Commentary on this please. I'd like to get one and I'd like some thoughts on any performance issues, pros and cons vs the two, and any differences in games. Neither my husband or I enjoy playing sport-like games either, but this is something I thought he might like for Christmas. Help please!

Isn't Square going back to Nintendo after FFXI?

After FF XI, Squaresoft will be co-releasing on PS 2 and Gamecube. Honestly good reason to get a game cube & PS2 (which just extends my point of why X-Box sucks). Part of the reason why Squaresoft wants to co-release on Game Cube is that the interface with the cube and the gameboy advance (For examples see the interaction of Sonic for the cub). Also Suqaresoft is going to be releasing all the classic on GBA as well (FFVI, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger).

The basic problem with this decision is that it boils down to:
Sony or Microsoft.
Microsoft is just well, Microsoft. And Sony, as we've all experienced from EverQuest is well, Sony.

Well PS2 has GTA Vice City, which is basically the coolest console game yet, so right now I'd say PS2 for sure over XBox. However, all of the new systems have some exclusive games that make each system a good potential buy. I'm somewhat partial to Nintendo myself since I'm really into 4 player games and you can't do much better than Smash Bros Melee in that department.

If you're a fan of the cookie-cutter japan rpg, go ps2. Otherwise, you're better off with an Xbox. I have both and if it was not for devil may cry and gta3, I would have ditched it a long time ago. And like others have said already, Xbox Live is pretty sharp.

I personally just got me a PS2 like 2 weeks ago because my computer decided to fry my power supply.
And so far i bought 3 games, The Two Towers, Tony Hawk Proskater 4 and Shinobi.
The PS2 has been around for longer then the other console if my memory is correct. It has more games then any other consoles simply for the fact that you can play playstation 1 and 2 games on it.
So far i have been very happy with my PS2 and the games really look awesome.
I would say that it all boils down to user preference.
(in other words; it's relative to what games you like, what controller you like (game pad), user interactivity, DVD etc...)
I was used to the gamepad on the PSX so going to PS2 was easy. I personally don't like how controllers are for the other games and i hate getting used to them.
The xbox is basically a console created with high end computer parts. i.e. the hardrive, the dvd, the video card and just the sheer bulk size of the thing is enough to scare me away + the controllers don't appeal to me. (thats just my opinion though)
Ohh and sega are creating games for PS2 Now and Shinobi is sooooo fucking worth it
thats about it . hope it helped a bit.

Xbox has better graphics and stuff like a hard drive and a built in modem so you can give MS more money to play online with xbox live.
PS2 has what has been scientifically determined the be 1.17 trillion times better games, and more diverse titles which leads to a wider selection. A much larger installed base means that OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of game companies are more willing to put out risky and artistic titles over Xbox, where you pretty much only get cookie cutter first person shooters, liscensed games like Buffy, and racing games that are guaranteed sales.
I own a PS2 and it gets a lot of use in my house, both from me and from when my friends come over. The Xbox isn't a bad choice to make, but it will never have the library of titles that PS2 has, and you will never get the really good niche games like ICO or Kessen.

I prefer my ps2 any day. Larger game library, backwards suport. Then when the ps3 comes omg /drool. Lateral suport just sounds sexy.
I might buy a gamecube too some day. Just because nintendo will NEVER go away.

I have a PS2, and I would agree with the others that from the Xbox games I have played the only thing Xbox has on the PS2 is graphical power, havnt tested out the new PS2 modem yet planning on picking one up soon.
Halo, and the Couple Mechwarrior games for the XBox are the only reasons I see to play on Xbox, anything else you can get from PS2.
Sony is working on the Playstation 3 atm, which will have preplay, so you can play PS2 and PS1 games on it which is always nice
Only thing right now that could sway me to get an Xbox right now is if Microsoft acted on their software liscense to release a Shadowrun title.

The XBox is a better system on paper, and with a company like Microsoft behind it I think it will come out on top. There are tons of good games coming out, and the addition of a hard drive to store MP3s on as well as save game data (no need to buy those $30 controller memory chips) is a nice addition. The DVD player on the XBox is much nicer as well, if you get the kit you need to play them. (~ $30)
I have both an XBox and a Gamecube, both are great systems. My friend (Truant) had a PS2 and honestly I never really enjoyed it that much. Final Fantasy was neat, but I never got to play it really. (Too much EQ!)
If I were to make a decision at this point between the two you posted, I think I would go with the XBox. You might invest in the smaller version of the controller though, the one it comes with is pretty large and if you don't have big hands its bulky.

They are now packaging the X-box with Controller (S) the small one, because market demand showed that no one wanted the big ass controller. X-box live is fun, PS2 is cookie cutter in my opinion--when you seperate the trash, there is just as many good titles on X-box (maybe more) than there are on PS2.

