So as not to (further) derail the Katrina thread, has anyone seen the discovery channel show talking about what'll happen when (not if) even a medium size hurricane hits NYC? It's happened before and will again. A 10+ foot storm surge and it's over, power, transporation, communications, etc.. are underground and will be flooded. The equipmwnt to pump them out is down there too. Once debris breaches a window on a skyscaper many more will immediately blow out. There's no possible way to evacuate for most, even those that have the means to leave there isn't any infrastructure to let the vast majority out.

The city govt has essentially ignored it, because there's really nothing they can afford to do about it.

A 10 foot storm surge would mean people in lower manhattan might get thier toes wet.

But fear mongering is a good thing... there is no other city in the country that is at risk the way new orleans if to flooding. Wanna talk disaster scenerios for nyc... talk about that fault line runnin up the hudson river and no earthquake codes

How many of those so called earthquakes none of which I can find with a magnitude over 2.0, hell for all we know that was the central park Garth Brooks concert" caused damage?

What about the thing I saw on National Geographic about a small island (somewhere in the canaries I think)that has a big piece that is going to fall off and create a Mega Tsunami. I can't remember the details as it's been a while, but they were saying when the wave hit New York it would still be like .. I wanna say three or four hundred feet high and be traveling at like 4oo mph.. Farfetched, Maybe.. But think of what that would do.

I am just trying to imagine what a MEGA tsunami could do.. I just remember when I was in Alaska in 2001. The drive from Anchorage to Wasilla was crazy. Seeing everything on the sides of the highway dead for as far as you can see to either side for miles upon miles.. And there wasn't even anything mega about that tsunami.. I realize the one last year had a much higher count of victims.. but I can only really gauge by what I have seen with my own eyes.

I know! Was watching the special on TV awhile back. When this thing blows, it is supposed to everyone within a 300 mile radius ( If i can remember correctly ) instantly and thousands more within a day. The total death toll would be 50,000 plus ( or another large number, its been awhile since ive seen it! )

major hurricanes rarely hit farther north than the carolinas. Has a category 4 ever hit farther north than Wilmington, NC?

Hugo was a 4 that hit Charleston. I think Hazel back in the 50s that hit North Carolina was 4.

the seawater temps and the weather patterns that tend to move across the continent, just aren't conducive.
