WinFS Beta 1

WinFS was released and it works with Windows XP. (MSDN release, can find it on the newsgroups easy enough with a "WinFS" search) Need NetFrame 2.0 b2 installed on your computer.

I installed it, have no clue what to do with it...I'm guessing nothing atm. Some developers might get excited over it. Here's a link to a WinFS developer Team video introducing the WInFS beta and showing some examples of what it does:

It's kind of funny watching the WinFS team try to explain why WinFS is so cool and revolutionary. I'm sure it is to relational database peeps but the interviewer/camera guy is trying to get them to put it into terms non developer/programmers can understand.

Copernic > WinFS

Until a good search app is developed using WinFS!

I only watched half of it but it looks interesting. You can't really do 'Copernic > WinFS' though since one is a search application and the other is an actual file system.

I liked that 'life journal' or whatever the first application (with the colored bars) was. Too bad that's not included with the beta.

I'm guessing the biggest advantage of WinFS is that it requires software makers to buy a MS SDK to implement applications and abide by a license that effectively locks them into MS's platform. And requires (probably illegal) reverse engineering for anyone else to implement compatible applications.

Journaling filesystems are nothing new or revolutionary. The non-MS world has had them for years. Very cool from a nerdy aspect, but if this is news for them it's pretty sad.
Look! We recreated something others have had for 10 years. And made it bloated and costly!!!
Maybe they'll invent fire next. Or perhaps toilet paper.

Yeah, but I try to take every opportunity to mention Copernic even if it doesn't apply. It's such a time saver.

WinFS looks promising.

Nobody ever accused MS of being that innovative most of the time. I don't see them claiming to have invented the idea. That doesn't mean people not running those other OSs can't benefit from something like that being incorporated into Windows.