Ive had both and the Xbox really is OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS more powerful but Ive had more fun with my PS2. There are way more games for the PS2 and way better games for it too. Id get him the PS2 and then buy him Devil May Cry and GTA3 with it. You cant go wrong ^^

For those of you who love spending money, there is a game coming out for the x box, batallion I believe its called, and it costs more than the system. It has two joysticks, 3 pedals, and a control panel, so you can drive your tank in your house. Fun fun.

It's called Steel Batallion, it's a Mech-War simulator. Supposed to be pretty badass but costs $200 cause of the countroller.

X-Box.
My choice really came down to online capability. X-Box has a hard drive and modem while PS2 does not(need to purchase them separately). In the long run it looks like you will get more mileage from your X-Box if you like versatility and online play(X-Box Live). Have you seen the X-Box Live communication headset? Pretty cool. Live chat while playing. No more keyboard...
Generally as far as games go it seems like more PC-like titles are on X-Box but overall Id have to agree that PS2 has better games atm. I owned both at one time but eventually I sold my PS2(I couldnt afford to support both). I went with potential and X-Box has more of it in the long run.
Good games on X-Box:
Halo(omg!Halo2!)
Buffy(yes I like this game heh)
Morrowind(I was dissapointed in the long run but still not a bad game)

I love my PS2, but to be honest, haven't tried the X-Box. However, I must say, after being a fan of PS for a long ass time, I love that freakin console. My old PS had a mod chip in it, but it got ganked out of my storage facility, along with my shitload of burned games. However, even though I know some of the PS/PS2 games are coming out for X-Box or whatever...
Still can't beat the greatest game ever made:
Metal Gear Solid (all of them!!) Hellafucking cool game, so much fun. This is a Stealth series, lots of espionage and killing with a cool storyline. It's oh so fun to sneak up to a guard and hear him choking to death! RAWR!
Don't forget:
Syphon Filter (another shooting/stealth type combat game, big storyline involved)
Silent Hill (similar to syphon filter, but not as fun of a storyline)
Super Puzzle Fighter!! I love this freakin game (it's like Tetris game with funny characters from Street Fighter)
the Tekken Series (Combat/Fighting - I can whoop all your asses in this game, mind you)
Driver (racing)
any of the Gran Turismo games (read above)
any of the Madden Series (I know you don't want sports, but this is a great football game to play)
and for some great fun, Spyro!
mind you, there are a lot more titles I absolutely love. Football and hockey games are my fav sports one, as well as Tony Hawk games. But you gotta love Metal Gear!

I have an Xbox and I must say it owns, Halo is just ione of the greatest shooters ever made, that game alone is reason enough to buy the console. Other than that i really like the graphics on it, having played on both PS2 and Xbox, i would say Xbox comes out a little ahead in the comparison.
I own both...

I own both and use both for different reasons.
The pros to the X-Box are you get a 4 player multi tap built in, breakaway controller cables (just in case someone trips), built in modem for X-Box live, and a semi-decent selection of games, harddrive so you don't have to have a memory card unless you want to take your games to a friends house.
The pros for PS2 are built in DVD player, selection of games is huge (ranging from educational to obscene), Squaresoft produces games for the system.
Cons are pretty much the X-Box if you want it as a DVD player you have to buy the DVD play back kit, not many titles out atm that dont' revolve around racing or sports that is worth playing, the system has to be in a well ventilated area and Microsoft does most of their games.
Cons for the PS2 are if you want 2+ people on the system you have to buy a multi-tap and you have to have a memory card.
I probally forgot some things but that's a basic run down of it all.

P.S. Can you tell I work at Gamestop? LOL

A couple of people have talked about the technology that goes into the Xbox... heres a couple more tidbits on it.
There is an upgrade kit for 720p graphic output (HDTV) much higher resolution than any of the other game systems out there.
Full Dolby Digital rendering on the fly... try playing Halo on a nice Home Theater setup... its absolutely intense.
The audio and video technology that went into the xbox are simply incredible... PS or Game Cube cant touch it.
course, I dont own either... I just play EQ

by Kluden
The obvious answer is....
....buy all three. That way, when a game comes out you want to play, you'll guarantee yourself the system to play it on.
Of course, if you had to choose one, each system really does rely on certain types of game genres more than others...so it all boils down to the games you play most.

