I have noticed a problem with DNS lookups on my XP Pro machines, was a bit annoying getting failed lookups due to transient DNS issues, then the site would continue to fail to resolve after the DNS issue went away. That is when I would get host not found once, I would continue to get host not found.

Thought about it a bit and realized XP has NT & 2K's DNS Caching functionality (/joy).

I have added the following strings and values to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]

NegativeCacheTime = 0
NetFailureCacheTime = 0
NegativeSOACacheTime = 0
MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit = 1

Seems to have resolved the repeated failed lookup (when you bloody know its there) issue...Might try it if this grates on your nerves as much as it was mine...:)

If you totally didn't understand what I just said...Then you prolly shouldn't try it...:)

Is that the joyous bug that when your primary DNS fails it reverts to secondary, and it never tries the primary again?
