Dang. Some guy says he went into photoshop and eyedropped them and they were the same. Damn our mere human eyes. Amazing what the surrounding colours can do to change perception.

No need to snopes it...
You can verify it yourself in 5 seconds with mspaint.
Just eyedrop 1 square and scribble on the other.

To double check I pulled up the image in paint and copied a portion of each square and pasted them next to each other, its the same shade.

Aye I did the same, it's actually the same colour.
As Dregor said, it will be something to do with the surrounding colours, still, pretty fucking cool.

great illusion, seen it before... if ya polygonal lasso the A square, and then slide it back and forth to the B square, it appears to darken/lighten as you're moving it...

Did it .. still mystified.
I wonder if I painted my penis gray ... would it seem larger or just look like a chessboard?

There are some flash animations of some simpler illusions (I believe by the same guy) with explanations here
http://web.mit.edu/persci/gaz/gaz-teaching/index.html. Fun stuff.

Paint it silver and it'll look just like a needle!

Unless you were told to examine this I really wouldn't know to care that they are the same shade. Interesting I guess.

Wow, I just flashed back 24 years to Design 1 class ...
BTW Dregor: Christopher Walken is saying "You've just been pranked", not "You got pranked"

I was just looking at that yesterday and didn't think it seemed to match up.