The reason I bought my ps2 over an x-box is because it has a much better game selection, especially with fighting games/rpg's (the only reason I own a console, the rest I can play on my computer). The ps2 has outsold the x-box by quite a wide margin and developers do look at that when selecting a platform to sell their games on. The x-box does have better hardware though, I guess the better system doesn't always win the proverbial "console wars".
On the off chance your husband is an electronics nut though, I should add that x-boxes can be kind of neat if you mod them. My buddy and I took his apart hacked the fuck out of it, we did everything from throw in a new 160 gig HD to turn his bootup logo blue. We threw in a new menu also which allows you to save games from the dvd onto the HD, so every game he rents he owns. You can chip the ps2 and d/l burn your own games too, but nothing near as convenient. I might have gone the x-box route myself, but if I want free games I'll put the controller down and walk 3 feet over to my pc and play one of the 6 million I have waiting for me here. Of course, now that I have a usb/dualshock2 adapter I can play rpg's and all the shit I bought a ps2 for on my pc displayed on a 29 inch tv I've got hooked up to my gf4........ I'm not helping am I.
Basically what I'm trying to say is if you are just going to take the thing out of the box, plug it in and play it, go ps2. If you are interested in modifying your console, go x-box.

No matter what numbers people throw at you a console choice is down to one thing:
The games you like to play.
Which console has more of the games you like to play?
PS2 has by far the biggest selection. Gamecube has the smallest but the simple fact is that Nintendo make the best games bar none. Xbox has two good titles to my knowledge (that arent available elsewhere at least) - Halo and Splinter Cell.
And that's why the XBox is the only modern console including hand helds that I _don't_ own.
Xbox

Halo is undoubtedly outstanding but isn't worth the cash outlay for a console and 4 controllers if no other games are worth buying for it (until Splinter Cell came out last week anyway).

I remain to be convinced that this latest foray into console-online activity is going to be any more succesful than any of the previous tries.
Coolest thing about that mech game is the controller
Developers are now slowly starting to drop Xbox versions of their games too. New Dreamcast? Maybe. . .
Posted: November 27, 2002, 12:30 pm
by Xouqoa
You're thinking of Steel Battalion, that's the $200 one with the oober controller. It's more of a simulator, where as Mech Assault is more of an arcade game.
Anyway, I don't think XBox will go the way of the Dreamcast. Dreamcast was released a year before the PS2, with inferior hardware that was far outclassed by the PS2 when it came out. Besides, Sega was never known for their consoles... they are one of the best game developers though. More developers will jump on board with the XBox once they see it is here to stay.

Mech Assault kind of lacks because everything is bloody well heat seeking, so it takes all the skill out of the game when you play multi. it's fun for about an hour then that shit gets old fast.
Xbox is by far the better system when it comes to specs - and for all you fucktards saying it has a modem it's not a goddamn modem, it's a NIC (10/100 to boot!)!
Xbox is starting to come out with the 2nd gen games - Splinter Cell, MGS2, Tony 4. All of which simply rock. Doubt you'll see Splinter Cell come out on the PS2, and if you do it'll pale in comparison to the Xbox version.
Xbox Live is fun (though you can't curse at people over the mic because they have people listening in and can catch you for it), however they really need a wider variety of titles, the ones out right now are ok, though for sports fan you're in your glory with the 2K3 series. Ghost Recon Multi sucks simply because there's major bugs in the optimatch for it causing it not to show a lot of the games that are being hosted, plus everyone plays with 20+ respawns on a team deathmatch, which takes the team work out of it. (I've yet to try Unreal though).
The on the fly ac3 encoder simply puts anything else to shame in the sound department. I wish they'd come out with shit like that for the PC, then I might move it into my living room, heh. Also the support for 480p, 720p and 1080i pwnz. It's really like night and day when playing a game in progessive over just a standard mode.
But like everyone has said - in the end it boils down to the titles you want. I am thinking of getting a PS2 simply because of GTA3 and Vice City, and a GC because of Metroid Prime (mind you if it's FPS like it's showing in the commercials I wouldn't be interested in it). Those that say 'Xbox has so few titles', give it a break because it's only been out for a year now, and in its first year it's done quite well.

I bought Xbox when it came out, Halo was fantastic, but, the games are all kinda the same, theres nothing revolutionary in terms of gameplay.
Take the gamecube, which I picked up after I played out 7 xbox titles... The games on gamecube simply break the mold and make you learn something completely new. Metroid prime is a prime example
I'm selling my Xbox, 4 controllers, multiple cables (rca, svideo, fiber), 7 games (halo/projectgotham/obiwan/jedistarfighter/amped/oddworld/spyhunter), all in an xbox carrying case. $300+s/h.

There certainly are PS2 modchips around that will allow you to play pirated PS1 discs as well as fixing DVD output, disabling macrovision, allowing all-region games to play, the usual.
How easy they are to find now MS+Sony ganged up on Lik-Sang I don't know.

PS2. I just got the modem and am currently beta testing EQOA. The modem is very cool except for trying to type, and I believe it will be huge, seeing how it was sold out at almost everywhere I looked. IMO PS2 will be the winner of all three, it just has too many games.
