Domains/webspace

Time for an admission. I'm looking at setting up an online portfolio and I've never gone through having to buy webspace, a domain, etc. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I'd have to look for when it comes to setting up a webpage. I don't mean the HTML stuff or anything, just what I can expect for pricing, good companies to use. Canadian preferred. What I'm looking at needing is several hundred megs of space to host my animations, probably only like a gig transfer rate/month or so (being optimistic). Again, not looking for advice on making a webpage itself, just how to go about getting the space for it.

Thanks!

I've found Surpass Hosting to be really good. 4.94/mo for 2 gigs of space and 30gb/mo of bandwidth. Cheaper if you buy it for a year.

I've been hosting all my sites through Surpass as well ... downtime is very rare, and you really can't beat the price for what you're getting.

I concur with both Rellix and Faerin. Surpass is great.

Powweb is good

http://www.powweb.com/PowWeb/OnePlan/Detail

For $7.77/month you get 5GB of space and 10GB/day transfer at high speeds.

They support everything under the sun:

PHP4 & PHP5 w/Zend Optimizer, Perl5, Sendmail
CGI-BIN, SSI, .htaccess, Cronjobs
Flash, Shockwave, Midi, Multimedia Support
MySQL Database

So you can display your stuff in style.

If you pay for at least three months to start with, there's no setup fee. I paid for a year and got an extra 6 months free. I don't think that deal exists anymore. Might only be two extra months now.

That Surpass $4.xx account only allows 2GB and 30 GB/month which isn't much if you ever offer something up that's largish in size.

I used up 10GB in a day easy with the 139mb Family Guy Movie and that was just from people on this board that read the movie forum..

I use powweb for my webspace as well. Used them back in my Acolytes of Annihilation days too when I was the webmaster.
