Server Split question
Posted: December 2, 2002, 2:18 pm
by Fynris
Would this be a good idea...??
I know this has happened at least once for Veeshan.... but I also know that there have been others that have split twice. With the number of high level guilds all competeing for the high end mobs... would a server split be a viable option? Or is there not enough EQ future left to justify such a split?

I doubt we will ever see any more server splits.

I could see them possibly opening up /movelog for the new european servers. Perhaps they'll add a Japanese server as well.

With EQ2 and SWG coming out soon i doubt Verant will split the servers again.
Look at what has happened....
CS gone down hill for EQ
GMs are hardly ever on
PoP comes out and it took people less then a week or so to get to 65.
By the time EQ2 and SWG come out we will all be 65 and maybe have 3 or 4 alts at 65 with all AA points. Get board of EQ and go look for something else to play.
Looks like VI wants EQ to die.

Not only is EQ dying but it's Sony who wants it to die! Which makes sense since they are probably making too much money and feel guilty about people killing themselves because of EQ.

EQ has too many addicts to die. Start over as a noob in a new game? They'd quite after the first week and come back home to where they have power and the respect of dozens of other EQ addicts.

EQ2 will be the death of EQ, it should be fucking obvious. Im almost positive that Sony will all but abandon EQ1. Though one question remains. If you kill all the gods in EQ1 who is there to kill in EQ2?

I think EQ2 takes place prior to the events that lead up to Everquest.. a prequel of sorts. (I think.)

No, Zoo... EQ2 is the sequel, EQOA is the prequel

Keep the Swedes! They are the missing link between humans and Newfs.

If VI and Sony are smart, they will ride the EQ horse for as long as they can. They have been smart and delayed EQ2 several times. I think we have seen a lot of what they wanted to put into the original EQ2 come into EQ as expansions and other test material.
There is plenty of history to suggest that sequels simply do not have as much draw as originals. While nice and flashy, they can't recapture what the original game had.
The other thing from Sony's perspective is what is out there to take players away from EQ? Nada. Others have tried, but people generally come back to EQ. The only thing Sony would hurt is themselves. Maybe they will figure out that it is a gaming community. Most people continue to play the game because their friends do. If a lot of the friends left or decided to try to start something else, EQ would take a major nose dive in subscribership. It is a delicate balance and they have to be careful.
The only other option is to delay EQ2 while perhaps getting Star Wars out, but part of that could also be determined with their agreements with Lucas. They don't want to go too long on that or they risk pissing off George.
I have a feeling that until there is a very viable threat on the horizon that EQ2 will continue to be delayed for a variety of reasons.
As far as server splits and moves go, that would be playing roulette. Everyone would like everyone else to move, but I don't think very many would move except maybe Vahall. There are too many people that have made friends inside and outside their guilds and any guild attempting to move would probably take losses as people would have to decide between friends and their guild.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to do some sort of server balancing. Open up move logs for brief periods of time from one of the larger servers, to one of the smaller servers. Only give people the option of going to a single lower populated server as opposed to any lower populated server.
This way they can still make money off of server move requests, but at the same time balance out the population of the servers, and they wouldn't have to bring any new servers online via a true server split. Would this work? I don't know. I know there would be many problems with this idea, such as server economy and balance of power, but it does have its upside in my opinion.

Correct Aslanna and sort of correct Adex.
