalls your sense of what is right and wrong. Its also usually more realistic and has a longer effect on the mind.

I think the scariest movie for me would be Jaws since I'm morbidly afraid of sharks. The most disturbing? Have to think about that one for awhile. American History X was definitely up there, though.

The dead baby sceen in Trainspotting is #1 for me. That was a momment in cinematic history I will never forget.

Devils Advocate scared the bejesus out of me. There's something about a baby holding its mothers ovaries that deeply disturbs me.

Im surprised no one has mentioned The Hitcher. That was one of the most disturbing movies ive ever seen. Though i dont tend to watch horror movies in general. The Hitcher leaves most of the really creepy stuff up to your imagination which i thought was far more disturbing then actually filming the scenes in graphic detail.

Hmmm..disturbing? Prolly not many will agree, but I think Vanilla Sky was one of the most disturbing flicks I've seen in a while. Society is another, if you can ever find it.

As for scary movies, I forgot The Others.... I had no idea Nicole Kidman could really act! Eerie movie, very well done.

Another scene that disturbed the shit out of me was in Resevoir dogs when Michael Madsen was going to cut the police officers ear off.

When I watched American History: X, my GF at the time walked out during the Grocery Store scene to go to sleep, saying it was a sick movie that should never have been made. For those who get the opportunity, there's a very positive message in that movie.

I'll bite... never seen American History X, but you got my interest piqued now.. what exactly is this scene about?

The entire scene is about modern day racism/hate groups.

It's probably one of the best movies made. It stars Edward Norton, and honestly you'll barely recognize him. The opening scene is extremely graphic and brutal and it involves his house being broken into and him doling out some brutal and sadistic vigilante style justice. I'd go so far as to say if it doesn't turn your stomach, there's something wrong with you.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as it's been a while since I saw that movie.

I saw Event Horizon in the theatres, I dont remember how old I was but I know me and my best friend Mark had to sneak in to see it. Oh man, that movie fucked with us so bad, lol, every time we had a sleep over after that, at some point in the middle of the night one of us would whisper "Billyyyyyy" So much fun!

The two most disturbing movies I have ever seen are easily films about The Marquis.

Marat / Sade - very artsy, but if you can get into it and actually understand what is going on, its sick how Sade twists the mentally ill to make his point.

Salo: The 120 days of Sodom - Watch it, dont turn it off. Incredible film, Passolini's last and, imo, greatest accomplishment. Extremely hard to find, I had to resort to buying it on Laserdisc =p hehe

Most Disturbing : Very Bad Things

Scariest : Event Horizon

I am a manager at a movie theater. Screened Event horizon the night before it came out in theaters. I was by myself in the theater, about halfway through and the janitor came in. the dead wife says " I have something to show you" and then opens her eyes.. scared the shit out of me then 10 seconds later i hear a door open at the back of the theater. almost pissed myself!

I saw Aliens when I was 5. I was scarred for a good 5 years.

Faces of Death messed me up pretty good.

I also was tricked into watching a clip of a Russian soldier getting his throat cut by the Afghanistan army guys,...made me vomit and stuck in my mind for a month.

I was raised on horror flick violence, but it just doesn't compare when you know it's real.

Real clips are something that I am really not keen on seeing .....

My father got a Videorecorder when I was 11 - in 1980 and I was going to Gymnasium - I think that compares to High school, right ? - to another town so I had the chance to walk into one of those early Video-shops ( no age limitation at that time) and rent as my first adult horror movie ALIEN 1 ...went home watched it alone and nearly shit hard in my pants ..especially at the end ..when she was grabbing the cat in all the fog ..wow ...headache I had.

Next day I grabbed the Exorcist ! (11 years old) - that hit me even harder .....so those movies belong to the scariest I have ever seen...

Disturbing: A Clockwork Orange. The opening scene was chilling in its way and that was just the beginning. As far as frightening I dont find many traditional horror scarey, but one movie scared the shit out of me as a kid . Gargoyles, was made in 1972 and was AWFUL but the slow motion shots of the gargoyles attacking a hotel and the final scene were a gargoyle leader that had wings and was made to remind you of the devil, gave a "we will rule one day " speech and flew off into the night carrying a female gave me nightmares for years. Very B and if you enjoy them , a great movie. Honorable mention for Rosemary's Baby, very creepy.
