Tori Amos is going to release 6 official "bootlegs" recordings from her tour this year. You can get them (or listen to snippets) at
http://www.toribootlegs.com/.
I always wondered why artists don't do something like this more often. Obviously there is at least some market for it since people (myself included from time to time) pay higher than normal prices for "import" (ie bootleg) records of shows, often not of the best quality. Although being able to sell it through the internet helps a lot I imagine since you don't have to try to push an item that might not sell a lot of copies out to a bunch of stores.
A company that is trying to do something similar is
http://www.instantlive.com/ They apparently sell copies of the concert right after the show. They certainly would have gotten a fair amount of money from me if something similar had been at a lot of shows I have been to in the past. They also sell some of the CDs through the web site, although their selection of artists at the moment is fairly small.
Hopefully something that will become more prevalent.

I don't know why they dub them bootlegs if they are 'official'. They're pretty much just 'Live' albums at that point!
Pearl Jam did something similar in 2000...
After the release of Binaural, and the resulting tour of Europe and North America, the band were the first to release high quality live recordings of each concert on the tour. This was to combat the proliferation of low-quality bootleg recordings made by zealous fans. All totalled, they released 72 albums, most with two CDs, and set a record for most albums to debut in the Billboard top 200. A further 72 albums were released from the 2003 tour, although most of these were only available for online purchase, or via download.
To me it's a good idea. If I went to the show I'd like to have a copy of it. I think for some reason bands/labels think that if someone gets a copy of a show they'll just listen to that and stop going to concerts. Which is dumb because people would still go to concerts.

There's nothing innovative or new about this, unless we're talking about the mainstream music genre. The Grateful Dead have been releasing Live, Soundboard quality, recordings of epic shows for many years (Dick's Picks). Tapers have made these shows available to people for decades for *gasp* free! Sorry for the diatribe.
I agree. These are most certainly NOT bootlegs. A bootleg is someone sneaking in a recording device, and taping the show illegally. These are soundboard records. Most show I attend, tapers are permitted and I try and get copies of the show for posterity. It's always interesting to listen to a show a second or third time.
I recently saw the Peter Gabriel concert on a local PBS station. Awesome stuff! I hope he brings the tour to the US next year.

Yep.. nothing new about it. It's really just a simple marketing ploy. OMG Bootleg I MUST HAVE IT because it sounds illegal!
Incubus also did it in 2003/2004.

You actually think your cliché comments are amusing?
Yes, people listen to them, and I would be admitting that regardless of how much I personally like them. They wouldn't be popular if it wasn't for their fan base. Also, considering how much of their profits go to charities, I in fact do have some respect for them. You however...

I was semi serious.
I heard one of their songs and figured they were just a 1 hit wonder type of band.... kinda like Hoobastank.

Interesting you think that, considering their continued success over the airways with their latest 3 albums. So no - they are definitely not a one hit wonder band. Furthermore, I wouldn't classify Hoobastank as one hit wonder either. They had two huge hits off their first album, and another off their latest.
While I may not be a big fan, at least I'm not ignorant of their success.

Anyway, I don't think his point was really that people do (or don't) listen to Incubus. Just that they were another example of someone releasing official "bootlegs".

Exactly. I will also add:
Billboard.com wrote:All proceeds from the project will benefit the Make Yourself Foundation, Incubus' newly launched charitable organization.

Never ever compare Hoobastank to Incubus again, fucking rip off merchants.
Saw Incubus last year in Dublin, one of the best gigs Ive ever been to, they are a fucking amazing band.

Get the Growing Up DVD (which was probably what was on PBS). Think it's like $15. Good show for the money!
There's also an 'official bootleg' (I think) titled Still Growing Up 2004 floating around.

I also don’t understand how this is a revolutionary concept when more then half of my music library is live music. The last 2 shows I went to they allowed my friend to bring an obnoxiously high micstand…the shows both came out with studio quality sound (except once when it was hit by a few glowsticks)
as far as im concerned live music recordings sound better then studio 90% of the time
